I'm sure everyone's had encounters with old people on the roads: they often drive way too slowly, obstructing traffic flow, or they pull risky maneuvers like changing lanes randomly (minus indicators) or braking suddenly for no apparent reason. I've also seen old drivers bashing other cars in parking lots and at intersections. In fact, a couple of months ago a friend of mine had an old lady do a hit-and-run in a parking lot right in front of her: her bumper was taken clean off and the old lady didn't even notice as she drove away o_O
What do you guys think, should old people be allowed to drive? I think that either:
1) Licences should be revoked after 65 or thereabouts (in most cases) 2) There should be a mandatory competency test at 60 and every few years after that, testing vision, reflexes, parking, etc.
I think the first option might cause a lot of issues, and there also isn't much infrastructure to provide public transport for unsafe drivers.
Comments?

I agree completely with option 2! And yes, option one would cause a massive uproar, as well as be a whole lot of unfair. I know some oldies, I mean real oldies, like 85, who can driver perfectly well, so no need to penalise the majority just because some fools are getting a bit senile. Regular tests after 65 sound good to me. Ps: you have PM RustPuppet

NO! old ladies should get drivers to take them shopping on Mondays!
I've seen a couple old ladies that's bumped cars in the parking lot in Hyde PARK!
wtf?
I've also seen a old lade that's taken out a Harley at the parking lot and then ride over it and still drive off without noticing!!!

I agree with Gitano, i also know 80 odd, year old's that still drive perfectly.
And option 2 is already started implementation, why do you think you have to go renew your drivers licsense every 5 years? People older than 65 also have to produce a medical fitness sertificate, with the standard eye test etc.

That is for renewing your photo according to the traffic dept, and probably to give you incentive to clear your fines occasionally. It has nothing to do with age, they'll renew anyone's licence.

Doesn't help doing the eye tests. My gran only has 2% vision, she did the eye test and passed and they gave her her new licence last year.... Man those guys must be on some good drugs there!!!!!

Old People should drive taxis...at least when they change lanes at 12km/h we will able to plan ahead and avoid them. Not to mention we will get our revenge on all the gawking passengers when alzheimer and flatulence sets in. Oh oh and the hearing trouble... "Where? To old toe? Lady I got gout leave me alone" "No gogo Soweto!"
And maybe hook the taxi up with ultra strong and hyper sensitive brakes so when they try to stop their teeth will be launched out of the windscreen and will hopefully impale a street vendor....
Again this is just my wishful thinking on a monday morning.

I am totally in favor of this. I have been run off the road time and again by old people in their cars. They're not only a menace to society but a danger to other motorists, pedistrians, and stationary objects. Give them a rascal and send them on their way to the pace bus stop.

Most old people I know drive just fine. Most of the bad drivers are the young ones that are just getting thier licenses and think they have total control over the roads.
