(CNN) -- Darfur rebels killed at least 12 peacekeepers at an African Union base in the deadliest attack yet on the peacekeeping force in its three-year mission, the AU said Sunday.

African Union peacekeeping soldiers guard an area near al-Salam camp in North Darfur, on September 5.

The overnight attack injured at least eight people and left some 25 AU peacekeepers missing, said AU spokesman Assane Ba.

AU officers told The Associated Press that 1,000 rebels from the Sudan Liberation Army stormed the AU base in the town of Haskanita.

"There is a war going on between the rebels and the government, and the AU is crunched in the middle," a senior AU officer who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue told AP.

The bloody assault came about two months after the U.N. Security Council authorized a 26,000-member peacekeeping mission in Darfur, more than tripling the AU-led force there.

Sunday's attack followed an April shooting by unidentified gunmen that killed five Senegalese AU peacekeepers in Umbaro, in northwest Darfur near the border with Chad...

Well what the hell can we do to prevent this,, people have tried everything, aid, money, appeasement, occupation, creating buffers.

Well the UN failed and left and the AU will be on its way back as well, well thats the end of Darfur. Let the @#$%^&* Rebels be left alone ot contiue leading there miserable, usless life.

The world can only try so much...

LOL... they barely tried dry.gif

I can't stand it when the UN acts as if they are powerless in these situations. What they end up doing is looking after situations too late... why can't they be more preventative?

personally if things turn to shit like that... no peacekeeping force is safe... so rather spare the peacekeeping men from the shit and let them continue to kill each other off until one comes out tops... then step in and create some form of structure in place or help the people caught in the fight...

or... blowup.gif nuke.gif them!

Who are you and what have you done with fishfly?
He never spoke so much sense in his life! You are obviously an impostor!

HOI, sometimes when you have a child, and it falls down and hurts itself, you need to step back, and let it sort itself out, otherwise it never learns, it turns into a dependent who never fully develops because everything is done for it.

Applicable to this situation, no?
Heir_of_Isildur
Africa will NEVER learn sad.gif

We see it on the news every day (actually no... we don't)... and unfortunately there are hundreds of thousands of people that are going to die for no good reason! That is well enough of a reason to try harder to stop a few dumb-fucks from screwing over an entire nation.
hunter
and this is what happens when the west leaves a volatile area, the AU is a joke

unfortunately Africa has no future, this is going to happen in more and more countries.
Fishfly
Well hopefully SA doesn't go that route in my lifetime... but if so I'll be outta here asap!

as for Africa... well look at it this way it'll keep the population down... we don't need HIV.

Remember HOI, the UN is not a nation, it needs people to voite and agree on sending a taks force into an area, when the world wakes up to what is going on, it is usually well after it has blown up
Heir_of_Isildur
No... politicians do this for a living... they know exactly what is going on... they just don't have the balls (where the US does... when their interests are protected) to fight about it sad.gif
Fishfly
Oh? I thought the US just wanted the OIL...
