If given the choice to own, drive a car would you choose a BMW or a Mercedes?
Little Devil
Mother would choose Merc, I'd go BMW
Heir_of_Isildur
BMW.

They are aimed at the younger generation, so it should be no surprise. Merc is more limo-esque, and it just feels like some old fart should be driven around in them, except cars like the SL 55, they're not too bad. I saw a Merc proto-type the other day and it is very sexy.

BMW has more gadgets to keep an electronically obsessed person happy. BMW has better overall performance than Merc (except for super-cars). They are not afraid of embracing newer technologies like wire-throttles, electronic brakes etc.

BMW are cheaper by a long ways, but manage to keep up i.t.o. everything that matters about a luxury vehicle.

I'm a Mercedes man.

Audi all the way

Never had a Merc before but drove plenty and maybe i'll buy one once I reach 70.

Had a BMW 740I pretty much as high as you go and couldn't recommend BMW, almost bought a 328i but it just wasn't me.

had an Audi A4 2.8 Exec and to me this was still my best car.

Drive a Polo 96KW TDI Sportline with all extras and couldn't really recommend VW either although it hasn't given me a day's grief the Audi for price/vlaue ratio was soo much better and more classy.

So Audi for me
Britz
shouldnt audi also be an option???

me personally, i would go for "Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach" aka Mercedes-AMG

but i would have to say this is the best mercedes-benz

Audi FTW!!!

New RS4 smile.gif

some info

Also comes in Avant (Stationwagon) form.... "Crazy Dad" can scare the neighbourhood kids by giving them all a ride in his "family car" smile.gif

I like it that Audi is stylish and sophisticated, without being an old man's car. Where the BMW has a lot of gadgetry, the Audi continually innovates with new mechanical technology, like the quatro 4wd system (which is old, but Audi was the first)

Although I like the new BMW's shape VERY much!

I dont really like any new cars, based on looks.

But if i could get it for free and didnt have to pay insurance or services i'd settle for a Merc.

Hierdie nuus pas in. 'n Onlangse studie deur die onafhanklike outoriteit op zef, www.watkykjy.co.za, het bevind dat BMW die zefste motor ter wereld is. Soos meeste van ons weet behoort hierdie akkolade al 'n geruime tyd aan Ford maar dit het onder ons aandag gekom dat BMW op Maandag, 12 Desember omstreeks 15:00 vir Ford verbygesteek het.

QUOTE
Before we set off for our trans-alpine tri-country drive, this looked like a no-brainer: on paper, the BMW was the winner. But at the end of day three, it transpired to be a much closer match than expected. Without any doubt, the M6 is the sportier sport coupe. On sheer ability, the Bavarian two-plus-two is occasionally in a class of its own. In terms of charm and charisma, however, the AMG car has the edge.

Which one to choose? Great cars though they are, it would be best to wait for the BMW M5 with a manual transmission. At about $85,000, it should be priced about the same as a base CLS55 AMG and thousands less than the M6. Not only does it feature no-frills shifting, it also offers plenty of room for passengers and luggage and has enough stealth to fool uninformed law enforcement officers. It promises to be the smartest buy by a long shot, available at a BMW dealer near you in late 2006.

it's probably Miles per hour.

And regardless, the 250 kmph of the BMW will have been 'regulated' by a gentleman's agreement. Most cars are limited to 250kmph these days.
Wolf
Your'e probably right.

If its Miles per hour it translates to 248Km/h roughly so then they are close together anyway.

Wa?!? I like Honda's too, but they certainly are NOT cheap. They are way over-priced in SA, as the Merc's ( and ironically they are linked).
W@RP@T}{
Wish I could post the movie I have of an RS6 drilling a Porsche 996 TT (twin Turbo)!!! and an E55 AMG, the RS6 actually laps the E55!!!

Then you would see what i'm talking about, and it's the Avant (you can almost see the baby on board sticker.

Just for your information as well, Audi say the RS6 is limited to 250KM/h but everyone is getting over 280KM/h in them. The reasoning given is that Audi are going for understatement and letting the reviews talk for themselves. It's known the S4 runs circles around the M3 and in the Wet it only gets worse. The RS4 is another monster that drills the M3 CSL, RS6 for the current contenders, Just remember the RS6 competes with the M6, the RS6 was first made in 2002 that's like 4 years ago, the M6 is brand spanking. If you think Merc or BMW stand a chance even if they started to whip the Audi it would only be a few months until you see a Lamborghini V-10 Monster apear in one.

I think i've just ruled the line. you might be comparing BMW, Audi, Merc.

Remember Lamborghini is now made by Audi....... Nuf said!

actually I've always loved the Audi A3... but can never afford one and for 200k I'd rather take a merc kompressor biggrin.gif

warpath in terms of average user driving on the road having a RS4 that can whip any car and go so many 250+ km/h is gonna do jack shit here...

firstly can you afford that RS4?
How fast can you drive it if you actually have one?
yeah you may drive it at over 250km but here in JHB you hit a pothole it's bye bye car and driver.
Whata about the nobs that's lobbing bricks off the bridge?
how about getting a skretch on that beauty?
what about the perfect taxi's that'll just block you with their perfect parking in the road?

besides the post is about BMW or Merc tongue.gif

I woudl choose a Merc over a BMW anyday biggrin.gif
W@RP@T}{
Fish your Questions are all bullshit

This post swayed from the usual BMW, Audi, Merc to the beasts ofd the range. M6 etc. Which I never brought to the plate firstly. Secondly you haven't had any one of the makes in question. I've had two and drove a few of #3 from a AMG 2L to a SL500, out of my own experience i'd go for the Audi over the other two, i've stated my aguement. You can't argue that the merc is more comfortable, more reliable, more luxurious etc. If your not in the know or haven't been in the equivelent competition car. You say Audi is expensive. for instance sake, take a decked C230 Kompressor with the same featureset, a A3 3.2L V6 Sportline and a BMW 120i fully decked the same they all cost roughly the same and for my moolah it would be the audi any day of the week.

Just to bring some answers to this garbage.

warpath in terms of average user driving on the road having a RS4 that can whip any car and go so many 250+ km/h is gonna do jack shit here... If you say so......

firstly can you afford that RS4? Prob Not...... Even if I try...... at a stretch maybe...... The bank thought I could afford a 1.15 Mill house so who knows.

How fast can you drive it if you actually have one? As fast as you push the loud pedal and your balls let you keep pushing if you want. So till the limit easilly.

yeah you may drive it at over 250km but here in JHB you hit a pothole it's bye bye car and driver. That's the risk you take in your own hands you dont sign an indemnity when you buy one but if you're going to drive it to the max you will know the risks you are taking into your hands. For interest sake if you crash in that RS4 at 200KM/h you still have a good chance of survival.

Whata about the nobs that's lobbing bricks off the bridge? Yes I see them smashing cars every day, i've learnt to power steer as they continue smashing peoples cars dropping a load of 1000 bricks they they get delivered to the bridge. No Dummy...... you prob have more chance of a Taxi taking you out, being struck by lighning etc. that being hit by a brick. Do you wortry when your driving on the highway about being hit by a brick?

how about getting a skretch on that beauty? It's going to happen?? I mean WTF? are you going to buy a nice car and then bubblewrap the whole thing just in case the environment gets the better of your paintwork?? Where's the sense in that.

what about the perfect taxi's that'll just block you with their perfect parking in the road? And it matters that you have an RS4 for this to happen? WTF? if you have a chico it can happen......

Once all this is said who cares about a RS4, I said I would take a RS6 over all other makes equivelent and I still would.
Fishfly
QUOTE

firstly you have no right to comment regarding this, I've driven a Merc 240E and a 220E and a 200C and not just test driving, had all 3 cars for over 3 weeks EACH.
I've also driven the BMW 120 for 4 days. Give me some idea of the car with 4 days of driving.

My whole argument here is based on a typical driver like you, myself or cyfermaster who most probably will not see the light of a Merc S55 or a BMW M6 with our salary.
So what are you left with? I would rather much drive/Sit in a Merc C220 or a E240 class than a BMW 120, 325 due to the Comfort and Luxury. I never SAID anything about RELIABILITY or POWER of a car did I?

Just because you prefer a Audi doesn't mean that everyone must have a AUDI to applease you. Hell you even admit that you don't drive a audi but a VW... what does that prove?

between the two cars that was presented I prefered a Merc. I did infact mention that i also liked the Audi A3 but the 20k price hike from 180k to 205k does not do the car any justice! Seeing as for around that price you can get a Merc Kompressor...

As for the higher more expensive price range I've never driven a M6 or even had a RS6 or a SL550 and the likes so I cannot compare and say which is better... and you of all people should know tech spec is not the same when you are driving it.

Can you seriously tell me that driving a merc with 300W HP is completely different to a BMW with 305W HP?? (these are just example figures)
W@RP@T}{
Just because you prefer a Audi doesn't mean that everyone must have a AUDI to applease you. Hell you even admit that you don't drive a audi but a VW... what does that prove? I've told everyone that I would rather have my Audi back, you included as well as far as I recall..... so what does that prove? do I win a prize.

LOL and does this prove anything?

Audi, VW 'most satisfying to own'
20/12/2005 11:56

Two Audi and two Volkswagen models rank highest in satisfying owners, according to the JD Power and Associates/CAR Magazine 2005 South Africa Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study(SM) released on Tuesday.

The four awards - which are the most received by any manufacturer in the study - are for the Audi A3, Audi A4, Volkswagen Citi Golf and the Volkswagen Touran.

In addition to the Volkswagen-Audi models, General Motors and Mitsubishi models each received two awards while BMW, Ford, Honda and Subaru models each received a single award.

The CSI Study is a comprehensive measurement of ownership satisfaction covering 77 attributes grouped into four factors of satisfaction (the importance of each factor is shown as a percentage):
# Vehicle quality and reliability (32%)
# Vehicle appeal (29%) - includes performance, design, comfort, styling and features
# Dealership service satisfaction (19%)
# Cost of ownership (20%) - includes fuel consumption, insurance and cost of service/repair

The importance weights are developed based on survey responses from vehicle owners, thus reflecting what is most important to South Africa's motorists.

CSI performance is reported as an index score based on a 1000-point scale. A higher CSI score indicates a more satisfying ownership experience.

Although the cost of ownership factor score has improved significantly in 2005, it remains the lowest rated of the four CSI factors at the industry level.

Contributing to the low cost-of-ownership scores are poor ratings for insurance costs, cost of service/repair and fuel consumption.

"This finding is an important reminder that when shopping for a new vehicle, it is essential to consider more than just the cost of purchasing the new vehicle," said Brian Walters, senior director of European operations at J.D. Power and Associates.

"The costs of owning and operating a vehicle can turn an otherwise satisfying ownership experience into a financial hardship."

At the brand level, Subaru leads the South African market in CSI by 16 index points over second-ranked BMW. Rounding out the top five nameplates are Audi, Honda and Volvo, respectively.

To reach the pole position, Subaru has improved by 50 index points in 2005, more than any other nameplate. Other nameplates improving significantly in 2005 include Nissan (+32 index points), Fiat and Honda (each +27 index points) and Kia and Mazda (each +24 index points).

Subaru receives the highest ratings in two of the four CSI factors: vehicle quality/reliability and service satisfaction. BMW leads in vehicle appeal, while Audi excels in ownership costs.

"The presence of Subaru and Honda among the most satisfying nameplates is proof that motorists in South Africa do not need to buy the most expensive vehicles to get a truly satisfying ownership experience," said Walters.

"In fact, the presence of compact cars, luxury sedans, MPVs and SUVs among the most satisfying models is evidence that satisfying vehicles come in all shapes, sizes and price points."

About the CSI

"The J.D. Power and Associates South Africa CSI provides new-vehicle shoppers with invaluable information about key aspects of the vehicle ownership experience," said John Wright, editor of CAR magazine.

"The comprehensive nature of the CSI measure provides South African consumers information on what it is like to drive and own a specific nameplate or model. The research and results are made more valuable by the fact they are based on information provided by actual owners of the vehicles."

J.D. Power and Associates is recognised across the globe as the leading independent authority on customer satisfaction in the automotive industry.

The firm's primary role is to help automotive manufacturers further improve their product quality and service levels through a better understanding of consumers.

J.D. Power and Associates also provides top-line results of its automotive studies to consumers for use as a reference point when purchasing a new vehicle.

The South Africa CSI Study is conducted independently by J.D. Power and Associates to establish a benchmark of vehicle ownership satisfaction in the South Africa market. The survey was carried out in cooperation with the Department of Transport (DOT), which facilitated the distribution of questionnaires.

The study is based on responses from more than 10400 owners of new vehicles first registered between October 2003 and September 2004.

Apparently they are a great driving experience

Who needs any other reasons.....

My Audi A4 2.8 Exec was:

Cheap
Fairly Quick
Had Lots of power
Had all extras under the sun (s/r, ABS, Aircon, e/w, leather, etc. etc.)
Reliable
Tough (i'm hard on cars)
Stable
Comforatable
Stylish

And for it's price a damn damn good buy. I'm actually thinking of buying another one.

Glad you didn't put handles well there W@RP@T}{ laugh.gif

Even though some people may have brought the M6 etc in to the thread, the M6 and SL55 are still a BMW and a Merc. So they were on topic so to say. I don't really see a problem with anyone bringing other cars in to it either though. Trout... VW and Ausdi are both from the Lindsay Saker group, so W@RP@T}{ is still keeping it in the "family" also note how he prefers the Lambo to a ferrari... Any guesses on who owns Lambo??? tis AUDI. biggrin.gif

I have driven BMWs, Mercedes and Audis and I must say that of those three the BMW and Audi come up tops. This is not to say I wouldn't have a Merc if one was given to me. bleh.gif

If you CAN drive, and by that I mean REALY CAN drive, I think the BMW would give you most bang for your buck with its rear wheel drive. If you dont mind replacing your tires a bit more often.

QUOTE
And in J.D. Power's influential study of long-term vehicle dependability, which measures problems encountered by owners of three-year-old cars, Mercedes scored far below the industry average in the 2005 survey; Mercedes owners reported more than twice as many problems per 100 cars as top-ranked Lexus.

Read all about it

I think that this topic should include all luxury cars, like Lexus, Audi, and even Volvo to some extent.
