My friend is diabetic. His life is most definately not over. He still drinks, plays sports etc... You will just need to change certain habits and get used to taking your medication every so often. It is not a problem. My gran has diabetes too, and she has had a long prosperous life. There is nothing to be worried about.

diabeties is not HIV... as long as you adjust to a good diet plan and one that keeps the diabeties in check you all good!

hey - im diabetic - no probs really - just gotta now stay away from sweets and chocolates and also the fizzy soft drinks besides for the sugar free ones - they dont taste too bad when you get used to them - plus with aspartame and acesulphame K sweeteners like candarel you will find that you dont miss the sugar too much

im on metformin - but ive been told that this will do damage to your liver in the long run - there are better medications like diamichron available now - thats if you dont have to take insulin injections all the time - but im type2 diabetic so it isnt as severe as having to have those insulin injections yet - i only found out last year though - but ive go a history of it in my family so its more hereditary in my case but accelerated by my sugar intake

but yeah - not really such a major hurdle - once you get used to the medication and the controlled diet - at least now im not so thirsty all the time and having to pee so often and also i dont get those heavy bouts of tiredness that last throughout the day nor the migraines that affect you when you bloodsugar levels are way to high (or too low for that matter) - not so difficult to control as i imagined - so good luck with your efforts

From what I've seen, diabetics live normal lives except for the insulin every now and then. I have seen a diabetic drink too much though. You might want to watch out for that. Alcohol seems to hit diabetics a bit worse than non-diabetics. And also when heavily intoxicated and you need an insulin shot it would help to have someone around to help out.

My father's uncle had diabetes for 21 years he died at age 86, so really if you follow the right diet religiously, you can live to be a 100

A good friend of mine has Type 1 Diabetes. It really isn't that bad, you just need to watch your diet and take your medication. It will take a while getting used to, but I assure you it is NOT a death sentence.

My one friend's mom has diabetes as well. She has been living alright with it for a number of years now as well. Follows the strict diet (for the most part), goes for regular walks, is in her forties, and doing pretty alright.

As long as you follow the doctor's advice, and keep stress levels low, there is no reason why you shouldn't live long and happy.

Sweetners are not tough to get used to. Heck, I use them as well and I am not diabetic (although I once had the symptoms for a loooooong time, but thankfully found out that they were there due to a stressful job, which I eventually moved on from).

I have another friend whose dad lived into his seventies, and he was diabetic for decades. It wasn't the diabetes that killed him though, it was cancer, and I must say, for a geezer, he was pretty healthy as well (until the Big C got to him).

Then there is a lady over here at work who is diabetic, who does NOT follow the strict diet, and also drinks too much at times, and smokes like a chimney. Well, she has been diabetic for about 2 years now, and normally looks pretty rundown. She does not wanna stop woth the cigs and booze though... huh.gif

Man that cracks me up, when you are seriously ill and refuse to stop doing stuff that makes it worse.
Man, if coffee was making me sick, I would stop, and that is really really saying something.

Don't worry about HoG!

Most of my family is diabetic and my gran is 96 and Type 1 Diabetic. Stick to a doctor prescribed diet, use your common sense and you will still live your life to its fullest

Best of luck, it is never easy to make the adjustment

the key words are control and exercise - control the diet and exercise a lot and you wont have too many problems

U all have been so kind thanks for that, ur a wonderful group of people.

Well its been almost two months since ive been told im diabetic, as ive stated before i thought my life was over.... with all the great support from people here an the love an support i get from my kids... ive found that i really dont think its that hard after all. Yes i had to make a lot of changes, but changes i prolly wouldn't of been able to make if i hadn't gotten so sick. In way this as sorta saved my life. Learning to live with Diabetes, is really not as bad as i thought, im actually sorta thankful.
