Apologies for the shitty pics, I'll take better ones in the day after its had a good valet.

some work to be done.

a chip, tinted windows, new rims, some sound (although it must be said the standard sound is NOT bad at all)

I actually had no idea that diesel turbo engines were so fucking ballsy, that car HOPS.

Even though this is the 2nd golf I have owned, I honestly have some new found respect for German cars but will remain sworn off BMW for the rest of my natural life
Fishfly
ohhh what's that shimmer on your license plate???? biggrin.gif pity they don't work anymore with these damn radars sad.gif

w00t.gif nice car paul grats man! clap.gif

when am I going for a drive?
Valheru
Nice.

A chip you say? Standard they are already making 90-oddkw (or is that 102 like the Audi), what is that one pushing?
CrEaTi0n
Hahaha. you still need to porra it up wink.gif
Paul
rotfl. correct ian.

Val, stock standard this one pushes 103 kw

I need about 135 to grill Rob's Polo into the ground.

fishy, your sister can come for a spin anytime.
just make sure she's wearing panties or she'll slide off the leather seats.

This baby is guaranteed to make panties moist.
cyfermaster
haha. That Polo hauls ass. Nice car Paul. smile.gif

Here's a set of rims that I would recommend for the car.

19" BBS CH's notworthy.gif drool.gif

YUM YUM!

congrats Paul - enjoy the new ride - yep those diesels do have loads of torque - but if im not mistaken you should have about 320n/m of torque - so yeah thats way more than the 220n/m that my petrol powered POLO GTI manages - but yeah im also gonna get a remap done too

about trying to outdo Robs TDI - he will still have a better power to mass ratio - so it might just be that because he is lighter he may pull away better in the first three gears - theres a huge weight difference between the two the unladen weight on the golf is 1318 kg - whilst on the polo its around 1129 kg (thats on the new model) - the older one may be marginally lighter cos the differences in the facelift bumpers etc - but the almost 190kgs means that its almost as if your car has two adults and a kid sitting extra - so even if you get the same amount of power as him on the flywheel it might be a bit difficult for you to pull away from him

the reason why i say that if you have 135 or so KW Rob will still be ahead is because i remember him mentioning that he has had the remap done already - so he is already at around the 130kw plus mark im sure - so with his weight advantage id would say that you would still need an exhaust and a wider downpipe and then a forge diverter valve and then maybe a decat then a stage two remap - then maybe you might drill him a bit - total cost of all that should be around 12k or so - if you still have some more extra cash ie around R8k or so more then maybe some H&R springs and maybe some Koni sport shocks - and you will be good to go - cos then you should have around 150kw with maybe close to around the 400n/m on the torque plus the handling to match with that extra R20k - and you will probably surprise a few golf gti's too

19" BBS CH's
great rims - only problem with that size is the cost of the tyres - but they do look great on both Shaun and Craigs cars up in those pics

QUOTE

nah ...... if you listen to the standard sound after listening to a well set up aftermarket system you will cry - just even replacing only the headunit will give you huge improvements in sound quality - the factory headunit in mine costs R3620 from the factory - but its way inferior to my kenwood aftermarket cd reciever with dual 24 bit Burr Brown digital to analog converters which only cost me around R2k - if i wanted MP3 as well it would have still cost me less than the factory sound - but if they leave it out they still only discount you around R1k - but charge the next guy where they use your headunit R3620 - so its not worth it to leave out the standard sound

but with all my comments aside - it seems like an awesome buy - and i hope she gives you many many years of economical trouble free motoring - so enjoy her boet wink.gif

Thanks Naughty biggrin.gif

I am not planning on entering competitions but I do want decent bass and to replace the head unit with an MP3 player or something that I can plug an ipod into. any ideas?
Gitano
Dude.
me < Jealousy

Fuck I hate you sad.gif

Personally, I dont like the 19" on a golf, they actually look too big IMO, I prefer a nice set of 17", seems to fit better with the size of the car.
But thats just me! And of course, it could just be because I have more chance of ever affording a set of 17's!

Easiest and simplest option to get an iTrip or a Car Cassette Adapter. Just tune your FM Radio and lo and behold it works. It will cost nothing compared to getting a dedicated one for your car

those BBS brand new would be around R12k to R18k - tyres would be around R3500 each - depending on brand

you could get 18's for around R5k and tyres for much less than what the 19's cost - my golf 5 gti replica's cost R4500 for the rims and i paid R4600 for the tyres on special at tiger wheel and tyre - that included an all road insurance as well as balancing and alignment - those are pirelli p-zero nero's - now when i went to find out replacement costs for the pirelli's tiger reckons on special they were R4600 per set - but now that the special is over they are R3145 each - bridgestone 18's are around R3500 each for the 225/40/18's as originally fitted in the GTI

as for size for rims for the golf 5 17's would look too ordinary but you would find a huge variety of those for around R7k - if you can get some 225/40/18's on special then those 18" GTI replicas with relevant tyres would make your car look like a GTI

heres what mine look like - but i guess i bought them at the right time - getting these now with my size of tyre would easily cost you around R14k now and those tyres would be too low for your car but heres a pic

those FM frequency modulators are basically useless - ive heard one which sounds like shit gone bad for a month when you are in adverse weather or areas which are high in static electricity (or during storm times) - and the frequency response is only like 40hz to 15000hz which means you miss out on the lowest octave and around half an octave of the upper registers (since the highest octave is 10000hz to 20000hz) - so id not be using those FM thingies

just get an MP3 player like alpine or pioneer or sony or kenwood and most of those will do - just gotta get all those tracks onto discs - but 120+ songs per disc will do perfectly IMHO - but with most entry level headunits you will need optional adapters to make it work with an ipod or a headunit with and aux in - the ones with a built in aux in (in rca form) can be a bit pricier then the entry level units

for a really decent quality unit id use something like this

http://www.autostyle.co.za/prodview.php?pr...ndstr=&str=

with the following adapter cable

http://www.autostyle.co.za/prodview.php?pr...ndstr=&str=

which would allow you to control the ipod from the headunit - and its a direct cable connection - also its an alpine which IMHO is a topshelf sounding unit - im regretting changing from alpine to a higher rated kenwood - the alpine still sounds better

sexy, nice wheelz

Thanks JC

Naughty, I had those exact same concerns re the mp3 player / Fm frequency modulators.

Quality of sound.

Those are the EXACT mags I want

I'll have to start slowly though, tints and a very good valet and paint treatment is first on my list followed by sound then tyres and rims (I still got enough tread left for another 30 000 km, so that gives me quite a while to save aside some cash for those mags and tyres)

well those rims in the replica's are not bad - they go for R4500 at autostyle

http://www.autostyle.co.za/prodview.php?pr...ndstr=&str=

you would need the 5/112pcd version in 18 x 8j and 225/40/18 tyres so that you know what to look for - these suit the car - they not like the BBS CH's which are a great choice but a tad bit pricey - maybe you could find replica's of the BBS - but 19" tyres would kill your budget at replacement time - if you take the detroit replica's in 17" though - the autostyle ones are shiny as well - the 17's are R4500 and the tyres are around R600 each instead of around R3500 as in the 18's and 19's - but you can decide earlier to the time

about the tint id do a smash and grab instead of normal tint - if you were here in durban i could hook you up with a smash and grab for around R600 which is helluva cheap and its a guaranteed job - bubbles means the offending side gets pulled off and redone - thats around half what the official guys charge - not sure what the guys charge up in Gauteng though

but yeah as ive said above - hope she gives you many happy miles of motoring - so enjoy
Paul
to be honest I might just go for the 17's

The 19's are out of my price range.

I am thinking of the security tint / smash n grab but how dark can I go?

I don't want the cops looking in when I am on my cell phone

i think that 35% is legal

tint works the opposite way BTW since that lets 35% of light through - whereas 25% lets only 25% of the light through - so 25% would be very dark but a bit illegal if im not mistaken while the 35% tint would be lighter and let more light in (always thought it was the other way myself) - just check with the guys whop are gonna do it for you - will find out more about it - but i havent bothered with tint cos i dont like how it reacts when its raining - you cant see anything outside on a rainy night - just blurry lights is all - so i want to be able to see properly so ive stuck to the factory tint which is a very delicate shading - but just barely noticeable - but you can see out perfectly at anytime - if you drive mostly in the day then tint would be appropriate - but im a bit of a night owl

nothing wrong with the 17's - looks nice too - and those 205/40/17 tyres are good as well as being cheapish since thats a very popular size - im wishing that i went that route myself - would save a lot of cash in the long run - i got sucked in by an initial special - but replacing those means id have to sell an arm and a leg and maybe a kidney too thumbdown.gif

heres one of my buddy's cars with the same rims in the 17's - looks just as good IMHO

the audi TT rims look just as good in the 17's - you can get those in replica's fro around R3500 - and maybe polish those to look like this for around another R1k - and it looks awesome on a lowered car

I always thought it was about 24%, strange no one even follows that rule but whats even weirder is that the upright SAPS never pull drivers over telling them to change it (or it doesnt even get checked when tinted in the first place)

you obviously havent been to durban where the metro have impounded cars or made guys pull off the tint at roadblocks

that's a bit harsh.

but maybe in Durban they do it because they have a hard time telling who is driving a vehicle because the charous seem to blend in with their tint renske.gif
