No, I don't think it's a case of jealousy.

I have the fortune of being in a relationship currently and the expectations that are there because of some hyped up, over commercialised tradition are patently ridiculous. Rather than disappoint her, I've had to do what is deemed to be the norm. I have taken the effort needed to find and obtain gifts that will be deemed appropriate, spent time to find a suitable card for my sullen and acerbic demeanour and worked to present this all as if today is the one day of the year we should show we care. As if the other 364 don't matter and just aren't really part of it.

If you care for the person, you'll show it constantly and don't need valentines day, if you don't care for the person, you don't need it either. Strong alcohol, a convincing smile and a dash of rohypnol will do the trick then.

REVQ I understand where you're coming from but personally i like Valentines day... Yip i agree that you should care the other 364 days but yeah its just the atmosphere created by it and an opportunity to do something extra special for your partner...

On the other hand i also see your point it does suck to be Obliged to do it...

Some people think that everything will be better and more romantic on V day. V day is a day where you treat your loved one because you have to.

Being in love and being in a relationship are distinct. It's quite easy to be in a relationship and not love the person, I think just about all of my relationships have been like that, although I did get confused once or twice.

As for love, love is just a chemically induced illusion, it's nothing but hormones and the bodies chemicals altering your thought patterns. It is not some grand state of being, it is not fate directing you to her (or any gender combo), not destiny or anything, just a natural high from the bodies own drugs. And like anyone tripping on a drug, you'll do crazy stuff you wouldn't normally consider. What's so great about it?

And lastly, you like to do something special for your partner? Surely it would be more special to do it out of the blue at some random time than because society has decided this is the day to do it?

Even though i have to do something special because it is the accepted norm.... I really dont mind I like doing it whether its expected or not...

Valentines day has lost all meaning. Once again a holiday which used to hold special meaning is taken over by corperations and bastardized into another over-hyped gift giving occasion just so some poor sod can get some.
