okay - so much for the brains of the audio setup - now lets look at what im going to use as the heart of the setup ........ cue one JBL GTO755.6 amplifier - the amp is a monster which produces 60x4 plus 107x2 watts RMS into 4 ohms but thats not how im going to use it since thats too many lower powered channels - im going to bridge it into 160 watts RMS x 2 for the front speakers and into 300 watts RMS x 1 for the subwoofer - this should give me a lot of headroom for the speakers to work and heres an older piccie of the amp in my old install

now all of these things described so far i already had so what did i now buy - well as time goes on speakers get damaged as you crank up the volume on your sound system so i definitely needed a new set of speakers - i couldnt afford the speakers that i really wanted ie a set of DLS iridium three way speakers so i opted for a compromise and got something cheaper but not too far away from those in terms of quality but these are still temporarily a compromise and in the long run i will probably upgrade to the DLS speakers later
in the meantime the MB Quart reference series RVF216 two way set will have to do - note that these were not cheap by any means at R3k but the DLS are around twice that so there wasnt much hope of me getting the items i really wanted since the car was paid cash upfront and im a bit broke for the moment considering the other expenditure im gonna have at home - but im digressing - back to the piccies

now within the box you see above you will find the following speakers a small but hopefully effective tweeter as pictured here

and then a midrange driver as pictured here

the midrange is going into the stock locations and ill probably have to build spacers to make those fit - so ill also try and face them upward to help in stereo imaging and soundstaging - the tweeter is going to go into custom built pods at the base of the A-Pillar - this is to give the stereo image some height - normally you want the mids and tweeters as close as possible but due to the designs of vehicles nowadays that is difficult and thats why i wanted the three way setup - this compromise will just have to do for now but ive heard some setups configured like this that sounded decent enough so im hoping mine can emulate those with a little bit of creative positioning on my part ie pointing the speakers properly to and measuring distances to be as close together as possible ........ this means that the distance between the left mid to my left ear has to match the distance between the left tweeter and my left ear so those sounds arrive at the same times and thus should be more or less in phase and project a nice three dimensional soundstage
now some people will argue that the speakers on the right will be louder than the speakers on the left which is natural since those are closer to your listening position - and normally you need time alignment to compensate for this ..... since i dont have the luxury of this processing im going to rely on the gains on the amp for left and right being set differently - by manipulating the amplitude on one side you can shift the center image which is what im planning on doing

- if you dont understand some of what ive said dont worry- i have difficulties in understanding it myself J/K LOL
so far ive covered my front stage - for rear fill im going to use the front speakers from the polo and move those to the rear - and im going to power those directly from the headunit - rear fill for me is normally faded out and is only activated when i have rear seat passengers - so those guys dont need the best sound that money can buy since im paying for it all i deserve the best that the sysem can offer so this setup is going to be extremely driver-centric
whoops - i almost forgot the items which will be doing the processing duties for the speakers - the Quarts come with a nice little chrome box which is the passive crossover for the set - this thing has 4 tweeter level adjustments and heres the piccie
chrome in the front - its far shinier than this pic shows and the sides arent blue but black

and clear on the other side

so you can see the high quality components that have been used for this crossover filter - i have to display this thing somhow or the other - so ill have to make a plan on how this can be done
now the thing that concerns most people is bass - but for me the bass is essential but i dont want enoughto knock me into another time zone - i need to have something which makes bass guitars sound like bas guitars and kick drums must sound like kick drums and both musnt gel together into a big raspy droning effect of mush but at volume levels that also turn your brain into pulp
i could have gotten a nice high quality 12 inch sub - but most of those are expensive and need loads of amplifier power - so instead i opted for a lower rated but larger sub which should give me deep bass extension within a nicely sized box which only needs the 300 watts RMS that my amp provides on the sub channel
enter the JBL 1502d subwoofer - this thing has dual 2ohm voice coils which im going to run in series to give me a final impedance of 4 ohms and it requires ......... drumrolls please ..... exactly 300 watts RMS to run it - so within this huge heavy box here

this is what you will find when you open it

the cone looks like such

and remember that this sub is a bit of a shallow mount subwoofer which means that it doesnt really require much depth to make it fit - so the enclosure can be wider but shallower which leaves a bit of boot space (not essential but helpful now and then for small items to be carried)

will keep on updating as i continue the progress on the project - really hope it sound as good as i want it to - but im sure it will also take around a month or two of playing to run-in and be sounding at its best
