Actor Robin Shou, a constant in the “Mortal Kombat” films, has revealed that he won’t be reprising his role as the gallant fighter Lui Kang in the forthcoming “Mortal Kombat 3”, after all. According to Shou, the film will feature a new hero….
….wait for it……
Sub Zero.
Yep, one of the icy villains from the first two films will be the 'savior of all', this time ‘round. Taking a page out of “The Mummy Returns”/”Scorpion King” playbook, where the villain of the first film returned in a later film - a prequel - as a hero, the film will track back a few years, fixing on the younger – more honorable years – of the character, it seems. (What one has to remember, too, is that Sub Zero has a long bloodline – so the Sub Zero in this new prequel, might also be simply a relation of the one we’ve seen previously....... shit, just exposed myself as a one-time chronic player of the game, on the old Sega MegaDrive, didn't I?).
“Apparently, Sub-Zero will be the new hero. How’d that come about? Nobody knows. As if my character never existed. The story supposedly takes place before Lui Kangs time. A prequel of prequel” The Unofficial Mortal Kombat 3 Page quoted Shou as saying. “I haven’t read the script but the word out there was... bad. I guess that’s why it’s taking this long for it to happen. I guess the main reason was that the producer didn’t want pay the original casts their regular fee so by taking out all of the original characters, replacing with new characters, so they could hire unknown actors for a cheaper price. That’s showbiz."
No word on whether Keith Cooke is still attached to reprise his role as Sub Zero, as originally planned.
Initially, most of the original “Mortal Kombat” cast, including Shou, Linden Ashby and Christopher Lambert, had been asked back for this new film – tentatively titled “Mortal Kombat : Devastation” – but things changed, it seems. In fact, a lot of things have changed with this one.... they were originally going to shoot in New Orleans, but have had to find a new locale after the Hurricane Katrina mess, with Thailand and New Mexico now in their sights.

Err... I'll wait for it to come out on TV. Thanks.
