So I get a software UPDATE request from apple (cause I use quicktime) and the UPDATE is trying to install safari for windows onto my machine???!

I let safari install coz I didn't know what it was at first.
It has been removed subsequently, along with Quicktime...

Very sneaky, although you don't have to install it if you don't want to. Just deselect the tick box and continue with your update.
The benchmarks under Windows are giving Firefox some serious competition though so I reckon I may try it on my Windows box to see how it performs.

When it comes to browser compatibility, IE is always the most important to companies, then they will do firefox on windows. If there's time and resources they will do Opera and Safari and a Linux browser. Just because a site is standards compliant doesnt mean it works on all browsers.
