A Virus is a piece of computer programming that is designed to have a negative effect on your computer. Their are literally millions of different viruses on the internet and all designed to have a varied effect on your computer. To quote Wikipedia

QUOTE
Many personal computers are now connected to the Internet and to local area networks, facilitating the spread of malicious code. Today's viruses may also take advantage of network services such as the World Wide Web, e-mail, and file sharing systems to spread, blurring the line between viruses and worms. Furthermore, some sources use an alternative terminology in which a virus is any form of self-replicating malware.

Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk. Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply replicate themselves and perhaps make their presence known by presenting text, video, or audio messages. Even these benign viruses can create problems for the computer user. They typically take up computer memory used by legitimate programs. As a result, they often cause erratic behavior and can result in system crashes. In addition, many viruses are bug-ridden, and these bugs may lead to system crashes and data loss.

Everyone who uses the internet will no doubt get a virus at some point of time, thow people stop the virus from wreaking havoc is based on the protection that they have given their computer beforehand.

An email virus is a virus spread through an email attachment. No doubt the best way to stop yourself from getting it - it simply not to open ANY attachments from people who you don't know / trust explicitly. Especially if it has a .exe extension. That is a big no-no!!!!!!!!!

The most essential part will be a good updated Anti-Virus Scanner. Personally i would reccommend these;
  • AVG 7.5 - Personally my favouring Anti Virus software, is very easy to use, effective and believe it or not. Is completely free. It is not a memory hog and you will be easily to use it
  • Nod32 - It isn't free, but a damn effective AV Solution.
In addition to an Anti Virus scanner, you will need a good Effective Firewall to help shield your computer . If you are on XP SP2 - you will have Windows Firewall on it. My words for it "Piece of Shit". You must ditch it immediately. If you are on Vista you are on much more secure footing. But i would still reccomend you take a Firewall app as well.
  • Zone Alarm - Undoubtably the BEST! Have used for years and i swear by it. Customizable, easy to use, and FREE
Finally a good Spyware / Ad-aware program is good to do the final sweep. In this case the undisputed champ will be Lavasoft's free program. Ad-Aware SE.

Hope this helps
