Hi guys I need some help... as you all know Valentines Day is just around the corner... I need some help, I would like to spoil the gf - not just going to a nice dinner etc. I would like to do something Romantic for my gf - but maybe it's it a guy thing I'm a romanse n00b

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to spoil your better half?

Whatever you do, it must be something out of the ordinary. If she is used to be being taken out to fancy restaurants, take her for a picnic at a secluded spot.

The suprise should be big, the best things to do is things she would never expect of you.

Seriously though, you need to do something she isn't expecting. Maybe even cook her dinner and setup a nice candle lit table in your lounge there at home. Don't let her do anything.

I am also in the same boat. I will most probably be out of my skull somewhere, but seeing as the love birds will all descend on restaurants/bars/etc, i think i will get smashed by myself at home

You could rock up at her work with a FAT bunch of flowers, just before she takes her lunch hour and then take her out for a nice lunch. In front of all of her coworkers would be great

what about a book of memories? buy some of that fancy paper.. write down 10 special memories and include pics if you have... and that could be the 10 most special memories that you had with her and you can say that hopefully this valentine's day, your experience with her on that day, adds to your bank of wonderful memories with her...

or buy a photo album and fill it with the best photos you have of the 2 of you

My brother made a small drawer set for his girlfriend for her birthday. I might do something very similar for someone.

JuCa, while I do agree with you in part of what you say. it is always nice to go that extra mile on that special day. I mean you don't even have to particpate corporately. i.e. You don't have to buy a card, or go to a restaurant or buy her a gift with a heart on it. You can always make her a card (which I will do), make her dinner and make her a gift, or buy her something that she has wanted for a long time that isn't even related to Valentines.

I posted a reply to your previous post, but the net was fuggered over here, but you said what I said - it is corporate bull. It's just a way for the companies to recover some cash from the broke-ass month of January.

Who gives a shit if its corporate bullshit? Why not just take the opportunity to do something special for your girlfriend, or are you both just bitter because you are alone?

I mean what does it take, just a small something to make them know that they are special, thats all, nothing to do with this corporate bullshit as you call it.

I am not alone. Why do people focus so much on V-Day in any case, as a day to spoil your significant other? Why can't people at random make him/her feel special, and not just do it because tradition/whatever says that you should do it on a specific day?

V-Day this year will be on a Wednesday - a working day. I reckon that one could have a MUCH better time with her over the weekend - a more relaxed feel and such, if u get what i mean, instead of the hustle-and-bustle of the average working day ('specially in JHB :P).

The Sadist, my works most weekends, and sometimes isn't lus to go out. It also makes it hard to do anything during the day, as she is working. So having a set day, is kinda a good thing as she will look forward to doing something on that night. There is no reason why anybody couldn't still plan to do their valentines thing on the weekend. They just might get into the spirit of things because of the corporate advertising etc...

Anyways, there is no right, or wrong view on this issue IMO.

Quick question: Do you have the same feelings towards christmas? hmm... Why buy anyone presents? Why for that 1 day of the year should you buy all those close to you presents?

I'm not disputing making someone know how special you are to them, but the issue is that these things are too commercial as well, which imo, makes them not as special as they are made out to be.

But on a serious note, Christmas has also become more about the gifts, and less about the Lord - I think a thread I created last year might have had these thoughts as well.

I spoil the GF for her b-day's and BIG time... I spoil the gf on xmas day... I spoil the gf almost all the time... ok maybe not almost but sometimes

I have nothing against the more personal Valentines thing etc, each to his own after all. It is just funny to see people do the extra mile and then forget all that loving almost instantly to get into stupid fights and cheating etc etc

For valentines day last year I did.....A GRAND NOTHING!

I went to work that day and then onto gym in the evening, by the time I got home I was exhausted!

I had a bath, sent my gf an sms and went to bed!

Needless to sat my ex-gf was pissed! She went ballistic on me, even accusing me of cheatin on her!
I dont think I've ever seen her more pissed!
Boy did I get it that day!!!

She never let me forget how angry she was that day! She always used it as ammo when a dispute arose in future!

My ex-girlfriend used to catch the bus to school, so I decided that I would go pick her up that day, and it doesn't sound like much but she likes a fecking long way from school and I live right next to where we used to go, so I had to wake up moerse early. So I rock up with flowers chocolates + stuffed toy, you know the regular stuff, she walks outside on her way to the bus, sees me, freaks out, cries, I love you's, I mean I was god for the moment.

We get to school, suddenly I have every chick in like a kilometer radius telling me how Im such an amazing boyfriend and that I'm so sweet, and some teachers even came up to me and said so.

Now, later on that day, they had like a secret Santa thing for V day, like anonymous valentines, Im sure you are all familiar with them.

I didn't get her one, because I thought Why? I have done something better! I was wrong.
When they were all handed out and she was empty handed, man did I get into kak. Shouting, screaming, crying, stomping, door slamming kak.

I was like WTF..... All my friends were in total shock......

After doing nothing with my ex-gf during V day last year, I tried to get myself out of jail by saying.

- that valentines day is just a commercial gimmick,
- that I didnt need a specific day to show her I cared for her!
- that I cared for her every single day.

I had to work overtime on regular days just to try and make up for my valentines mistake.
I was extra caring and went above and beyond the call of duty, even spending hours with her on works nights and getting home in the early hours of the morning.

She was sort of buying it but, the rage that burnt inside her overwhelmed her sense of reasoning and I got kak'ed out again! :

I broke up her in September 2006 and she reminded me of my valentines mishap right till the very end!!!

I understand women till that time of the month... then I just and either get kaked on or ignore everything they say

What made things worse was that my best friend in the whole world is a girl. We have never been together like that or anything, it just seemed to piss this chick off sooooo much.
