We have friendly debates at work once every couple of weeks, and next week's topic is BEE. I'm always keen for a friendly squabble so I've decided to participate.

So, instead of fighting amongst ourselves here, I'd like to hear your points on why you disagree with BEE.

Note that you're not limited to disagreeing with it; while I'm all for everyone having their say, the purpose of this thread is to gather as much ammo as I can so I can make sure my bases are covered during the debate. I'm also not going to limit anyone from arguing out any points here, but bear in mind the purpose of the thread when you post please.

I'll post my current points up soon, but for now, what do you lot have to say?

oh?

easy BEE concept was brillently conceptualized, yet the people who implemented had 1 thing in their mind... "I am Black I must be placed into a posi that I don't know shit so I can get paid!"

BEE was never created to be for that purpose, it was created to enable people with the proper education and capabilities be incorporated into our current corporate world.

It was never just about MONEY!

The biggest issue with BEE is when it isn't about merit. Hire the best person for the job regardless of skin colour. I accept that the quota system may have been needed to overcome prejudices and let that happen. However I know a few people who were BEE appointments that are in over their heads. Everyone around them has to then cover for them and those who were appointed based on merit are tarnished with the same brush. People assume that they are there purely because of skin colour rather than skill.

Beyond that, the rigid adherence to the quota system is wrong. BEE was meant to correct past injustices, not create new ones but sadly that is what it is doing.

BEE, brilliant in theory, necessary, but so ridiculously flawed and badly implemented in practice.

I reserve my right not to comment this time tongue.gif

I don't agree with the way BEE was implemented though.

All good points, keep them coming dudes.

Biggest problem as others have said was implementation

IMO what should have happened was a mentoring program, identify the staff and train them up. Instead of dumping someone who has the skills and throwing someone in the deep end. I have heard that people dont like this idea as the BEE person would feel like he is being spoken down to by the evil whitie once again

Is it needed? Yes. is it working? No

To make a very important point:

Say you are recruiting additional staff for your company. You spend all the money to be BEE compliant, train and nurture the new applicant as it falls in line with company policy. 6-12 months down the line, they are headhunted by some bigger corporate that is willing to pay them more money. What benefit has this really served? All you will end up doing is pay more recruitment fees, retrain a person (while paying them) for a couple of months and you will NEVER get your money's worth.

Black Economic Empowerment.

This has been instantiated by the RSA government in order to correct the imbalances caused during the apartheid era.

Problem is it is being applied in all sorts of unethical manners and currently seems only to enrich a select few (aka "in crowd" with the government connections). There are too many loopholes in the system and while the idea serves a real purpose, the practice is really up to shit.
Mr. Fun
thanks for the help. I really appreciated
