Marijuana Dealers Offer Schwarzenegger One Billion Dollars
Posted in In the Trenches by David Guard on Mon, 08/06/2007 - 2:13pm
August 6 -- A coalition of California marijuana growers and dealers has offered Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger one billion dollars to solve the current state budget crisis. The group, calling itself Let Us Pay Taxes makes the offer through its web site LetUsPayTaxes.com. The offer comes at a time when the California legislature is deadlocked on a new budget and California has stopped issuing checks for vitally needed social services. Legislators are currently arguing over which programs will be cut in order to balance the budget.
“It is ridiculous that California can’t pay its bills,” said spokesman Clifford Schaffer. “It is a tragedy that they will cut badly needed services and programs such as medical care for the elderly and prison drug treatment when the money to fund all these programs and more is there and available. Everyone who is currently waiting for a check from the state should be enraged at this foolishness.”
Regulation and taxation of marijuana could produce six billion dollars in additional tax revenue, according to economic studies linked from their web site LetUsPayTaxes.com. In addition, it could save up to ten billion dollars in enforcement costs. “That is a conservative estimate,” said Schaffer. “By other estimates, the revenues could be five times that. The economists are with us all the way on this one. Marijuana prohibition is an economic disaster.”
in order for this to take off, legislation would need to be amended to accomodate this, which would then meanan etirely new market, a new product , a new income stream and a whole new world, as pointed out in the reasons I give over here
I dont wanna go into another debate about marijuana vs hardcore drugs
bottem line is that hemp is a miracle crop with or without the thc

Actually you are now comparing 3 levels of drugs and besides, we divide pharmaceuticals from S1-9, so why not have a similar set of divisions for drugs? Oh wait, we already do...

I know this is probably in Pauls quoted thread, but I have to ask...
What is the difference between alcohol and marijuana? I mean they are both mind altering, Im just asking which one is worse? I remember reading a post a long time ago about how alcohol has simply become socially acceptable, and if it had only been discovered at the same time as marijuana, it would also have been classified as a drug. Paul?

Not a bad plan. I would think that with the extra tax income from what's already in circulation, California would be much better off. Then after awile maybe all the states would pick up on it.

It would definately help outt he economy but there's no way legislation is going to let it pass.

Its stupid!
Whether it is bad or worse than booze or xyz, it is still a drug and should remain illegal no matter what

Nukes: is alcahol not a drug? Why is it still legal, and hemp isn't?

I'm all for alcohol being banned, far to many families are ruined because some dead beat father or mother cant do anything but blow their salary on booze.
OH BUT MODERATION IS THE KEY!?!?!?!
that sadly is also a load of crap, sure there are a few exceptions where people can have one or two drinks and behave responsibly, but far to many ppl get completely sh1tfaced and cannot control themselves.
I also have no time for someone that cannot enjoy themselves without getting pissed

I can't get pissed 2 sips and I'm down for the count
so banning booze, do it? don't do it? I don't really mind... but it's true why ban the one and yet not the other? I know! MONEY!

If they were to ban alcohol now we would experience the same effects that we did the last time they banned it. People would still make it and run it across the country illegally. Which would just increase the crime factor.

As per Gitano's point.
I think alcohol should be banned as well, my family are sworn off booze anyway. All mind altering drugs with serious detrimental effects on others should be banned.
I'm all for the snuffing out of ciggies for good as well

The more you tell people they can't do something or have something, the more they want it. Therefore, just legalize the crap.

i know that in switzerland they have centers were junkies can go and get clean needles. this is because they know people are going to do it regardless so they try and curb all the problems that come in with sharing needles.
as mentioned above, alcohol was banned in the states, during the 20's i think, and that didnt stop many people from getting their hands on it. hell, playboy was once illegal in south africa but that didnt stop the magazine from ciculating here.
there was a court case recently in the states recently for a guy who was in possesion of weed and based on the 3 strikes and you're out system he should've gone away for a good couple of years. this however was not the case as a member on the jury decided to do something that most don't realise you can do - judge the law and not the crime. based on that he managed to convince his fellow jurors that it is an archaic law by using their habbits as examples. another member enjoyed to play golf, he asked how he would feel if that was made illegal and so on.
the guy was not dealing and doing no "damage" to anyone but himself, so why put him in jail for it.

Go moo!
Nukes: so you want alcohol banned SIMPLY because it wouldn't affect you or your family? Thats a slightly selfish view to take is it not? Oh hey, I don't use air conditioning, its not an issue for me at all, LETS BAN THAT, it doesn't affect me in anyway, and its unnatural, so how do you feel now nukes?
Don't even get me started on cigarettes, it wont be pretty. And I dont even smoke, so just dont nukes.

You misunderstood me. I would want alcohol banned because it is a mind altering drug which has serious effects on society etc. i don't feel too strongly cause it will not really effect me.
And for the fags, try me

Ha, lets not go there.
But you arent considering what making something like alcohol illegal would do. Like Moo said, it would just encourage more crime, because you will never stop people doing it!
Just like marijuana, at the moment people are breaking the law, and NOT paying taxes. Make it legal, people aren't breaking the law for someone so (relatively) minor, they PAY taxes to the state, AND the police have time to take care of real crimes that matter like RAPE annd MURDER.
hunter
Sep 12 2007, 07:32 AM
It all depends on how you define "crime that matters". getting pissed, crashing yr car and taking someone else out is serious, and if not for the alcohol could have been prevented. Even getting pissed and crashing and killing only yourself has an impact on society.
Has alcohol/drugs been a factor in many rapes/murders? I'd say yes...
Has alcohol/drugs been a factor in many assaults? I'd say yes...
No banning it will not stop these crimes, and yes banning it will never happen. Personally I just dont have the time for people that have to overindulge just to have fun.

Sep 12 2007, 07:34 AM
That's exaclty what I was saying. The more you tell people they can't have something, the more they want it. If you leagalize it, then you reduce the problems (even if only a little) and the police can focus on other crimes that are happening. But then again it's such a simple solution that the government can't see why it should be put into place.

Yeah but hunter even if you dont have time for those kinds of people, doesn't mean they are just going to go away! There will always be people that rely on substance abuse to have a good time, and create bad times for others!
Hell, there are millions of people who cause shit for others without substance abuse!

Substance abuse does increase crime though

I do not smoke weed, but I would actually think that it can be legalised. In a more controlled way than cigarettes, smoking only in your own home. People who are high on weed are generally less disruptive than drunk people.
But now other issues come in. It would be very irresponsible to let kids live with stoners. (Yes, I know that that happens now, but at least its still illegal) The big thing about weed is that it affects the mind, and over-use in the teenage years (and probably earlier) is bad for a childs mental and emotional development.
