Is there anyone running vista here yet? Whats your opinion on it?
Milano
Vista looks great but I have no plans to upgrade to Vista in January - probably in 6 to 12 months though.
CrEaTi0n
Yes, its not like office which you can upgrade and rollback without any problems. Vista is a whole new kettle of fish wink.gif
fx
Do they plan to maintain support for _all_ apps that used to run on XP? Apparantly there are a lot of games that just don't work at the moment?
CrEaTi0n
I would guess its a matter of time as everything needs to get ported now, until then i suppose its a personal choice. I for one, wont change until everything is nicely supported and all the little issues are ironed out...
fx
Quite an interesting article on Vista, As Microsoft looks ahead, will Vista be the end of an era?

Who are "they" fx? MS?
fx
Ye sorry, I mean will Microsoft be "officially" supporting all apps that ran on XP?
cyfermaster
I voted yes, which is not totally true. I was running it, but rolled back as I was running the Beta release one and I couldn't find sound drivers for it. It supported all the stuff I installed, but a computer with no sound just doesn't cut it for me. sad.gif
fx
Rolled back? If I install the full Vista would I be able to roll back to my XP?? Or did you roll back with a sledge hammer and a format?
cyfermaster
hehehe. I have all my stuff on a HDD, and my windows is on a seperate HDD. I had a small 20 gig laying around so I took my OS HDD out, put the 20 gig in my rig and installed it on that. Didn't like it so I just changed my HDD's again. tongue.gif
fx
lol, I want to try it so badly. I'm mainly worried about application support and games sad.gif
RustPuppet
I was running it up until this weekend when the lack of video overclocking was too much for me and I went back to XP. Also, the current nVidia Vista drivers are known to jack up temps quite a bit sad.gif

Otherwise everything worked fine, so when proper display drivers a re released I'll probably go back to it.
BigRob2k8
I might try it out over the winter break, I downloaded the RC1 version from Microsoft & got my key from them, so I'm gonna test it out, since my school lets out on winter break on the 15th & we dont' get back till the 4th of January, smile.gif

I'm gonna see if it'll run on my computer, luckly I have a extra 40GB laying around that's collecting dust, ^__^
cyfermaster
Keep us informed on how it goes. Let us know if you have any install problems. I quite like the way the install goes. smile.gif Welcome to the forums as well.
BigRob2k8
I've been registered for a while, just forgot 'bout the link, can't really remember all the links I goto, its kinda hard to do that, smile.gif

since I had to go through hella IDE cables & hdds since most of them crashed or stoped working some how.

but this hard drive I have now for my main one, works perfectly for like 5months now, hopefully it'll last longer then my old Maxtor hard drive.
cyfermaster
Well, glad that you found the link again. Maybe add it to your favourites. smile.gif What make HDD you using now? I haven't had problems with Maxtors before.
BigRob2k8
I'm still using a Maxtor 60GB, had this one for @ least 3months or so, hoepfully it stays working, my last one I brought with me over from Washington DC to california, it was working fine for a while till I turn it on one day & it some how lit on fire so I grabbed all the cables riped it off & chuck the whole computer into the dumbster since it was useless, dunno how can hdd catch on fire, but o well, right now I have

Maxtor 60GB HDD [main] partion to 20GB/40GB
WD 80GB HDD left it normal
WD 120GB HDD left it normal
WD 120GB HDD sata [need a controller for it] which I can probally get after christmas if its cheap afterwards. smile.gif
found a bundle pack, but it'll cost me 100$

then I'm saving money to buy a laptop so I can use for college next semester.
Ink
oooh, Maxtor is bad news IMHO! nothing but hassles with Maxtor HDDs!

wrt Vista, I will also wait before I run it for more than a few days. I'll at least wait until nVidia have released some decent drivers for it.... and creative, have heard some ppl have/had problems with their X-FI cards.
But the move will happen, it's inevitable!
cyfermaster
Interesting. I haven't had any problems with my Maxtors. sad.gif Each to there own I guess.
Fishfly
good grief I'm struggling big time with this stupid vista and creative x-fi beta drivers... my popping and crackling sounds like my speakers about to BLOW with the frequency that it's emitting you'd think that someone blew a 10000W speaker in your ear

RAID... urm ok lets not go there... what a nightmare it was setting this up crying.gif now my pc will never be the same sad.gif
CyberStorm
I'm currently adopting the wait and see approach...

Interesting reads. Very interesting. Perhaps I will hold off a bit until they resolve these issues, or just install it on a machine with no inet to test it out. tongue.gif

Thats what I'm gonna do - At least until there is a 'Service Pack 2' or something similar. Despite these fatal flaws, Vista looks, visually anyway, bloody awesome.
Carrots
I think I'm gonna install it this weekend, if I can find space to backup my HD when I repartition. (made a mistake on the first partitioning.)
I will let you know how it goes.
cyfermaster
How much space do you need to backup? I think I have an HDD laying around here doing nothing for now. You could use that, if indeed I do have it laying around. will check if you need it.
TheSmartPC
I have been using XP for sometime. Quite tired of playing catchup with those updates they keep releasing.

Really can see any real benefits for using Vista at this moment. Will upgrade with new PC thought and hopefully by which time, they will have less Vista updates rolling out.

What I really like to see is a ROM version of Vista. I mean how often you change your OS and I just hate the harddisk clunking away loading up the OS.
docmoo
i just put on the vista style pack biggrin.gif it's enough for me
cyfermaster
I did that at work. smile.gif haha. It is classic when people come to you and say, how can you be running Vista at work? CLASSIC I tell you. smile.gif
Carrots
A spare HD would be great! I really want to repartition my 320GB hd, but anything would help.
I didnt get round to doing this weekend because of the backup problem. I started backing up some stuff on DVD though. sad.gif
cyfermaster
Okay kewl. I will have a look for it this evening. Will let you know.
RustPuppet
I see nVidia have finally released official drivers for Vista, time for a reinstall this weekend w00t.gif
Munch
Hmm i dont think im ganna go into Vista till theres a service pack The First Version Is always very unstable. *Blames Bill Gates* tongue.gif
RustPuppet
I've been running it for a few weeks and I haven't had a single crash or serious error yet. Sure, some programs are a bit iffy due to compatibility issues but it seems a hell of a lot more polished than XP was when it came out.
Carrots
I finally managed to find a HD to backup my stuff on. Tonight is the night. I couldnt find motherboard drivers though, I hope Vista has some good ones built in.
cyfermaster
I need to get hold of install files again sad.gif
Carrots
Of vista?

I can help you with this. Seeing as it is a free download of the MS site....
cyfermaster
PM me the link, or post it here. I will simply download it.
Fishfly
hmmm looks like the creative beta drivers for the x-fi is working but still very buggy sad.gif
I see there's a final version of the gpu drivers out for nvidia
RustPuppet
Which chipset?
Fishfly
geforce drivers
Carrots
I see no drivers for intel 975x, think it might be included with vista?
Fishfly
hmmmm I just read apprently if you install an vista on a system and you change the CPU the validation process gets stuffed
RustPuppet
Lies, I changed from my 3500+ to my Opty and I didn't have a single issue.

Ooh, and the 100.x series drivers are apparently awesome.
Fishfly
dude you don't have a original vista...
RustPuppet
I have the RTM version, which I've been testing with. Of course I couldn't activate it, but surely there shouldn't be much difference when swapping out a CPU in an activated/non-activated version?
Carrots
i r noob: I didnt download it myself, the guy at work that did says you follow the link from MSDN.

I installed vista last night. MSDN volume license. Of course I couldnt get permission from the MD to use a company key to test the new OS at home, so currently I am running it without a key. I consider it a trial version (for 30 days) to see if I wanna spend the money when it is in stores.
So far, no!

Daemon tools and Alcohol 120% doesnt install. EDIT: So MAYBE I just need to download the 64bit versions blush.gif
I can no longer drag and drop into my winamp V6.24 playlist.
GOMPlayer doesnt keep its file associations is automatically sets
Coretemp doesnt launch
TAT doesnt launch
3DM 2005 bombs out after the first test.
Its still the same old windows. I got the "(not responding)" thing in my explorer window when copying across a network and turning off the other PC.
The windows froze once, and I couldnt even drag them about the screen. Granted, the PC was under a heavy multi-tasking and copying load, but I thought that was supposed to be a thing of the past.
The nice 3D window view thing is basically a nice looking alt-tab.
Once, just after startup, control panel would close just after I launched it. A bit later it worked again though.

I dont know if it is my imagination, but my Audigy's sound quality under XP was a little bit better, or I havent found the sweet spot with the equalizer yet.

It looks pretty though.
Joe
The trick is to wait between 12 and 24 months for it to become stable tongue.gif

It does look bloated though... eugh.
