So, in a bunch of threads I have noticed that people use the currency marker "R" What is this currency? Where is it used? Does it have denominations or is it a singular unit?
Anyone have the answer?
Thanks

in America you guys use dollars
this forum is based in South Africa even though its very cosmopolitan in its membership but it initially started in South Africa - so the classifieds etc locally would refer to the currency you see as denoted by the R - the R is called Rands ..... at current exchange rate we need around eight rand and five cents to buy one dollar (US)
100 cents make a rand (im sure thats easy enough to figure out from what ive said above)
hope that this answers the question adequately

Much thanks! I appreciate it greatly.
On a side note, Would you say that South Africa would be a good place to visit someday?

Magnificent mile good spot I assume, man the hotels are a little pricey though

The whole city is expensive as hell. I hope you're a non smoker, cigaretts are over $5 a pack in some places. I don't know how you feel about gay people but boy's town has some great vegan restaraunts. Also I'd reccomend wrigleyville for some great pubs, John Barlycorn's for example. It's a pub on the first floor and a dance club on the second floor. So whatever you're into. Not to mention one of the few places where you can get $5 pints of guinness.

They re-directed the route because the elephants disturbed my pet lion as they ran past.

$5 0_o !!!!
Over here I find R20 ($2.50) a bit expensive for a Guinness!
And ignore the guys above. There is NO wild animal races of any kind in SA.

The big tourist traps pretty close to each other? The wife wants to go to all the museums and what not. Whats the lake area like? A developed waterfront?

Hunter, all the museums are kinda close to eachother... Within walking distance. Under $7 cab ride. I'd definately recommend the aquarium and the museum of natural history. Don't forget to take a pic in front of the bean in melinium park. The fountain is cool too. Don't give anybody any money though. Bums will pester the hell out of you. I'll post again if I can think of any other cool places. You visiting in the summer yeah?

You're flying? Being so close I would have guessed you would drive. It's only six hours. Seeing as how you're going to be around in the summer be sure to get to the Brookfeild Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens. The zoo is great in early summer and mid winter. The garden is spectacular. Though I'm not sure how long it'll take to get to these places from downtown. (It's been far too long since my last visit)
And as a warning. Stay off the subway whenever possible. Drunks and junkies start shit all too often...
