Full Version: Registry Cleaners

Howdy all,

We've recently been hit by a nasty little Virus which Trend calls: worm_silly.scc and AVG calls wb.bkk.

Now, this worm buggers up the start menu and removes everything from it. So my users are unable to work as they cannot see anything in the start menu.

AVG is able to detect and clean the infected files but the start menu remains in an unusable state.

I would like to try a good registry cleaner on a test machine and see if this fixes the problem.

Any idea's?

If I can fix the test machine and get it running properly then maybe I could roll out the registery cleaner and sort out the rest of the machines aswell.

RustPuppet
CCleaner is the best one I've found.

Thanks mate!

Hi guys,

Here is a picture of the symptons.

As you can see, everything except the newly installed programs are gone from the start menu.

We have quite a few machines in this state and the users are starting to moan.

An interim solution thus far has been to backup user data and re-image the machines completely.

Eish.

Any idea's?

Have you tried a system restore? It may help... Will see what else I can think of.

You could try running the Windows Explorer repair option in the attached repair tool, but I am not sure it will work...

I'll try anything at this point.

Thanks mate.

Clear out your registries completely and then perhaps run a full deep system scan and hopefully you might be able to solve this issue.

(Thnx CM)

Temporary solution could be to go and get Object Dock.

It will give you a Mac style toolbar thingy that could help solve the problem for now, drag your stuff onto it.

You can see the set up i am using on my Desktop Screenshot, u can also make it look like this.

Their is an absolute ton of cusatomization options as well.

Its free and could be usefull to stop your users complaining

Clearly he says that AVG has cleaned the infected files. It is just the start menu that remains unusable.

He is looking for a registry cleaner.

While that is a good suggestion, messing with the registry isn't the best thing to do. You only really want to get rid of the bad registry files.
RenegadeNukes
Ah i see ^^

But as a last resort, its better than the block rf
RustPuppet
Do you work for ObjectDock?

He could also just add the options back to the start Menu. Right click on Task Bar and select properties. Then proceed as follows:

1. Select the Start Menu Tab.
2. Click Customise.
3. Click Add.
4. Browse to the .exe of the file you wish to add to the start menu.

Not sure if you can drag and drop.

However, I think this would be quite time consuming if you have to do it for a load of users, which is why we are looking for a solution that is easy to implement on all machines.

Personally, I have never enjoyed obect dock. sad.gif It kept hanging my machine at work.

lol... no!

But i am vouching for them - cause they solved my long lasting sidebar hunt and i love 'em. Just like i don't work for MS but bur still vouch for vista tongue.gif

BTW i hate Macs so i only use it as a sidebar, the image i posted was for informatonal purposes

Hm.... ye old P4 can manage it comfortably at home...

Would save time imho as you its drag and drop to throw stuff on.

What blasphemy.

Use a Mac for a day and I guarantee you'll have newfound respect for them, and even miss a lot of their features when you return to your PC.

Hell, if Macs were cheaper and had more game releases I'd probably drop PC for good.

Mac Pro + 24" LCD + Leopard = major schwing
RenegadeNukes
Each to their own, i used a mac for 3 months (os tiger) and i hated it. The interfacxe pissed me off so much and i can not stand nopt having a start menu. I never got why people liked it at all. I hated it, only thing i did like was iMoveHD and a few other bits and bobs (myexpose for example)

Was so happy when i went back to XP. I missed some of the ui bits in XP, but with Windows Switchers and SmartFlip for Vista i no longer even miss it. Hell i could get the source code for MyExpose and put it on Vista if i wanted. But i love smartflip and Windows Switcher so much. Its amazing

Yep thats me

You could do what people have been trying to get right for years just like that? ermm.gif

BTW MyExpose is the (poor) Vista clone, the Mac version is called Expose.

LOLOLOL. You say you love object dock so much cause it has this and that. THAT IS EXACTLY what Mac uses. I mean that little object dock thing at the bottom where you launch all your applications from is just like object dock, only better. You can drag and drop things to it. LOLOLOL. That made my day. Thanks Nukes.

PS. back on topic. clap.gif biggrin.gif

Edit: I don't even use a mac. Not because I don't like them, cause I do like them. Although there are 1 or two things I would enhance on them.

I use it as a sidebar and nothing more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As my desktop screenshot shows i love my taskbar and start menu! I only added the screenshot of it in "Mac" form to display what is can do.

You've missed it argh........

Anyway enough of that, I despise Mac and that is my opinion. Vista is Better IN MY OPINION and i like Switcher and SmartFlip better in any case (than expose).

Lets end this off topic ness and wait for ruro to get back to us

Mr. Magic Matrix
Just to join in a bit!

I like the Mac's ui, but a lack of games and software meant that i never really would use one. Myexpose is cool but some stuff is really irratating, like having to cliklc the red button 20 million times to close the program.

Vista is definitely cool and once i get teh new machine - i have decided to wait for the 8800 GT, it will be on it. Considering Ultimate.

I';ve seen smartflip and its pretty damn cool (i've got a link somewhere)
RustPuppet
Nukes would you be willing to act on that claim of making an Expose clone? It would be nice to have some other options for the crap already available.

BTW Leopard has been called the best OS ever made, maybe give it a try before you sign up to Team Vista smile.gif

Nope, I didn't.

To go on what Rusty says, Windows actually runs quicker on a MAC. Hard to believe, but I have witnessed it first hand. and I am not talking Leopard or Tiger, I am talking Windows XP etc...
rurounikenshin
Here's another interesting twist.

Now things are starting to dissappear from the Control Panel.

I logged onto a machine as an Administrator and wanted to check the event viewer as this particular machine kept randomly restarting or shutting down.

Admin Tools? Empty.

Eish, looks like another re-image for this machine.
cyfermaster
you could just re-install the admin tools, but I think a re-image would be best.

any news on meeting Jess' sister. biggrin.gif
rurounikenshin
Eish, at this rate it looks like we'll be spending the first two months of next year backing up users data and re-imaging machines.

Frikken useless Trend. I've already given in the recommendation to use another anti-virus application.

Between my previous job and this one I've yet to see Trend do anything but sit idly by as machines go to hell from virus infections.

Oh, Michelle will be up in JHB in the new year. I'll make a plan for you mate!
Hehe.
cyfermaster
I don't envy you dude. Sounds like quite a mission. I will see if i can find anything else though.

Spot man. Michelle. LOL. I've always had a thing for Michelles. tongue.gif I think we should continue this via PM.
RenegadeNukes
Argh....

Man i feel sorry for ruro at the moment, looks like the worm or whatever is still on your machine. Re-imaging takes such a long time. Good job getting rid of Trend though, even $%^&*$# Norton is better than it.

Not me, my bru (software engineer for MS tongue.gif ) has been working on it for quite some time in his own time (his job is his HOOBY). Don't really know what people see in it though. It aint great in my opinion

QUOTE

perhaps so, but i am already signed on happily. and thoroughly enjoying the experience and hacking the registries while i am at that tongue.gif

Really? i may have a go next time i\m shopping for a PC

Besides this whole mac vs Windows thing is way off topic anyway. Besides i've used a mac, didn't like it for whatever reasons and i'm a happy windows chappy. ObjectDock is used as an Office toolbar replacement for me. Not a start menu one.
rurounikenshin
Eish, looks like it's re-imaging FTL next year Jan.

ARGH!
