With my job, I have to update to IE7. Every time I try to install, I get an error message during installation that says, "An error occurred while copying file FeedDisk.wav. Cannot copy file to desination directory." It will not let me install then. Has anyone heard of this or have any ideas?
Thanks, Shayne

Hi shayne,
sorry i have never encountered that problem, but i can give you some suggestions to try and fix it
1. Download the installer again (it could have been corrupted) 2. Re-install your operating system3 3. If all else fails your best bet is a re format
Alternatively you could just use Firefox which is far better than IE in any case

Surely there is something you can do before trying to do 2 and 3. I will have a think about it and reply later. 2 and 3 are last resorts.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to do 2 or 3. Firefox and Netscape won't work because most of my company info only works in IE7.
Thanks!!!

Have you got sufficient hard disk space?
Is the folder you are trying to install it to under your control, ie - are you the administrator of your computer, and do you have installation rights?
Then again, have you tried re-downloading the installer like Mr Magic suggested?

Mr. Magic always so quick to jump to the extreme options.
Well shane i would try downloading the installer again and doing all of the checks that Gitano suggested on permissions. Otherwise its the re-install route

Surely that isn't a problem shane! Everything in IE does work in Firefox, i swapped years ago and have never looked back

You are jumping to the same extreme option MM is.

Not exactly 100% correct Nukes. Some things can be designed specifically for one type of browser. Normally most websites are designed with multiple, if not all browsers in mind. You will find a lot of companies will design there intranet to work on IE only though.
I haven't had time to look into this issue as yet.
How are you running the install? Are you running it as an admin on the machine or a user that does not have admin rights? if the latter, then trying logging in as an admin to the machine, or simply choosing to run the install as an admin to the machine. To do this hold down shift and right click on the install file and choose Run As.

My vote also goes to a corrupted install file.
Confirm the checksum of the file and download again if it's incorrect.
Also make sure you have enough free space on the drive that hosts your temp directory. You may also want to try clearing it and doing the install again.

Also is your PC above minimum specs for IE7

which version of IE appears under your Add/Remove Programs? Try removing IE from there, and then installing it from your download.

When i installed IE 7 it checked for previous versions and updated the old IE 6, retaining all of my bookmarks, options etc. I still bet its a corrupted download

He has this same thread on another site (MS) and he says there that he downloaded it again. I just want to know if it is still saying IE6 is installed, or if it is thinking IE7 is now isntalled. Either way, he should remove it from Add/Remove Software, and then attempt to re-install it.

This is what I have tried that has not worked:
1) Moving download to trash bin and re-downloading
2) Going to add/remove programs. Any version of IE does not show up on the list. It is my understanding that IE will not show up in this list because it is so tied to the operating of XP that they will not allow it in the add/remove programs list.
3) Hold down shift key, right click, choose run as, log in as current user, but unchecking the protection box.

You still haven't answered if you are running the install as an admin to the local machine? Unless of course I missed it.

If nothing appears there, then in all likely hood you still running IE6. See if you what options you get under the Add/Remove Windows Components option under Add/Remove Programs.
Have you tried upgrading to IE7 while running Windows in Safe Mode?
shanewithay

There are no IE programs of any kind in my add/remove programs box.
I tried booting in safe mode with networking logged in as the administrator. I re-downloaded the file, and the same thing happened again.

Did you click the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left and check there? there should be an IE there, what options does it give you? What version are you currently using of IE. When IE is open click on Help and then select About Internet Explorer. If you run a search for FeedDisk.wav on your machine, does it find anything? If it does, try renaming, or deleting the file and running the install again.

This may be a daft question, but have you downloaded the correct version of IE for the OS you are using? What OS are you trying to install this on? Is it Windows XP? If yes, then do you have service pack 2 installed for Windows? How big is the download of IE7 that you have?

I am currently using IE6.0.2900. I have all of the updates because it does it automatically. I did a seach in the control panel for feeddisk.wav, and it said no file found. Since it says it has trouble copying it, I am assuming it is a file in the download. I tried going to the support site and doing the update there, where it chooses the correct update after it scans your computer, and the same thing happened again. When I click on the link with the error code, it gives me 0x7B. I searched for that code, and came up with nothing.
thanks again for your continued suggestions.
Can anyone tell me what this post means:
"My vote also goes to a corrupted install file.

Which version of windows are you using, and with what Service Pack?
I am using IE7 and I also ran a scan for the feeddisk.wav file, which was not found on my machine. You can ignore the corrupted install file comment since you have downloaded the file on numerous occassions.

He won't be on Vista (comes pre installed) Could be missing SP2 if he is on XP.
Otherwise you could try download any updates as a conflicting windows update could be causing this issuee

cyfer if you read his posts he's mentioned that he cannot see IE on the add remove browser...
that is normal... IE 6 would come with xp... but the option to uninstall it, is under the add remove windows component. If I remember correctly that option will only appear if you have SP2 installed...

Fishfly, if you read what I asked, you would see that I am asking him to click the Add/Remove Windows Components button to check there. Read the whole thread. haha. I am waiting for him to tell us what OS/SP config he is running.

Interesting tidbit. I tried to download SP2 because I wasn't entirely sure I had it. When the file was about half way through installing, I got the same error message as when I tried to install IE7, but the file it said it couldn't copy was xpinfbar.wav. I tried to email that file over from another computer and choose that file when it gave me the error, but that wouldn't work. After it aborted the install, a box came up that said, "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." It just find it strange that on both install attempts it couldn't copy a .wav file.

okay, so I am going to assume you are running windows XP.
I suggest you run a repair install of the OS (XP is nice and easy to do this), and then try and install SP 2 for XP if you don't have it, and then IE7.
You can check if you have SP2 for XP installed by doing the following:
1. Right-Click on My Computer. 2. Select Properties. 3. Select the General Tab (If it isn't selected by default). 4. Look under the System Heading. It will tell you here what SP you are running, if any.

DO I HAVE TO SEARCH AND LOOK FOR MY ORIGINAL CD'S TO DO THAT OR IS IT SOMETHING I CAN DOWNLOAD? I DON'T WANT TO ERASE ALL OF MY WORK ON A REPAIR INSTALL.

Reparing is not a reformat. it will fix your operating system without messing with your files
Yep you will need your original XP OS CD.
It is pretty easy, but if you have never done it before or not confident about doing so, ask someone more experienced. If it messes up, you could end up losing your work

Shane, are you working for yourself, or you do work for a company? If you work for a company, I suggest you get your IT department to do the repair. It is a simple process, but if you don't know what you are doing, you could mess it up AND LOSE EVERYTHING.
I strongly suggest you get your IT department, or someone that has done a repair install before to help you with this.

I am about at my whits end. I when to to the repair install and had to abort. My recover CD's that came with my Sony computer don't give me an option of a repair. It only gives me the option of format/reinstall (losing everythign).

Bump into your boss and make him accidentally spill coffee on the keyboard. Problem Solved.
Does the Sony site not have any sort of support? Is the computer under some sort of warranty, or could you possibly take it into them anyway?
Alternatively, hook it up to an external hard drive, copy across all of the files that you want (Im not sure if you could use the Files and settings transfer wizard seeing as though its a hard drive, not a machine, but might be worth a try for network configurations and wotnot), and format, reinstall start fresh.
I know formatting is a hassle, and is always a last resort, but Ive been following this thread, and it seems like everything has been exhausted, so cut your losses on time and patience.

Ask your IT department for the Original XP disc, not the recovery disc. The recovery disc won't offer you a repair option. You need the, or an original XP INSTALL disc. Actually, ask them to do the repair for you.
