Can I please ask that anyone using foul and bad language in the shout box be given a warning or barred from the site as I find this offensive.
There are a lot of younger users use this site as do my children and I feel this is not appropriate language for them to see.
Many thanks

Hi Laurie,
I will keep an eye on this. Could you please elaborate a bit on the foul language? Is it just swear words, or are there other words you are also referring to?

Yeah its not hard to substitute a word for @#$%, I #%@#$@ agree with you Laurie that #$@ %$^&^ @!@ swear words should be limited.

I'm normally very against censorship, but in the case of the shoutbox I'm afraid that I'm all for this one.
I'm sure it would be possible to filter the words so that they are automatically changed to something else, and if it is discovered that a member persists we could have a quiet word with them.

Who might your children be Laurie?
I know that the regular users of the shoutbox are not youngsters, but if you want us to protect your kids, some of the older members would be glad to take them under their wing as this is a community site. Or rather, we strive to be. It's such a pity that we have users who use this site purely for the arcade and not actually contribute in the way of making posts and getting involved.
There are even some members who fall into that category and even have the cheek to demand from us to run this site according to their wishes when they don't contribute.

Or the fact that you must be 13 or older to use the forum should be HIGHLIGHTED
If yr 13 and u havent heard a "bad word" yet then yr living far to sheltered a life.
Say no to Shoutbox Censorship!

I think you guys are being a bit too hostile to Laurie, she was just making a request not a demand

I'm personally against censorship on forums, but i think that it shouldn't be taken to excess. Perhaps if someone put swear words into every other post or something on the lines of that - then they should be warned etc,
Otherwise the odd swear word won't do too much harm

I think everyone has their own opinion and the right to broadcast it openly. If you dont like the swearing then ignore it or dont visit again.

I think that the hostile response is why Laurie has not returned to V9 ever again (and is not likely to)
I really believe that you guys (Paul mainly) have to soften up, so that when members make a request they are not scared away by the replies
EG: When CrashandBurn wanted to show some of his smilies he was met with a huge hostile backlash about y they didn'ty want to see them etc.
We need to soften up so that we can keep members in
As members make a forum

personally I think foul language is rather limited in the SB, but they are there... unfortunately it's part of every day life moderating it would be rather hectic. From my personal exp the guys there don't usually rant and rave and use foul language, and if we do someone does usually ask them to tone down.
There is a archieve on the SB but are you seriously that bored to go looking at the millions of shouts that's archieved?

Laurie made one post here, and it was a complaint. It's kind of rude coming on to a site and making demands when you haven't contributed anything.
There is foul language (and a lot worse) all over the 'net: get NetNanny or something if you can't be bothered to supervise your young 'uns.

More of a suggestion though if you ask me.
We could just have said that: We don't censor the sb, but if someone swears in excess we will do....
That would have been better - rather than yelling and screaming

Sorry, what I meant was that she was expecting something for nothing.
If one member abuses another in the SB, makes racial slurs, etc. then the shout gets moderated or deleted. Normal swearing is ok, as long as it's not excessive.

If my memory serves me right, the "swear word" in the sb on that day was something like "shit" To me Laurie, was a bit oversensitve, but true, maybe a better response would have been to say we dont sensor "mild" foul language.

While I do take Laurie's comment, the fact of the matter is that this is a Forum for over 13's, there is no excessive swearing in the shoutbox, I have sworn there before but it's all in context and nobody goes overboard and just swears.
Laurie are your children over 13?
also if they are, they are more prone to school kids trying to get in their pants and swearing around school than harmless swearing on a primarily Adult user base. You have swearing in the office, meetings with colleagues friends etc. it's a part of life these days.

RenagadeNukes, are you really 14? If so maybe posts should be censored.

I think this issue has been flogged enough here, and is veering way off topic. Please continue the discussion in the Censorship thread.
