I've slapped up this poll based on the recent discussion about censorship.
Opinions?
Thanks for the poll RustPuppet, it gives me food for thought, and I did vote NO, because I believe in freedom of speach, I don't think people should feel unneccessarily stifled and should feel free to say what they like, yadda yadda...
Buuut, that being said...
Topics like these always remind me of that CJ Langehoven quote:
Om te luister na 'n gesprek wat vol vloekwoorde is, is net soos om te kou aan 'n mondvol koring wat vol klippe is.
"Listening to a conversation laced with swear words is like chewing on a mouthfull of wheat filled with stones."
I am also old-fashioned and find myself more offended and shocked by girls swearing. F#@k, I really need to stop swearing...
I am ashamed to admit that I swear more now than I ever did in my life, something I ascribe to living in New York City, where swearing is done in such a casual manner that it is considered normal everyday language and my friends laugh at me when I apologize for swearing and say stuff like, "hey, I would not trust you if you did NOT swear!"
So thanks, RP for the reminder, it really can be quite terrible to swear and I think sometimes in writing it's even worse, because it's right there in black and white for everyone to see forever and ever.
At the same time, I am not offended by swear words too much, it's almost like I don't see them any more, and perhaps that is a bad thing. I have found myself using Afrikaans swear words I would NEVER use in South Africa, just because I know no-one can understand me!
So maybe we can swear in Klingon or something? Would that be less offensive?
