Madrid - Former England captain David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and sign a five-year deal for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, he told Reuters on Thursday.

The 31-year-old, who joined Real from Manchester United in June 2003, is the most famous player to sign up for Major League Soccer since it began in 1996.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons," Beckham told Reuters.

"After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."

Text of David Beckham's statement announcing his move from Real Madrid to the Los Angeles Galaxy: This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons. After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.

I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make. I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans.

I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own. For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100 percent to my coach, teammates and fans as I believe Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve.

I cant say i care, just thought someone else might be interested tongue.gif The only thing i wonder is for how much he is moving...
cyfermaster
Don't really care either. It will be plenty moolah though. They used to have a salary cap there, but I think that is out the window now.
docmoo
$250million for 5 years as well as $1million/week in advertising. it's reported to be the biggest deal ever

i hate him now sad.gif
CrEaTi0n
holy shit thats alot of money sad.gif

I really hate him sad.gif
millennia
Good for him...

At least MLS should get some airtime now aswell.
CyberStorm
Beckham really knows how to milk it, doesnt he?

Even though his footballing skills are over-rated he definitely knows how to get a good deal!

He gave up playing in the most competitive league in Europe.
He will no longer play in the world's greatest club championship!

This isn't about growing the game in the US, its about growing Beckhams already huge bank balance!!

Bollocks, Beck's is the most recognisable face in football in the world at this moment in time. Wherever he goes, ppl will want to see.

By default the MLS is going to receive a mojor injection of funds from international companies wanting viewing rights.

Think about it, 4 years ago the possibility of watching a Primera Liga match on the box was pretty much zip. Now, they have a good couple of matches (albeit delayed) on every weekend.

The MLS can now look forward to huge publicity, which of course will grow the sport in the US!

I am talking Beckhams point of view here: To him its all about the dead presidents!!

As far as I'm concerned, Becks is milking a cash cow and he has every right to.

If the yanks are willing to dish out that much cash to an aging and very over-rated player, then so be it!!

Victoria and Becks will be smiling all the way to the bank!!!!

Fishfly
I say great for David Beckham... the US willing to fork out for a crap player with sagging looks then great if it was me I would also milk them for all their worth devil2.gif

The only skill Beckham has is how to kick a ball in a "dead ball" situation rather pointless to watch how he plays as he no longer adds value to the team.

cyfermaster
The reason he doesn't add value, could be because he doesn't get much game time now. Just remember he has an academy in the US also, so he has an interest there.
Shi-shi
he should move into my house.... we can play 'soccer' all the time.. he he he devil.gif
millennia
what about Victoria then Shi-shi? You wanna play soccer with her too? tongue.gif
cyfermaster
She can send Victoria to me. bleh.gif
Shi-shi
who said anything about victoria? she can stay where she is and david can move in here.. see problem solved!
cyfermaster
Where you the person he was sending those sms's to? ermm.gif
Gitano
I don't want a million dollars a week, I want $5 million, period.
With that, I could live for the rest of my life fecking comfortably.
I don't even know what I would do with a million a week.
cyfermaster
You live by what you earn....
Gitano
You telling me that he SPENDS a million a week?

Someone needs to be shot...
millennia
You? For not playing sports well enough at school tongue.gif
Gitano
I cant be blamed!!!

I blame Rush for creating v9 to distract me!

RenegadeNukes
$1 million a week to kick a football around

WTF does he do with so much money, it must be falling from the sky for him

Ouch...

That must have left a mark.

Fishfly
Strech marks?

Personally the guys bitching about him earning 1mill per week must be jealous... we all are sad.gif unfortunately he's earning that much kudos to him... pity I wasn't a natural born footballer sad.gif

Dude, you are clueless. In his prime Beckham was one of the best in the world. Sure he has lost some of his speed but he is still a better than average player.

Lemme guess you hate Man U or England right? biggrin.gif

Actually, I don't hate Man Utd or England.

Just dont ask me to buy into David Beckham - I never have and never will! People now talk of how Beckham has "slipped"! I think he hasn't slipped at all, he was just never that good to begin with!!

Throw in some swerving free kicks and a few corners here, a good pass there, and the fact the he played for the world's most famous club in the world, its not that hard to see why the the Beckham legacy began!!

Say what you like, but his recent benchwarming status at Real Madrid speaks volumes!
Becks was and is an attacking player who lacks real pace, is incapable of taking on defenders, who rarely scores goals from the run of play and often struggles when given acres of space!

I'll pick Beckham's replacement, Ronaldo over him anyday of the week!!

Remember, manchester united legend George Best once famously said "He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that, he's all right!

He was referring to your beloved Beckham of course!!
hunter
Beloved? Def not I cant stand the ponce or the teams he plays for, I do however think he was a pretty awesome player in his prime.

Like most "superstars" people love to see him fail I guess.
CyberStorm
Only joking about the beloved part. tongue.gif

as a Man Utd fan boi - I have to AGREE 100% with you there, David Beckham only had 1 thing... his crosses and dead ball situation... anything else he was useless in! Ronaldo is 100% better replacement than Beckham ever was/will be!

as for me being a footballer - it had nothing to do with Beckham I just wished I earned 1mill a week too!
millennia
So his ability to drag a team back into a game is buggerall.

oh yeah, the coach hates him so very likely he'll be on the bench. Nice of backham make him eat his words though by getting a recall back into the team before he got injured...

oh, thanks for clearing that up for me. biggrin.gif Well then Shi-shi, there may be some hope for you yet.
RenegadeNukes
