Introducing the Powertune Les Paul: Gibson's Revolutionary New Self-Tuning Guitar
09.10.2007

There are certain natural laws that govern the behavior of our world: what goes up must come down; for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction; to play in tune, you have to get yourself in tune. Ever since the invention of the instrument, this third law has been grudgingly accepted by guitar players. No longer. Gibson’s new Powertune System rewrites the laws and frees guitarists from the drudgery of tuning. To play in tune, tell your guitar to tune up for you. Impossible? Not any more.

The Powertune System, available as original equipment only on Gibson guitars, is the first fully functional, performance-ready, and non-obtrusive automated tuning system, and the only self-tuning system practical for use by the professional guitarist. It is operated solely from the guitar, with no external connections or interface from a third-party device, and no need to move your busy fingers from the guitar strings and controls they are already manipulating in the course of your performance. Simply activate your guitar’s Master-Control Knob (MCK), strum the strings lightly, and within seconds the Powertune’s digital brain and Powerhead tuners work together to put you perfectly in tune. Or to achieve any open or alternate tuning, rotate the MCK to the desired preset, strum, and you’re ready to play in Open E, Dropped D, Double Dropped D, DADGAD, Open G, Hendrix Tuning (half-step down), or any of your own custom tunings.

In the time it takes you to say, “Hello, Cleveland—we think you’re gonna like this next one…” you’re back in tune, and ready to rock. No stomping on pedals, staring at the floor, or breaking eye contact with your audience, and your fretting hand doesn’t even have to touch a tuning key to get you there.

I'd like to see some reviews before I get too excited, but if it truly is an unobtrusive system as advertised I don't think it'll be long before we see these on almost every guitar in their (and the competitors) lineup.

On the downside, learning to tune by ear is IMHO a very valuable skill that'll now be lost. You aren't a true player unless you've snapped scores of strings trying out crazy tunings biggrin.gif

Holy cow! That is amazing! I want one!
Gitano
Lol, tuning by ear is lost on me anyway, I can get it close, but it still sounds sick sad.gif

I would love one. If you gave it to me for free. We all know its going to cost a bajillion dollars dry.gif
perry10
how much would a guitar like that cost?

well the guitars they are selling with them are going for 4-5000 dollars. its, neat lookin, but come on, a $3000+ device to change tuning for you?
RustPuppet
That price is about right for a decent Gibson.

And where does it say the device will cost an extra $3000?

I'm sure once they start mass producing them they'll become substantially cheaper. Hopefully other manufacturers will pick up on the idea and make there own versions. (Reminds me of Audi's Tiptronic smile.gif)

Hang on there rusty....
Did moo just make an informative post that actually meant something?!
Or am I dreaming?

FINALY. Well done Moo, its about fecking time.
RenegadeNukes
Hey don't we all make "uninformative" posts when we first join,

Welcome to the forum Moo! Hope to see more good posts from you
J-Pott
that is pretty awesome....but not worth the the money in my opinion. I personally tune by ear, one of of the many skills I aquired of my many years of being a guitar player, and yes I have broken quite a few strings. :-P
RenegadeNukes
Good ideas,

but will take some of the fun out of tuning a guitar

and empty your wallet while you are at it. Sheesh 4000 on a guitar.
RustPuppet
As previously stated, that's not an unreasonable price for a decent Gibson nowadays.

There's a face-meltingly awesome Gibson dreadnought acoustic I want that's going for R25k at the music shop up the road. I'm assembling an elite team of cat burglars as we speak.

Looks like this bad boy has been dubbed the 'Robot Guitar' and it's being released as a limited edition for now until full production gets underway next year.

And holy crap, is it sexy drool.gif

Have a look at the gallery or some demonstration videos on the official site.

RenegadeNukes
Soooo sexy...

I wish i knew how to play the guitar, and had a couple of extra thousand bucks to spare

A non-obtrusive automated tuning system?
Did anyone try it out? I mean my first impression was that this belongs to a SciFi forum rather than here... eek.gif
BTW RustPuppet has a very good point - if it does work, people will loose the ability to tune, which is very important.

The colour of the tuning device should be black too.....

It looks intrusive in white tongue.gif
