In the "light" of starting a constructive discussion

I heard a discussion on the radio last night about how one broken energy saving light could polute a dam as big as the "hartebees poort dam"

This is what i found:
QUOTE
Energy-saving light bulbs are so dangerous that everyone must leave the room for at least 15 minutes if one falls to the floor and breaks, a Government department warned yesterday.

The startling alert came as health experts also warned that toxic mercury inside the bulbs can aggravate a range of problems including migraines and dizziness.

And a leading dermatologist said tens of thousands of people with skin complaints will find it hard to tolerate being near the bulbs as they cause conditions such as eczema to flare up.

The Department for Environment warned shards of glass from broken bulbs should not be vacuumed up but instead swept away by someone wearing rubber gloves to protect them from the bulb's mercury content.

In addition, it said care should be taken not to inhale any dust and the broken pieces should be put in a sealed plastic bag for disposal at a council dump – not a normal household bin.

None of this advice, however, is printed on the packaging the new-style bulbs are sold in. There are also worries over how the bulbs will be disposed of.

It is also dangerous to epileptics:
QUOTE
The 'green' light bulbs which will be made compulsory in British homes can cause people with epilepsy to experience symptoms similar to the early stages of a fit.

The charity Epilepsy Action says that those with the condition are complaining of dizziness, loss of focus and discomfort after being exposed to light from the energy-saving bulbs. The cause of the problem is not known as the bulbs do not flicker at the rate that would normally cause ill-effects.

But the issue has become prominent because of EU plans to phase out all traditional bulbs within two years and replace them with low-energy versions. Almost half a million people in the UK suffer from epilepsy and the Government has acknowledged there may be a problem.

And yet we are practically being forced to use them (this information obviously count for normal fluorecent lights too)
RustPuppet
Real smart idea putting them in street lights too. "Don't worry dear, I'm just taking a drive to fetch my epilepsy medication!"

Damn, and I use these things in all my lights.

Okay, I never knew that.

You win some, you lose some?

Scary stuff!

So where to from here?

Are the manufacturers going to change the way the bulbs are made?

Eish.

AFAIK the bulbs emit light through the electrical current ionising the mercury vapour in argon gas, which then "excites" the phosphor and thus emitting light. since every flourescent/energy saver works this way(the energy "saving" is through the use of the chemicals), the change would have to be a complete redesign.

to the best of my knowledge energy saving lights & fluorescent lights use basicely the same princepile
to operate. It's called low pressure mercury vapor. The mercury vapor is the core around which the lamp operates. Another variant is high pressure mercury vapor lamps. Link

We can label them as population control and shoot them out of police guns instead of rubber bullets?
Wolf
Well some people reckon it's a load of crap (these lights being so harmfull) but they are definatly not as enviromentally friendly as the old type after their life expecancy have passed.

And yes we've had Mercury, sodium and fluorecent lights for a long time witch has basically the same effect

In the factory where I work we have to have a special disposal setup in which we crush the tubes. The people who dispose of it tells me thy fill the drum with some kind of chemical, encase it in a cubic meter of concrete & dump it in the deep sea. crazy.gif

Fluor in itself is already a deadly substance, I remember way back when i was a kid, my dad warned us not to go anywhere near a broken tube.
Carrots
erm... i broke a few because they looked so cool when they go "pop".
Then of course everyone played with mercury as a child, which can be absorbed through the skin.

Its true that long term effects can be damaging, "normal" exposure isnt a reason to be concerned I think.
Wolf
Ya probably not, but it can have serious effects on your health if you (for instance) cut yourself on a broken one and get some of that shit in your blood

human beings fucking suck .. my god .. so fooking stupid wallbash.gif
