For the uninformed,

join Richard Kelly (of the Donnie Darko fame) in his newest movie (much delayed, much critised before it got an eventual release) which sees us at a distant future (by all the delaying this distant future shares the same year as the one we're living in right now) where the future is basically falling apart. I am not really sure what else is going on in the movie but I know there is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson who plays a movie star, Justin Timberlake (Jt for his friends) plays a war veteran, Sarah Michelle Gellar a former (or current?) porn star etc etc

Now this movie got boo'ed at during its run in Cannes and then recut and bought up and dubbed over by Richard Kelly etc etc. Its called ambitious and misunderstood while others just call it plain fucked up and not a worthy follow up of Donnie Darko (seriously, how can that be someone's first 'big' movie).

Well I am gonna see what all the fuzz is about when the clock strikes 9:00 tomorrow night (or ten, I am not sure yet) and I will let all of you know what the verdict is.

I am intrigued though (plus point, Moby did the score!)

Well this a weird movie which has the book of Revelations as its guideline (and constantly quoted by our Narrator, Justin Timberlake).

The plot makes more sense to me now, Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) is an actor who goes missing and reappears shortly afterwards, Ronald (Sean William Scott) is an amnesiac cop who has to help his brother get out of the hands of the Neo-Marx movement, Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the pornstar (Krysta Now) who mingles with Santaros etc etc

Now Justin Timberlake plays Private Pilot Abilene, he got scarred because of friendly fire during the war (the world is now in full WW3 mode btw) and he narates the whole story which gives you some sort of coherent structure (still difficult to follow).

I am not gonna say more, the movie has its twists and deeper meanings which I did not see coming (I should've known though). Its ambitious, it falls flat but it picks itself up towards the end and goes to show that Richard Kelly is not just another actor, if anything, I feel like he loses focus a lot of times.

Never the less, like Donnie Darko this movie has to be seen again to grasp what is going on. I wanna track down the novels (the prequel of sorts) to get a better understanding and perhaps more appreciation (?).

As it stands, 7/10. Anyone else seen this and wanna get into it?

I watched it, then watched it again, and I hate myself for it.

other than having a stellar cast, its fucked up, half the shit doesn't make sense, even when it does, its still fucked up.

Justin Timberlake
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Dwayne (the rock) Johnson
Curtis Armstrong
Mandy Moore
Christopher Lambert
John Larroquette
Jon Lovitz
Sean William Scott

and so many more , but I still hated this movie and hated myself even more for watching it a second time to try and make sense of it, the only movie that I loved more the 2nd time round was vanilla skies.

Southland tales scores a very generous 4/10 from me

In my opinion, this movie would have made a lot more sense if they had shortened it to 15 minutes and cut out every scene that did not have SM gellar, sean william scott or Dwayne Johnson and it would have

a ) made some sense
b ) scored higher than 4/10

nothing else made sense.

( and the only reason it got 4 from me is cause SM Gellar plays a porn star and no one rides a cock like Krysta Now )
