Except...this one has more balls and was actually a good movie.
The story is based on something old (a poem?) which I have never heard of (I am so uncultured) but the main gist of the story is that we have our hero Beowolf (I think 300 was an inspiration for his own announcements) who is fearless, he kills the monster Grendell (made by an affair between the king and some underworld creature, played by Angelina Jolie), becomes king, fights his offspring and lives to tell the tale (or does he?).
My first impression was : "Hey, this looks like Shrek". Then I noticed Grendell and the whole Shrek idea watered away when he was breaking people and actually looked pretty gruesome. Well done Motion Capturing guys!
Now Beowolf is a guy with steel balls (we do not see them, even when he fights naked for some reason) who takes no nonsense from anything or anyone so just for that part it was enjoyable. I wonder why they made this in the Polar Express style, it seems tedious to overdo everything in a CGI layer when all they had to do is just create the 'fantasy' elements in between reality but is does however, create a distinct style and feel which works 90% of the time.
You can see a lot of time and effort went into creating each frame and sometimes it looks better than real life (odd I know). But it is definitely not a kiddies movie!
8/10
Good
Kickass action bitties
Grendell is gruesome
Angelina is nekkid (sort of)
Medieval style is always cool
Bad
Sometimes too shiny for its sake
Pumping song when movie begins and credits song DO NOT fit in
Motion Capture might scare some people
