For some reason Windows decided that all .scr files must be opened with notepad. It still works from within windows but sometimes I want to run the program myself. All that happens now is that notepad opens filled with a lot of weird characters. It also happens if I test the screensaver with the rightclick menu. I'm running XP pro. Is there a way to rectify it? Thx

what options do you get on the file when you right click on it?

go into your registry and check under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Once there go to the .scr option and check what the value is set to. Type should be REG_SZ and DATA should be scrfile.
Another option would be to install a new screensaver. It should then hopefully overwrite the notepad settings for the file extension.

Change the file association in Explorer?

Now that is a good idea. Wish I had thought of it.
My machine doesn't show the SCR under the File Types option under explorer. Does yours Rusty, if it does let us know what the association to it is.

Not sure 'cos I'm on a Mac right now, but every file should be on that list.
If not just add it manually.

Lekker, mine is working anyways, but adding a new file type (if it isn't there) should work for Kaless. I checked, and when you add it, it picks it up as Screen Saver automatically.

When I add the file type windows still want to know what program to use to open it with and the list of programs it show me are all installed programes.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT I don't find a .scr folder. Is it safe to ad and configure it myself? If so, are the type and data settings cyfermaster provided all thats needed? Can you give me the steps needed? I'f never touched the registry before.

It's probably better not to fiddle with the registry if you're not familiar with it.
Have you tried adding it manually through the file associations menu under Explorer?

Tried in Folder options, file types. I added it but windows still needed to be tolled what application to use to run the file and the list of programs it gave me are all 3rd party programs.

Have you tried installing a new screensaver? Doing that should automatically assign the right program to the right file type.
I wouldn't work in the registry if you have not done so before.

The new screensaver works no problem, but I still cannot run screensavers manually. My system is starting to irritate me, I'm beginning to think of formating. Might be overkill though.
