Does anybody know how to remove a folder from a harddrive that has a shitload of files in it? It has so many files in it, that windows explorer crashes even on checking the properties.
We also tried Freecommander, Winrar (with delete), etc....
Formatting is not an option.
Note: W2K Server, NTFS

Crashes the machine. Also tried remove dir /q /whatever, which also crashes the machine (after 3 hours).
Also cannot use a Win95 startup disc with deltree, it's an NTFS partition.

oh the other long way around it is to delete files in segments by searching for them from that folder
win+F
find files and folders, browse to the folder and search that folder alone, then search for something inside that folder that wont return too many options for instance
*b*.jpg *k*.txt *10*.doc
and delete them in small segmets

You might try zipping the whole thing then deleting it. Use the 'store' option too as compressing it could take a while.
Have you also tried shift+del?

Tried with winRAR, which crashed after a couple of hours. Shift+del also crashes the machine. Basically the moment it tries to read the folder contents, it takes a couple of hours and crashes the machine.
Will try the linux live cd thingy next week when my boss is in the other office (where the machine is at).

This actually does work. Just gonna take long, but searching by dates as you said might speed it up.
Thanks guys....

Running it now, but it seems like it is also doing a backup of the files, which we don't want. Will let you know if it succeeds or not.
Oh, and thanks for the filey thingy cyfer.
