Given the way the petrol price is going, this is becoming a much more attractive option to me for short distance trips. I've got my eye on a jonway scooter, but what other good makes are there? Preferably something less than 10K, a Vespa would be stunning but it wouldn't do much by way of saving money for me...
And if you have any good reasons why not to buy a scooter, let me hear them.

I heard of lots of people having problems with Jonway (i might be wrong). I would say go for the more established brands ot get yourself a small 125 bike, they are also very light on fuel. And it would be more usable as you can use it on the highway.

I have a mate that runs a scooter group thing called scooter 101. They do runs and all kinds of fun things. He works for bike SA as well, and he recommends only 2 brands of scooters. I believe Jonway is one of them, however I will check and confirm. I will only be able to confirm after 5 though. Sorry.

After 5 is fine. I'm famed for being impulsive but not so impulsive that I would be buying it today
Val, you make a good point with the bike, that's something else I will consider

I know one of the top guys at Jonway personally, and although he will deny it, if it was his son/mother/father he wouldn't tell them to buy a Jonway, lol.
I'm not sure of what else you could get instead, but seriously, stay away from Jonway.
I have no vested interest, I'm just being honest.
Good luck searching.

My roommate recently bought a Vespa. Very light on fuel but completely impractical for winter.
It is a quality piece of kit though, perhaps worth the investment if you're serious about it.

maybe he can't shag in them?
I'm also thinking of getting a scooter... but shit the traffic nowdays looks scary for a smallish scooter
russell

Yeah, traffic is an issue for anything on 2 wheels, particularly taxis, but if you're alert then it's not a major problem.
The vespa is damn appealing, but retailing at about 50k is a bit too much for me currently

thats the thing with scooters ... you can get killed if a car just slightly touches you i saw this girl on a scooter get bumped by a car ... she flew through the air like a ragdoll on fire and the car hardly touched her that and its piss cold out there in the winter ... but then again maybe global warming will solve that prob for us heh heh heh

If you can spend 50K, rather get a Kawasaki KLR, which is a dual purpose and very usable. Can also run in excess of 140km/h. VERY good value for money.
If you looking to spend less, look for some 2nd hand ones.

I'm going to have to lose some weight then before I buy a scooter. Damn, I hate dieting
As for looks, this is what I am still considering
Not going to have anyone perving over me, but they don't do that normally so hey. It retails at 8500, I should be able to hook a fair discount on that too.

Get yrself a decent little 125 bike, something like the Honda CBR125. Still pretty cheap and a lot more fun than a scooter
