The average international price for a Fiber-To-The-Premise (FTTX) connection is far cheaper than Telkom’s lowest priced ADSL offering. This is according to new research released by research firm Point-Topic.
These FTTX connections included in this survey have speeds of between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps, but there are a few that start at 2 or 3 Mbps. Some FTTX connections include IP based television services in the price.
Locally, Telkom’s DSL384 is the lowest priced ADSL offering on the market. This offering has a maximum speed of 384 Kbps and carries a monthly usage limit of 2 GB, the total cost for this service is R 544-00 per month, nearly three times the cost of a Fiber-To-Home connection internationally.
When looking at Telkom’s 4 Mbps ADSL service with a 4 GB unshaped account, suitable for online gaming and other latency sensate applications, the price escalates to R 1295-00, assuming that one purchases all the components from Telkom.
FTTX gaining in popularity
In countries leading the broadband race like Japan and Korea the total number of ADSL subscriptions are continuing to decline as more users upgrade to fibre-based connections.
This in effect means that South Africa is now two ‘technology generations’ – i.e. ADSL2+ and Fiber’ - behind these nations which can make it difficult for local Internet entrepreneurs and developers to compete with their international counterparts.
