Well, I am not all that big into the Dakar, but I do pay a little attention to it. Firstly sad to hear there has been a death already in this years Dakar (Was a SA guy).

Can a S.A. person finally win the Dakar. There was that bike rider, can't remember his name right now, that was close on a few occasions. Now this year, it looks like Gineil de Villiers could do it. He is currently leading (the car section), but a lot can happen. Hopefully he can do it. biggrin.gif
Paul
It would definely be one for the books if he does. GO BOERSEUN GO!
cyfermaster
Well he is now 31 minutes ahead. Also he has done well in this previously.

South African Giniel De Villiers stretched his overall lead in the Dakar Rally on Sunday after Volkswagen team mate Carlos Sainz was slowed by power steering problems.

De Villiers, last year's runner-up, won the eighth 589km stage between Atar and Tichit in Mauritania to lead Mitsubishi's former winner Stephane Peterhansel of France by 31 minutes and 13 seconds.

Go BOERSEUN indeed.

I think the last dude to come second was Alfie Cox on a bike, then he switched to a car, and I haven't seen him since sad.gif

Good luck to this guy!
cyfermaster
Alfie Cox. That is the dude I was referring to, but couldn't remember his name. I think he did the cars once, and is no longer involved in the Dakar.
Gitano
Not at all? I knew he was getting a little old, but he looked like such a petrol head I thought he would never give up!

Anyway, how are things looking for our dude now?

Not looking good at all i r n00b2. crying.gif

After a malfunction of the turbo set the engine of his car on fire at the 129 km mark on Monday, overall Dakar Rally leader Giniel de Villiers was stranded at the foot of the Elephants' Rock and waiting for his assistance team.

Earlier in the event, De Villiers' Volkswagen teammate, Ari Vatanen, saw his Volkswagen Touareg reduced to a pile of ash after it was gutted by fire.

Volkswagen's other driver Carlos Sainz had to stop for a few minutes on the side of the track for an unknown reason at km 130, before continuing on this ninth special stage.

That is the second Toureg to go into flames. Something is wrong with that car. sad.gif
fx
It certainly would seem so, up in flames like his chances dry.gif
cyfermaster
Sadly yes that is the case. He was looking so good. sad.gif Maybe next year he will win it, but what a long time to wait to see. sad.gif

cyfermaster
I wouldn't blame him if that is what he actually did. I would do it if I was really needing to. smile.gif
Gitano

cyfermaster
