I just got back from supper for my friends 20th birthday. We decided to go to the Spur here in Edenvale since it's pretty close to my house and used to be a pretty good place.
It just wasn't my night! So we order drinks, and they have a table talker on the table with an advert for three different cocktails. So I see this frozen Pina Colada and decide to try that. The waitress comes back and informs me they don't have it in stock... So ok it already annoys me that they have this advert of something on the table but they out of stock of it. So I decide to just order an orange juice. And guess what, again the waitress comes back and says sorry they outta orange juice. Ok so screw that I just asked for a glass of water, half expected her to come back and say they were out of cold water
Now on to the main meal. I decide to go for the Chicken Cordon Bleu, which according to the menu comes with both mushroom and cheese sauce (not that I really cared) Ok so then I order that, and the waitress asks me if I want cheese or mushroom sauce. So I say cheese, and then realise two quesitons down the line that it's supposed to come with both. So I ask her about it and she says no it's one or the other, where it specifically says "AND" on the menu. She still doesn't seem to believe this, but I said I want both cause that's what it says on the menu, so that's what I got
The chicken was good, baked potatoe sucked, didn't eat anything else. But wasn't the best time ever. I'm not going back there again

Did you say anything to the management? Did you mention that you had a really shoddy waitress?

Umm.. actually no. I'd rather just complain here it's easier
Oh, and actually I forgot about something above. After the orange juice was out of stock, I tried ordering a Iced Cappucino, which they also didn't have..
So I actually managed to choose three drinks in a row that they didn't have..
That wasn't actually the waitresses fault, although she should have know what they didn't have stock of.

You should have, or should still mention it to the management there. That is the only way they can improve things there.

I might go back and do that actually.
Even if the waitress gave us bad service I still would feel bad getting her in trouble. I worked as a waiter last year and I know how mean those guys can be even when you make a small mistake.

yeah, I know. You don't have to make it out that you had a bad waitress. But you can complain that they were out of stock on a lot of things on the menu, and that your food wasn't the best. Then you can just slip in that your waitress didn't know the menu completely. You don't have to say who your waitress was.

Everyone makes mistakes and being a waiter is a kak job but even if you make a mistake you should still respect the customers (unless he or she is very unreasonable). Complaining is your right as a customer if things are wrong or you could just tip bad, that also makes your point to the waitress.

Did the waitress seem nervous?
I would have also felt a tad bad (fear my rhymes) for getting her into trouble, but only if she seemed like she was maybe still learning the ropes.
If she had an attitude, i would have most def informed management about the poor service.
Is it just me, or are the steaks from Spur looking smaller these days? Prices are also soaring over there.
Heck, it costs like R10 for a can of Coke these days - double the normal price.
The other kak thing is that bad service seems to be more and more the norm on SA...

In the spur in Parys they gave me PROCESSED CHEESE with my cheddarmelt steak!
With the price we pay for the thing they can at least give you a 50c more expensive piece of cheese!

She didn't seem nervous at all actually
My grandfather was also complaining about the price of the Cokes there, he said he saw one earlier in the day while shopping, 2l for less than they charged for a large coke there. But I suppose you expect that when going to a restaurant.

you prob just went on an extremely busy nite so everything was eaten up by the pigs next door
Azgard
Jun 26 2006, 02:09 AM
There were maybe 5 other tables the whole time I was here last night. Suppose they could have been busy before that, at say 5 or 6 PM, but I doubt it.

not to be giving the restaurant a bad name, but last year i went to standerton spur with family and the service was so bad, and the quality of the things we ordered turned out real bad. i've never been there since

IMO every time the waitress buggers something up her tip gets halved
Seriously though, Spur is completely useless nowadays. Next time skip it completely, or at least let them know you won't accept shoddy service so they don't repeat their mistakes.

That's mean. But I suppose it is fair. Just make sure you do that if it is actually the waiter/waitresses fault. So many times as a waiter I got it trouble for something when it was the kitchen or one of the managers that had screwed it up!
So it's seems most Spurs are like that now then, thought it might just be the one around here. But others also haven't had a good time there.
Should find a new restaurant to go to

lol. isn't dros similar to spur? go there i think the problems with the waiters / waitresses at spurs, is that they are too young. dunno, just an opinion.
Azgard
Jun 27 2006, 03:33 AM
Never been to Dros, maybe will try it out next time.
Well for them to be out of stock of stuff is the managers fault, and for the food to be bad is generally the chefs fault. But if the waiters/waitresses are too young then that doesn't help things at all.

its all these kids who need extra money to go boozing. cocky little shits most of them. the chefs aren't too great either generally speaking.

Lol, come to think of it most of the people I used to work with were like that. Although a lot of them made a lot more money than me because they were much nicer to the customers and everything.
But true a lot of them are too cocky. Luckily didn't have many like that at the place I worked.

I have to buck the trend here and say that I have experienced nothing but good service and value for money from any of the Spurs I have been to. Granted, they have all been in the main centres in SA but yeah I've always been happy. It's also a great place to take kids, if you have any.
I also booked the Spur a month or so ago for my daughter's fifth birthday party. It went off without a hitch.
I'm a fan.

Well glad you like the place
A good friend of mine also really likes Spur, although she doesn't go there anymore cause she only eats at Kosher places now.
Not sure which Spur/s she has gone to though, I think all places have their good and bad days.

It might just be a matter of timing. You go to a place a few times and each time you get shoddy service, then you hate the place. On the other end of the spectrum, you'll end up loving it. The universe is playing a sick sick game man!

I think Spur is the worst restuarant ever. I cant understand how they make there money. Their food is so bad, the only thing I can stomach is there steaks, everything else pretty much sux

i remember back in the day spur used to have good ribs as well as hungerbuster burgers... but that was well over five years ago!
Azgard
Jun 30 2006, 05:15 AM
I also remember it being one of the best places, always used to go there especially for their ribs! Since most of my family loves ribs
Well things change, maybe they'll get better again in another 5 years
