Christian Groups Claim Pro-Atheist 'Stealth Campaign' in Nicole Kidman Fantasy Film 'The Golden Compass'

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

A children’s fantasy film that stars Nicole Kidman and features a little girl on a quest to kill God has some Christian groups upset over what they believe is a ploy to promote atheism to kids.

The movie, “The Golden Compass,” is adapted from the first novel in a trilogy called “His Dark Materials” by English author Philip Pullman, an outspoken atheist. Critics fear that the film, due out in December, will encourage children to read the anti-Church series.

"These books denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the virtues of atheism," said Bill Donohue, president and CEO of the Catholic League.

The film itself is unlikely to offend — because New Line Cinema has tried to keep religion out of it, focusing on the story of a little girl named Lyra and her journey within a strange, parallel universe.

Man, these people are morons. The movie hasn't even been released yet and they're already jumping at an 'atheist conspiracy plot.'

Never mind that when pro-religious movies are released they seem to think it's ok, but when someone who believes differently voices an opinion they crush it.

Sigh.

Surely if they raise their kids correctly, then watching something like this won't effect them. Also, they can just stop their kid from going to watch it, why boycott it. bah.

Boycott != banning. Calling on people to boycott it is not affecting freedom of speech.

I dont see how this is hypocritical either?

I personally dont think the call to boycott it is the right one. It is such an overreaction, and one that is becoming very typical of Christian groups.
Informing parents about what it is about is a pretty good idea though, and hopefully the parents will do a bit more to spend time with their children instead of just dropping them of at the movies.

By boycotting they are expressing freedom of speach, which is what they are boycotting in essence, hence the hypocrissy of the matter. At least how I see it.

All this negative uproar about it is still giving it publicity. If anything, a lot more people are probably going to see it to see what the fuss is about.
