Ok, so I'm looking to build a new box. I've used AMD in the past, but I'd like to go with an Intel Core 2 Duo this time, like the E6600 (?). Anyone recommend a particular motherboard to go with the CPU?

This is the same predicament that I was in...

General opinion was to go for the Asus P5K, as it has the P35 chipset which suports the new Intel Penryn chips that will be coming out soon. If you can then get it, or a higher range model like the P5K-deluxe.

Why link to another site Vampyre?

I'm sure between myself and Fishfly we can answer all the possible questions you might have.

@ Whoopdeedoo

Rather get yourself a E6750 or even a E6550.

The 1333fsb is quite a bit quicker than the 1066fsb cpu's.

Motherboards:

Well depending on your budget, you could go for any P35 based motherboard, Asus P5K or a genuine Intel Dragontail motherboard.

I can also supply you these items.

If you want me to quote you, send me your details (name, surname, cell number and e-mail address) to sieliefs( at )yahoo.com.

Kind Regards

Just to back Slick here... the E6750 is cheaper and will out perform the E6600 plus it's a 1333FSB cpu.

If you have the cash, why not go for a quad core. Better long term

Otherwise, welcome to the forum!

Ok ok, I was in the wrong, I admit it.

It was just easier to post a link as opposed to having the WHOLE conversation again.

My input (and from what I've learnt), get a P35 chipset, Asus P5K looks the best option, Intel 'Dragontail Peak' is really cool, (I was gonna get it just coz of the name) but it has absolutely NO overclocking abilities.

For CPU, I'd save and get a Q6600, they about R1300 more than the Core 2 Duo but come on, its Quad Core. I realise that the price difference is REALLY big but TBH it'll be worth it, you'll only need to upgrade in another 3 maybe 4 (maybe even 5) years.

No worries biggrin.gif

Judging by the CPU usage in newer games like Crysis I'd say the cost of a quad core is justified at this point, but I don't think it'll last you longer than a couple years.

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz (1066FSB 8MB)

it's about R600 more than the E6750
