Okay, this is not so new anymore but seeing as there never was a thread about this (and I wonder if there was a Mezmerize one?). I bought this cd a while back and instant response was that it felt better than Mezmerize.
Mezmerize was a pleasant album with a great melody throughout all the songs with the expection of one mellow song (Lost In Hollywood and the Soldierside Intro). Very catchy guitars and drums Darron's voice is used more than on the two previous cd's. It took a few listenings to get used to it all but it still gets played frequently in my playlist. However, the feeling that I got from Hypnotize was more serious and SOAD than the first entry in the two-part thing. Sure the catchy riffs and weird voices are still present in certain songs but it seems as if Darron took a bigger part of the leading voice for him which gives some songs an unique sound (Lonely Day is enough to make me feel bad for his sake).
Comparing it to the previous albums is not possible, this isn't System with their first self-titled album, this isn't the more refined on steroids Toxicity sound but leans closer to the Mezmerize sound (if you have listened to it you will know what I mean). A mix of political and own experiences are found in the songs (like Mezmerize). It does it just fine for me though and I had many joyfull listening sessions and sing-alongs with this one, still the best way to listen is just to put it as loud as possible.

I've only heard a few of the songs from the album, so it's difficult for me to say what's changed since Mezmerize.
On a different note, I never know if I can take SoaD seriously. Their videos are wierd, and their music is very political, but not... weird.

I never listened to Mezmerize, only the byob or something like that song.
But Hypnotize is definitely the better than the previous albums imo. I dont like their political crap lyrics, but the music is great.

Where is the love for SOAD? I won't say they are the greatest band in the world but they sure have talent?
Lyrical wise it is good enough for me, it has this satirical side to it and they translate well into the softer songs (Spiders, Hypnotize, Soldiers Side, Roulette, ATWA,...)
Oh well...

I quote (sortof) "why do they always send the poor"
Because its the only thing the lazy bums contribute to the country. Its not like they pay taxes. Get over it...
Thats about how I feel about all their lyrics. Music is GREAT though!

I'm a definate SOAD fan. Though I haven't heard hypnotize, I do have Mezmerize, and thought it was their weakest attempt to date, with only about 3 tracks that I like. ("Sad Statue" being my favourite) I got the feeling they were going for sarcasm in the music and lyrics, and it went just a tad too far.
I'm 50/50 on the political stuff. They do go a bit harsh sometimes ("Prison Song" being particularly paranoid), but I think it's cool that they can stand up and say exactly how they feel about world politics, and it ends up sounding so good that I don't pay much attention to the "message".
I love their lyrics, and personally, I think the songwriting is genius.
