I've slapped up this poll based on the recent discussion about censorship.

Opinions?
Valheru
No censorship, but we might look at curbing excessive swearing
RenegadeNukes
I vote no to censorship.

Freedom of speech should be allowed on this forum - this is what forums are for: to share ones views with the communtiy

However excess foul language and swearing to the very excess should be curbed, and the offender should be warned /had a word with etc.

I think ian sohuld bring back the filter smile.gif

I do not recall there ever being an instance of excessive swearing. The forum is moderated so if it occurred then I am sure the member would be asked to tone it down a little.

I can express feelings without swearing. I will censor certain things in the SB, because it is the first thing that people can see when logging onto the site.

Agreed. Cyfer thanks for your incentive, i'm sure that will appease all sides of the debate

My views...

If you don't like what you see - don't read it...

Say No to Vault9 Censorship!
RustPuppet
Seems the results speak for themselves.

Fuck yeah.
FatBoy
Fuck yeah!

No to be honest I have never seen excessive swearing on this site, as a matter of fact, the thread about cencorship has the most swearwords in it as far as I know
CyberStorm
You are so fuckin right FatBoy! v.gif
W@RP@T}{
All this swearing :o

Can we censor this topic HAHAHAHAHAHA
Mr. Magic Matrix
Not very admirable your conduct in this forum guys

I say no to shoutbox censorship.. but excess swearing whouldn't be tolerated as it is really not nessacary

You guys swearing in every post here, shows yur lack of maturity on this issue as you are openly mocking a topic that can affect many people and has already been brought up before
RenegadeNukes
You are treading on Dangerous soil CAB for saying that

However i don't feel as strongly as CAB on this matter - but i think we should treat it with a bit more seriousness than what we are doing at present
cyfermaster
CaB, what you got to understand about the replies above is they are mocking the whole concept of it. i.e. They are not for censorship, and thus make a mockery of it by using pointless swearing. Yes I think it is pointless, but they are trying to make it humerous. smile.gif Maybe they are failing at it. The whole reason they are doing this is because the lady who started the original thread about censorship has never returned, or even sent me a PM with regards to her original post. i.e. She didn't really care for it.
Gitano
I'm with Cyfer about the shoutbox, but other than that, as it has always been, I think it should be up to the moderators discretion regarding excessive swearing etc. I mean, isn't that why we are here in the first place? To keep the content acceptable?
Dr.Death
I really dont care, i have never seen excessive swearing here anyway
Gitano
Good man. Thats because WE do our job tongue.gif
CyberStorm
Great...now we can finally let this thread die!!

Screw the censorship idea. I agree that swearing should be moderated in the SB, but for all the mommas and pappas complaining about the swearing on the site, has it ever occurred to you that your innocent little kiddies are prolly exposed to even more swear words at school, and the likes?

That is a very valid point, but i think that forums like V9 should set a good example and curb excessive swearing.

I mean how many times do you actually really need to swear on the sb
alexecon
I guess one point that could be made would also pertain to the context of the conversation. In some circumstances, swearing may be a much easier way of portraying a situation, whereas others may not warrant the use of swearing. For instance, would you really want to keep the language clean when describing how an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend screwed you over and left you with a few thousand in debt? conversely, wouldn't it be best to keep the swearing down in postings regarding personal beliefs and differing opinions?

perhaps, it may be best to trust the judgement of the individual that is posting and edit where there may be a need for it.

in layman's terms F#@K that, just don't be morons biggrin.gif . Thank you very much.

Thanks for the poll RustPuppet, it gives me food for thought, and I did vote NO, because I believe in freedom of speach, I don't think people should feel unneccessarily stifled and should feel free to say what they like, yadda yadda...

Buuut, that being said...

Topics like these always remind me of that CJ Langehoven quote:

Om te luister na 'n gesprek wat vol vloekwoorde is, is net soos om te kou aan 'n mondvol koring wat vol klippe is.

"Listening to a conversation laced with swear words is like chewing on a mouthfull of wheat filled with stones."

I am also old-fashioned and find myself more offended and shocked by girls swearing. F#@k, I really need to stop swearing...

I am ashamed to admit that I swear more now than I ever did in my life, something I ascribe to living in New York City, where swearing is done in such a casual manner that it is considered normal everyday language and my friends laugh at me when I apologize for swearing and say stuff like, "hey, I would not trust you if you did NOT swear!"

So thanks, RP for the reminder, it really can be quite terrible to swear and I think sometimes in writing it's even worse, because it's right there in black and white for everyone to see forever and ever.

At the same time, I am not offended by swear words too much, it's almost like I don't see them any more, and perhaps that is a bad thing. I have found myself using Afrikaans swear words I would NEVER use in South Africa, just because I know no-one can understand me!

So maybe we can swear in Klingon or something? Would that be less offensive? http://www.kli.org/

Heir_of_Isildur
LOL... in that case if you don't like swearing: "Sujatlh 'e' yImev" (not enough Klingon swearing sad.gif )
Surge
Man, I gotta say that Afrikaans is the BEST language for swearing and dishing out insults. smile.gif
Gitano
You've obviously never heard Farsi biggrin.gif
Surge
Yes I have, but still prefer Afrikaans.
Gitano
Oh well tongue.gif
RustPuppet
Right, well after a few months the votes clearly speak for themselves: swearing FTW (and at 6 to 1 too) biggrin.gif

Thanks for the input guys. I'm closing the thread since it's served its purpose, if there are any queries please PM me.
