Hi bud - got those pics you wanted uploaded - gonna make a thread about this in case anyone else wants tips on how to go about installing a system in a Golf Mk1

the main pic in terms of how i mounted the sideboxes would be this one

if you look at the wheel arch and then see that the fender forms a ridge from the fender to being inline with the wheel arch - the side box was calculated to have the side wall resting on that ridge - and then the amp rack between both sideboxes keeps it in place as well as the weight of the subbox - thus the panels dont need to be mounted - you can just see the edge of the amp rack thats around 5 cms away from the wheel arch - so that the side box rests on the wheel arch further back and toward that ridge further forward - but the main support does come from the wheel arch actually

heres all the pics i took following this one - hope they will give you some idea about the install

the head unit - and alpine 9827 mp3 player - i love alpine and its basically a great sounding headunit - the other headunit i wouldnt mind having is pioneer - the others that i like wouldnt be available here like eclipse etc

then onto the midrange drivers for the front set of splits - these are mounted on the doors and i have thinned down the window winders since the speaker will get in the way of those winders as you bring down the window - was going to put in electric windows - but was too lazy - and this install was done around two years back anyway - and now im gonna get a new car soon

the tweeters were mounted up on top of the dash as can be seen here

these were then toed in to a suitable angle to provide a wide soundstage - they are mounted on a bracket made from chipboard ie two triangular pieces stuck together and then covered in vinyl and stuck to the dashboard with two way tape

now onto the back - when you open up the rear hatch here is the sight that greets you

heres a closeup of the logo on the parcel shelf

the parcel shelf is made of chipboard and the logo was cutout of masoniote - then stuck onto the board - thereafter the vinyl was glued and applied onto the board then you heat the area around the logo with a heat gun (kind of like a hair dryer) and if its very sensitive vinyl you actually use a hairdryer to avoid making holes in it - this bit was covered with a carbon fibre type of vinyl - not the shiny one with the effect painted on - but thick leather like stuff with breathing holes actually woven in

the sub box holds a pair of JL audio 12W1 subwoofers - these are the bottom of the range -but are great for sound quality and used to cost around R3000 each back in the day - off course nowadays you can get better for less

heres a pic that was taken with a better camera previously

naughty
okay - with that out of the way we can move onto the side boxes - now you can see the side boxes and how the sub box and amp rack hold those into place to the side of the car

starting with the amp rack

now the one bit missing here is this

this panel hides the wiring inside the amp rack and makes it neat - i still have run it back into the system since i rebuilt after my back smash around a year back - thats how long i havent reinstalled this panel tongue.gif but hey it still plays the tunes right tongue.gif

heres the right hand sidebox

thats also got a small panel missing - thats just got to be glued on - something that will take 2 minutes - but im gonna have to open a huge glue just for this - so im waiting till i have to open the glue for something else then ill just slip this small task in tongue.gif

you can see the passive crossovers in the display chamber covered with perspex - these are to crossover the rear splits ie split the treble to the tweeters and midrange to the mid drivers - and those mids and tweeters are situated ont he top of the side boxes as you can see above

the left hand side box

holds some pretty gold plated fuseboxes - and the other side of the rear speaker set - these are in the sideboxes so they are in their own chamber and isolated from the bass emanating from the subwoofer - some guys put 6x9 speakers onto the parcel shelf - but those get affected by sub bass and are also too loud - these speakers are here only for rear fill and i normally fade them out when listening when im alone in the car - when passengers jump in i fade those back in

better pic of those fuseboxes smile.gif

now heres what splits the treble and bass signals for the front stage - and active crossover - and its inside one of the sideboxes and hidden from plain view

with all of this equipment there you will be wondering how i get to my spare wheel - well its simple - i just need to drop the rear seats and then push the sub box onto the seat like so

this then reveals that the box does not go all the way down but is sitting on a set of mount inserts on the sidebox - heres a pic

now i just lift the amprack onto those inserts like so

and that leaves a big enough gap to simply lift the carpet up toward the rear and voila under the carpet the spare wheel resides in its usual spot and can lift out easily from the gap - whole process takes two minutes tops if that long tongue.gif

sorry for the phonecam pics - but they give you an idea of how it all fits together - any more questions or comments - please feel free to post

also apologies - i hadnt washed the car for a while and its looking a bit shabby in the pics - but im not after winning any beauty contests - and the great sound is what im after

any questions - fire away

btw i think that scott was also interested in the system since he also has a golf 1 - so heres a few pics to whet your appetite

so guys enjoy - ps this car is gonna be sold soon - wait for the new car and system

WOW that is surely a HUGE mofo of a sound system...

Thanks Naughty! Thats incredible, should be a whole lot of help when I start with the sound!

Cheers biggrin.gif

shot guys - ive been enjoying it for the last two or three years and as ive said a more modern system will definitely find its way into the new car that i will be getting this year - maybe a golf 5 gti DSG if things go according to plan
Paul

Very nice install.

Nice equipment too, those JL's are awesome, have the dual 10" 10W3 as far as I can remember and it sounds awesome.

What's with the Jensen though? it's like mixing Phoenix gold with starsound tongue.gif

Maybe it is just the covers to throw robbers off. smile.gif "Oh, this dude has Jensens. Don't bother with this one."
W@RP@T}{

dude - out of all the guys who know about audio which one of them would bother with rear fill tongue.gif - those jensens are in the rear - they are off most of the time - i use the fader on the headunit to fade to the front and those go off - theres nothing connected to my rear pre-outs - the front stage is actually being controlled with a 3 way active crossover - so if you are using passives on yours it still wont be beating mine by a huge margin (though since dynaudios are way better than what im using in the front they will definitely sound better) - but not so you would notice with good recordings

anyways wait for my next setup - this one is three years old - comparing your system to mine is like comparing my grandfather to the last gold medal winner at the olympics for a 100m dash - when i get the new car we can compare e-penis's again tongue.gif
W@RP@T}{
LOL Naughty, it was tongue and cheek tongue.gif

Agreed on the rear fill although I do like a little bit of sound to come from the rear to give depth. Your setup is quite mean, very nice stuff there but what I was saying primarily was that the Jensens are a little out of place

JL Audio - High class stuff
Alpine - High class stuff
JBL - decent stuff

Jensen - low end

was just saying it seemed out of place biggrin.gif

No doubt it sounds awesome!!!!

I went with the Dynaudio simply for sound quality.

yeah - i know - check the smiley in my reply tongue.gif

On a side note and a little bit of useless information....

I had a kenwood PS-909R I think it was, no internal amp just 8V preouts, was the nicest sounding deck i've ever had!!!! and i've had allot of different decks smile.gif
cyfermaster
I remember that one. It was a stunner. You were a moron for letting that one go. sad.gif
W@RP@T}{
Gave it away with my Audi cause I was too lazy to get the original one installed again sad.gif

I'm such a tonsil sometimes
