A few friends and I are planning a LAN in the Edenvale area.

It will be held every month, and possibly start in April.

Please indicate if you'd be interested.

Thanks smile.gif
RustPuppet
How many people?
Azgard
We're planning on having a maximum of 40 people to start with, and hopefuly fill all those seats. Then depending on how it goes, we'll expand to fill the entire hall, a few hundred people is the goal eventually. smile.gif

Anything else anyone wants to know don't hesitate to ask.
RustPuppet
Could be rad.

What sort of hardware setup you looking at i.e. GB hubs, ample power, etc.?

And I assume it'll be a Fri-Sun thing?

We're planning on gigabit hubs, but since we have limited capital we're negotiating with some PC shops to sponsor us the equipment. Not sure exactly whats gonna happen yet.

As for power we plan to use the venues standard power to start, should be enough for the 40 pcs, and when we have money we'll put in our own 3 phase distribution board, so power should be sorted.

At the moment its Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. But we are trying to get the venue to allow us to start on Friday night, since that seems to be the norm.

We're gonna be selling food, as well as a delivery service. And if all goes well we'll have some unique things that no other lans have smile.gif

And we'll have gaming comps for all the latest games. DC++ server, web server, etc smile.gif
Nitro Guy
sounds great dude... I havent been to one as yet, I'd definately attend though...

Dont you guys intend to charge an entry fee or something ermm.gif ? which hall is it at though?
Azgard

Thats great smile.gif Lans can be good fun.

We will have to charge an entrance fee, this will be to cover the venue rental, power requirements, security, and then the remainder will be set aside to eventually buy all the required network equipment and power equipment. Since for a few hundred people the cost of the equipment will be in the tens of thousands, according to our estimates so far.

We have yet to finalise the entrance fee, we'll decide on it once we know how much the venues will charge as well as our other costs.

At the moment we have two possible venues. Edenvale High School and the Edenvale Community Centre. We need to asses each place more thoroughly first before we decide.

The school has good flexibility and will let us stay over night, but their power supply is not adequate for many PCs, and the communtity centre has more space inside the hall and excellent power, but refuses to let us stay or leave equipment there over night.

So each venue has its problems unfortunately..
Nitro Guy
Sweet dude if i can help with anything let me know and i'll pm you my cell number, e mail addy, etc

I live quite nearby so if you need anything let me know even if its just to plug in network cables or use my car to help transport equipment and get things set up before opening and closing.

I have a Bcom Acc and 3 years auditing articles. So if you need accounting records, financial planning, budgeting, etc help i could probably be of assistance...
rurounikenshin
I'd like to pull in aswell from time to time.

Will be awesome to meet the guys and play some games etc.
Azgard
Thanks Nitro Guy, I'll let you know closer to the time if we need any help. For the moment we won't be worrying about recording the finances since it's not a business, but in a years time maybe wink.gif

Hope to see you there rurounikenshin smile.gif

Any suggestions? Maybe I've forgotten something important,
RustPuppet
Yeah, that's how most of us got to know each other, lank disorganized (and mostly drunken) LANs at Relic Viper's house.

Good times.
Azgard
Lol, sounds fun smile.gif

On the topic of alcohol, is it a good idea for a LAN or a bad idea?? I noticed Liberty and Mayhem ban alcohol..
RustPuppet
Personally I think alcohol should be allowed. People usually bring it in either way though.
Azgard
Alright, I agree. My friends though don't like the idea of it at all, which is understandable when there are a lot of people.

Will have to talk to them, the rules will probably all be relaxed in the beginning anyway smile.gif
cyfermaster
you'll need a licence of sorts I think if you wanting to serve it. If people are bringing their own then I think it is a different story. I reckon it's a bad idea though at a venue where you are planning to have a lot of people. If it is at someone's house, then it is a different story.
Azgard
Na not wanting to serve it, that would be too much hassle for us to acquire the license. Would just be to allow or not allow people from bringing there own.

True.. What's a lot of people though? 40 or 300? wink.gif
cyfermaster
40 is already a lot IMO to allow to bring alcohol. It's fine amongst mates, but when you have a bunch of unknown people it is bound to go south for the winter.
rurounikenshin
The rule should be stated at the beginning of the evening.

If some one gets too rowdy an out of control then they get kickeed out. Finish and klaar.
Azgard
Yea, sounds good. Like what we have planned already smile.gif
Nitro Guy
Well if its the school venue, then will they even allow the alcohol onto the property?
AFAIK Schools generally aren't prepared to do that

Its easy if its one or two guys....
Gonna be hard to manage if you've got say 5 or more dudes in that group ermm.gif ...
they might just decide to vandalise shit too...

In that case maybe the community centre is a better place.. its a public place so if shit gets vandalised you guys dont have to fork out for any damages.

Azgard
True, although the school doesn't need to know. But our official position will still probably be that alcohol is not allowed.

Actually even at the community centre we pay a deposit, which we don't get back, so if something happens we have to pay.

But I don't think security will be an issue, one of my partner's job is just the security, and he's gonna have a few guards for the place so if someone doesn't wanna leave we'll have ample motivation to make them. But I doubt there'll be any problems
Nitro Guy
one more thing on the security side now that you mentioned security guards... i assume they're gonna look after our cars too biggrin.gif or am i pushing it here

I'd also like to know.
Azgard
Of course smile.gif

At the school at least, there's enough place to park inside for now. A guard will be at the gate, a proper big electric one (the gate), letting people in and out. There is also a big parking lot for the school with gates and big flood lights, but we hope to not use that as it will be far to carry your PCs.

Car security is a big concern, it's the main reason we're gonna have security guards in fact. And of course to keep everyones PCs safe.
RustPuppet
Fine, I shall bring a hip flask.
cyfermaster
al-co-holic bleh.gif
Azgard
As long as you're discreet about it I'm sure it'll be fine smile.gif Just don't start singing at 3AM or falling over chairs please wink.gif
RustPuppet
No, I'm not 16 anymore. I'll just add a nip or two to my Coke while I game/pillage.

BTW cyfer, I think you're confusing the terms 'drunk' and 'alcoholic' biggrin.gif
Azgard
How does everyone feel about a wet t-shirt competition at the LAN??? wink.gif
RustPuppet
. /.

Wait, we are talking chicks here, right?
Azgard
Are you not volunteering?? wink.gif

Yes I was meaning for the girls.. Provided we can get some nice girls to the LAN. Hopefully we can offer some entertainment that can keep the girls busy while their guys play games dry.gif
Nitro Guy
Any updates AZ? i recall you said this is gonna start sometime in April? smile.gif
Azgard
For some reason I didn't get an email about your reply Nitro Guy, sorry about that sad.gif

The LAN is now planned and everything is going ahead.

It will be held in the Edenvale High School Hall on the 28th of June, from 9am to 11pm (or so).

Entrance will be R50.

Have a look at the Facebook event for more details http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=16826848940
Or send me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.

We have limited space at the moment unfortunately, so we're trying to fill up the seats by reservation first. Meaning we need to know in advance whose coming and who isn't.
Azgard
Our first LAN went great, not many people at all, but we expected that.

If you're interested in coming in the future, join our Facebook group as we'll update and post new events on
there first http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=26421385931.

We have big plans for the next few months smile.gif
