Yep, the Russians have decided that it is time to return to being a world superpower. From yesterdays dramatic testing of the FOAB (Father of all Bombs - a massive Non-Nuclear warhead that has the yeild of a Nuke) and public announcements of their might

Well here is the latest

QUOTE
RUSSIA'S Prime Minister has pledged to boost the country's military might, amid growing signs that he could emerge as President Vladimir Putin's successor next year. Viktor Zubkov, an old friend of the President who served as a low-profile bureaucrat until his recent dramatic elevation, spoke as British and Norwegian jets were again scrambled after two Russian bombers probed NATO air space in the latest of a spate of such incidents in the past two months.

Mr Zubkov, whose new position has been approved by Russia's rubber-stamp Parliament, becomes the first Kremlin heavyweight to declare an interest in contesting presidential elections in March. Mr Putin is constitutionally obliged to step down and Mr Zubkov seemed to win the President's support for his bid.

Mr Putin said there were five people with a "real chance" of succeeding him — but only mentioned his little known but ultra-loyal Prime Minister by name. The extraordinary hints surrounding Mr Zubkov's future have turned the former collective farm boss into a strong candidate for the succession. Yet, given the President's proclivity for convoluted mind games, analysts warn that Mr Putin could be playing a double bluff in order to confuse Kremlin apparatchiks and avoid lame duck status. He was reported to have refused to rule out a return to office after his successor steps down in 2012.

Questioned at a meeting with academics in the city of Sochi, he said he cared about Russia's stability, and its Government needed to continue his policies.

Keen to demonstrate his allegiance to his boss, Mr Zubkov told deputies that he would dedicate his attentions to advancing Mr Putin's favourite projects — the restoration of Russia's military might and the resurgence of Russia's energy-fuelled economy.

Since Mr Putin came to power in 2000, the Kremlin has poured large amounts of cash into Russia's rusting military in what appears to be an attempt to regain the nation's superpower status.

On Thursday British and Norwegian jets intercepted Russian military aircraft after they breached NATO air space close to Britain and Finland. Finland's Prime Minister, Matti Vanhanen, demanded an explanation from Moscow over the violation of Finnish air space, the latest in a spate of recent incursions.

Two British Tornado F3 jets intercepted two Russian long-range bombers, Britain's Defence Ministry said.

The Tu-160 Blackjack bombers were initially intercepted by Norwegian F16s before they entered NATO air space patrolled by Britain.

Last night, Mr Putin was scheduled to revel in a military display of a different sort, taking the salute in Red Square from troops participating in Moscow's first military tattoo. Sixteen regimental bands, including pipe bands from Australia, Scotland, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, are taking part in the tattoo, which runs for several days.

The extravaganza is replete with historical symbolism. The presidential regiment band and the central band of the Russian Army were to be bedecked in imperial uniforms not worn since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. It is another sign of how Mr Putin, often seen as wedded to the country's Soviet past, has cherry-picked from both tsarist and Communist traditions to project Russia's might.

Well they are back and they want the world to know it

What the fuck. Is he trying to start WWIII or something

Oh and for those who missed out on the FOAB announcement. Here are some details from Wikipedia

Father of all bombs" is the nickname of a Russian-made air-delivered thermobaric weapon that is claimed to be four times more powerful than the U.S. military's GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB or the "mother of all bombs"), making it the most powerful publicly-known conventional (non-nuclear) weapon in the world.[1] It was successfully field-tested in the late evening of September 11, 2007, when it was dropped from a Tupolev Tu-160 heavy bomber with a parachute and exploded.[2]

Also Russia seems to be taking lessons from the US. Intimidate the hell out of everyone

Testing the bomb on 9/11? They trying to send a message to the USA?

That is exactly what I was thinking. No doubt it was planned to be that day for specific reasons...

Dont forge that this is Russia we are talking about. Some dude called borris could just have spilled his vodka on the keyboard by accident.

I dont see this happening. The government seems to (from my perspective) be nothing more than a figurehead. The real power in Russia is definitely not publicly elected officials.

we are still the number 1 nation in the world reguardless the amount of nukes russia makes.. and btw... it was not a nuke.. it was a bomb that had the same explosion as a nuke with out the radiation. AKA not a nuke.

how am I talking trash about your country? please point out exactly in my post where I could be talking trash about your country? I am just stating that it would appear that the RUSSIANS tested the bomb on September 11 to MAYBE send a statement.

nobody said it was a nuke. the very first post even says it is not a nuke. I think you need to read things carefully before making incorrect posts.
RenegadeNukes
Well the russians have got the money from oil and have always loved to flex military muscle, truth is none of the Nato dudes will shoot down a russian bomber or you might end up with a Nuke in your backyard
Gitano
vaccaroja, go wave a flag or something.

Try and read for a change ffs.
rurounikenshin
This could become very interesting indeed...
RenegadeNukes
I wonder what the Russians next move will be.

Tsar Bomba Version 2.0!

God knows.

BTW the Tsar Bomba was the 57 megaton monster H-Bomb that the Soviets tested in the 1970's. And it was scaled down from 100 megatons.
rurounikenshin
America has been due for a serious ass wipping for a long time.

Maybe the Russians and the Arabs should unite and put America in their place.

Sit Boo Boo SIT!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Now STFU with your American Arrogance!

Good dog!
RenegadeNukes
Ruk, who are you reffering to?
rurounikenshin
That's what Russia will say when they discipline America.

hunter
ummmm ok...

Russia "attempting" to discipline the US would end badly for everyone. One on one they dont stand a chance, and if you count allies they have even less of a chance. What I see happening is Russia/China/Ninajs teaming up vs the US/Poms/Canada/Aus/France/Germany/Japan (need I continue??)

One more thing:
Teaming up with the arabs? AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yes it would, and i beg to differ, hardly a fight. both end up nuking the living hell out of each other and there wouldn't be anything left to fight over

Conventional Fighting = USA Wins

Nuclear War = Russia kicks ass.

Always have been better and u will need to use a hell of a lot more nukes to blow russia up anyway
rurounikenshin
C'mon guys.

Let's be honest. A nuclear war of any size will be bad for everyone.

That being said.

I would still like to see some one put America in it's place.

You do know that the US has a lot more nukes than anyone else right? Even after disbanding hundreds they still have enough to wipe out the planet ten times over

Russia is a much smaller place these days, and if they decided to go nuclear they would be launching a lot of missles on their own doorstep to take out some of the surrounding countries that would be launching right back at them.

In this age of modern warfare there is no way to put the US in its place, conventional warfare wise nobody will get close to invading, and nobody is stupid enough to try a nuclear option. The only way to put the US in its place (whatever that is) is economically, similar to what China is doing
Gitano
Nice call Nukes, you forgot to mention that the US still has about 2200 more nukes than anyone else!!!

And think about it... America gets attacked, if their economy fails, the whole world is pretty much fecked! Everything all over the world is based on the greenback,, it would take some serious recovery to sort that shit out.

Now China+Russia vs US would be a bad idea sad.gif And dont even consider the Arabs, a lot of them couldn't find their arse with both hands and a flashlight.

Would never come to that though, like I said it would be Russia+China vs US/UK/Germany/Aus/Japan/Canada etc etc etc
Gitano
Yes, agreed.

Yeah plenty of tactical warheads. The Soviets were big on the strategic warfare option. However the wya things are the US will be more likely to kick war on. They have been poking at the Russians for a long time in speeches etc.

Out of those nations how many of hem would be willing to accept the potential of having a nuclear exchange with anyone. The US is running out of allies fast and there only stanch one is the UK and size wise, it will be pretty easy to wipe them out with even a Conventional ICBM strike.

QUOTE

I believe that size will make a big difference (considering the huge difference). You wouldn't be able to flatten both - in a conventional fight.

QUOTE
Russia is a much smaller place these days
What 17,000,000 million km2! Size wise you will need a shit load of bombs to decimate the arsenal and they are spread all over the the place. You would need less bombs to hit the US. Just saying

QUOTE

In 1971, the Israeli's took on all of the arab nations (practically) and whooped there asses in 6 days. They can't fight to save there asses

Besides this is all hypothetical anyway as it is very unlikely to happen, Nukes will be most probably used (if ever) by Terrorist Groups.

I reckon what the russians are doing is sending a "back-off" sign to the USA.

Iran is creating another Cuban Missile Crisis type situation. Since the US has said they may launch a strike to blow up the plants. Teh possibility of war still exists.

Iran could hit Turkey quite easily (NATO nukes stored)

it has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.[92]It also has the second largest fleet of ballistic missile submarines, and is the only country apart from the U.S. with a modern strategic bomber force.[92]

And also http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/summary.htm

So if Russia decided to strike at the US you honestly think the rest of the allies that dont agree with the current policy would say oh well sorry US...

The US are not losing allies at all, they are losing support for the Iraq situation. Everyone of the allies would back the US if there was any action from Russia.

QUOTE

And most launch sites are on both sides already known. The advantage the US has is a vastly larger number of subs already active, and they have far fewer targets. They are not going to be hitting Germany/France/UK which Russia will need to target as well

Anyways if it got to a nuclear stage its not like the only target would be nuclear silos, they would be hitting bases, cities, airports. bye bye infrastructure and then size means nothing

As you said its all hypothetical. If/when a terrorist uses a nuke against a civilian target you can say goodbye anyways, there would be nuclear retaliation on suspected terrorist sites you can bank on it, nuke bye bye afghanistan... nuke bye bye iran/syria... nuke bye bye pakistain WOOPS they have nukes too BOOOOOOOM goes the world
Gitano
We were also talking about the population size nukes, how much of Russia is virtually uninhabited?
Prior to 1989, their population was much bigger, because they still had control of the all other like stan-family countries, ala USSR.

That possibility is not to far off, these guys have been able to get there hands on red mercury and stuff. How long is it gonna be till they start chucking nmc's into the mix

How would that benefit you? What would the economic and political spin-offs be? Who would fill the power vacuum? What would this new power-player do for you?

Russia still has a long ways to go before they are a threat...
RenegadeNukes
Umm....

15,000 Nukes. I would call that threat. And thats only the tip of the iceberg mate
Gitano
Who is this Muppet, really?

Yeah Nuke, they are. I dunno what the Muppet was referring to, but it could be the military strength, as opposed to pure 'press the red button' kind of power.

Either way - how is it long way to go?

You would say it about Bahrain (with a grand total of 15 Fighters, 7 Fast Attack Boats, and a huge army of 150,000 - and yet people here say that they could thrash India in a war). But not about Russia. Geez
