ROME, Italy (AP)

The Vatican has updated the list of mortal sins to relate to the age of globalization.

Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published on Sunday by the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, that known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole.

Girotti, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions told the paper that whilst sin used to concern the individual mostly, today it had a mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization.

A list of these 'new sins' ...

QUOTE
On March 9, 2008 the Vatican newspaper published an interview with Bishop Gianfranco Girotti (head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body which oversees confessions and plenary indulgences), in which he listed seven modern social sins.[3] [4] These "social" sins were given as follows:

* Environmental pollution
* Genetic manipulation
* Accumulating excessive wealth
* Inflicting poverty
* Drug trafficking and consumption
* Morally debatable experiments
* Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

While I understand that the cardinal sins were not 'given to us by God' as with the Commandments, it seems a bit questionable to update them like this. Moving with the times is one thing, but making it a sin to be excessively wealthy is ridiculous.

My reasons for leaving the Church just keep growing.

Oh, the irony!

Isn't the catholic church the richest in the world? tongue.gif

Heart transplants were once considered a morally debatable experiment and so was others, if not the majority, of medical research at some stage or another.

Catholicism.... ermm.gif now i understand why catholics answer "i'm catholic" wheneva i ask one if they're christian.

I think so the vatican like owns controls so many things....

The Vatican is full of crap. First they say that the bible is the book that is the exact tale of Christ and all that God set into motion and all that jazz. Years later they retract this statement and change it to; The bible is more of a lifestyle guideline than a factual text.
Now they are updating the sins?

Thank God I'm not Catholic!

I think I'd have to slap a nun and tell her to pass it on up the food chain...

Way to go Emperor Pope-atine

I for one quite like the idea

* Environmental pollution
* Genetic manipulation
* Accumulating excessive wealth
* Inflicting poverty
* Drug trafficking and consumption
* Morally debatable experiments
* Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

Everything there sounds good to me, except for excessive wealth tongue.gif

Hehe. Me too. I sure plan on accumulating excessive wealth soon enough. biggrin.gif

Standard anti-scientific and anti progress approach by the church...

Ban morally debatable experiments, like stem cell research, genetic manipulation could help with numerous diseases. This sounds like the modern day banning of galileo's heresy.

The environmental pollution, the violation of fundamental rights, those at least I can accept, the rest is the church up to it's usual crap.
