I have no idea if this is true but i've seen this a few times so maybe it is... I'll be asking for my slips until i find out that taxi's dont get petrol subsidies. i know there are certain diesel rebates/subsidies of some sort for farmers ans other enterprises but not petrol...

ALWAYS ask for a cash slip when filling up your vehicle's tank , even if paying with cash and even if you intend on throwing the slip away, because....

· The pump attendants take these unclaimed cash slips from the cash register attendant and sell these same cash slips to taxi drivers

· The taxi drivers then add these cash slips to their own and so claim a bigger subsidy amount from government, thereby not feeling the pinch of the fuel increases.

Send this to everyone on your address list. to prevent this corruption going on and the rest of us (non-subsidized drivers) suffers in silence. You probably didn't even know that fuel for Taxi's is subsidized, which we pay for.

Thanks again to the South African government for scr*wing it's tax paying citizens while thieves and liars continue being subsidized.

Taxi drivers getting subsidies? I have never heard that one before. I'll see if I can get some clarification on it.
cyfermaster
I have have heard that they do. Can't remember where I heard it, but I do remember hearing something about it. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
Nitro Guy
It would seem that they dont get a subsidy from the government

he industry is not receiving any subsidy from government, hence this makes it difficult for us as the industry to operate

What the author of that original e-mail must have meant is that, they use the slips for income tax purposes.
i.e. they would keep the cash (tax free) and use the petrol slips to claim the expense.

But then again they could just keep the cash and not deposit it into their bank account which would be far easier and cost free.

So they claim VAT back on a company without a vat number or do they get paid back xx amount for every xx amount they spend?

Well guys, I am gonna collect my receipts so I also can make money. Thanks.
Paul
This is partly true, you can claim back alot of tax on petrol if you use your vehicle for transport, work, etc

OK this is my sort of field so i can help explain here. Petrol is ZERO RATED for VAT(i.e. the supply value x 0% for VAT) Hence you will see no VAT on a petrol slip.

What i refered to and Pauls subsequent post was the following.

SARS give you allowances for cost that you incur in the production of income. These are very limited in an individuals case and are subject to caps, etc in the majority of cases. If you're an office worker your travel from your home to your office is "deemed" private and therefore you cannot claim costs against your income.

So for example a Plumber would need to travel to the client in order to perform his task and hence earn income.
The costs necessarily incurred by him in earning that revenue would be tax deductable, petrol costs would be one of them.
The result is that he only pays tax on his profit portion.

Here the taxi dudes would simply add your petrol slip to there's and "increase" their costs, which lower profits and
therfore they have to pay less tax...

Meaning they dont really "claim" they just reduce their tax liability.

Isn't it just Diesel thats zero taxable? And Petrol just being your normal VAT?

Nope the petrol a consumer would buy at the garage has other Levies(taxes) costed into the prices you see at the pumps.(Kinda like sin tax on cigarettes and booze).

Jet Fuel is VATable, with diesel certain industries may claim diesel rebates(not VAT) when the applicable VAT Vendor submits his VAT201 return(there's a seperate little section for it).

Think about it, Diesel and Jet fuel are fuels which are used in commerce to produce goods by farmers or to provide a service to consumers.

LOL trust me a little i work with this stuff everyday, if you dont here's a linky about the basics of VAT if you're interested... Bear in mind the compulsory threshold to register increases to 1 000 000 from 2009

Zero rated goods include mostly food products such as brown bread, rice and maize, but also include resources like petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin. Zero rated services include international transport, payments made by and public authorities to welfare organisations and services supplied outside South Africa.

EDIT:

The purpose and impact of zero rating can be found here Zero rating

You can see here that VAT on a percentage basis affects the poor more than it would the rich since they spend all their disposable money on food, etc and the rich may use a greater percentage on purchasing exempt supplies, eg purchasing of investments , etc.
