Uhm, Golf MK1's are not made to handle that speed well... I would NOT feel safe in that car.

I strongly beg to differ... ermm.gif

This particular golf has been heavily upgraded to handle the speed and the additional stresses...
Ran something stupid like 10 seconds flat on the quarter mile, my information is outdated though as this golf have been around since the mid to late 1990's

This car was built specifically for drag racing so it's got the relevant hardware required to keep it on the ground in a straight line.

I doubt it would so very well in a gymkhana.

Don't be mistaken for thinking this is local though, this is European car.
Originally built in Germany.

Not that hard to strengthen up a MK 1 really...

Roll cage (90% of the problem solved right here).
Cross members wielded to the chassis and inside the roof.
You can also improve rigidity by weilding a steel bar into the from valence infront of the radiator.

To improve the handling and stability:

Front (lower and upper) strut braces, rear strut brace.
Front and rear Anti roll bars.
Bigger(Wider) tyres to increase the roadholding surface of the tyres.

A decent set off coil overs will also help.

Nothing I can say to that :-p

Just a thought about this Ruro... i read on some up about this on other forums members there claim if you install roll cages it makes your car unroadworthy... some say your car is still street legal with it... Whats the deal with this?

Ask these same people why a roll cage would make a car unroadworthy and see what they say.

That's balls mate.

There is no law prohibiting you from fitting a roll cage to a road car that I know of... think I have the official traffic laws some where on my laptop at home.
I'll mail them to you (PM me your address).

If anything a roll cage will increase the safety of your car. The cabin will be less likely to collapse in on you.

Tristan from the VW Club has a chromed roll cage fitted in his MK2, he even has a stripped out interior but from the outside his car looks stock.

The only time you will have an issue is if you've kitted your road car to look like a race car and don't have the minimum specified items to drive on the road.
I.E. Working headlights, tail lights, indicators, brakes and a hooter.

If you advertise that the car is built for racing then the cops will pull you over at every chance they get.

The main problem in this country is that the Metro cops don't have any real concept of how cars work. So you might have a hard time convincing them that the roll cage is there for added safety rather than a racing accesory.

For example:

If they see bigger brake discs, they assume you're a street racer and fine you.
If they see crystal headlights, they assume you're a street racer and fine you.
In some cases, if you have a load exhaust, they assume you're a street racer and fine you.

They've been watching too much Fast 'n Furious as training video's to catch street racers.
