I'm having a rather large difference of opinion with my gf at the moment.

A bit of background: I enjoy 70 & 80's rock/metal a great deal. My favourite bands are Iron Maiden, AC/DC and Metallica.

Earlier this week, my gf was shown a cd about Satanism in music, by her aunt, who attended a seminar about Satanism at their local church a week or two ago.

This cd seems to claim that most rock/metal bands propagate Satanism through their music.

The bands she specifically mentioned to me were Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper.

She was especially 'concerned' about the fact that Maiden sing about 'the devil' and the 'number of the beast' and so on. 'They sing about death' and they advertise satanism through their music and I'm 'too stubborn to admit it'. But I 'know them personally' and they assured me 'that they're going to heaven'...??

She doesn't agree with the fact that I 'listen to satanic bands' and 'prays that' my 'eyes wil open and see them for what they are'.

I can't believe this bullshit!? I know about these extremist assholes that look for hidden reverse messages and 'study' lyrics of songs and then pump shit into the willing minds of whatever sheep they can get their hands on. I just laugh at the stupidity and patheticness of it all...

I tried to explain to her that this is the style of Maiden's music; History, mythology and the super-natural. She didn't want nothing of it.

I told her that she's entitled to her opinion, just like me and that she should respect mine.

This is a time-bomb waiting to explode - How do I approach this?

Well don't let it get out of hand biggrin.gif

Take a look at this thread from not too long ago about how subliminal messages sound...

That's going to be fun w00t.gif, maybe a lady would be a better guide.

Iron Maiden, AC/DC and Metallica.

Tell her that you pray she sees these bands for what they are... awesome!

Seriously, Iron Maiden is the worst example to use as a 'satanic' band because they are all practising Catholics. Just because now and then they have occult material in their lyrics doesn't make them satanists, think about it: the bible also mentions the devil but that doesn't make it a satanic book.

Slap her in the face and tell her to stop being pathetic. Next thing she'll ban video games and then we'll really be in the shit dry.gif

Yeah, this is a crappy situation, because on the one hand you dont wanna stop listening to the music, and on the other hamd she wants you to...

The problem lies on her side - she needs to accept that you listen to this music, and also accept that listening to music talking about Satan and Hell doesn't mean that you are gonna start killing kitties and drinking their blood while you sodomise a monkey.

Heck, I used to listen to a LOT of ganster music back when I was a teen, but that didn't make me get a glock and go on a killing spree - or constantly refer to women as "bitchez" and "hos"...

I listen to SEPULTURA alot, and that does not make me anything. On the other hand, I know 'when' to listen to this type of music, eg Metal/Gangster. I know that my girlfriend dont like it, so I listen to it in my car when I'm alone. This way I dont bother her.

I've been to some of these seminars. A load of brainwashing IMO. You know what you like, you dont need someone to tell you what you like !

Well this is what you should do... take your daddy's nice pump aksion... go visit one of these seminar's and when they start preaching about how these music is SATAN! then you whip otu your pump and show them some aksion... claiming that it was AC/DC that drove you to it and all these people belong in HELL!!!! :mwahahahahahaha: rifle.gif

urm ok back to reality... tell them to get a life...
Valheru
And i guess making money on the back of religion is better than people mentioning "devil" in their lyrics? People are so naive, i just whish some of them would open their eyes. Like people getting the AC/DC name wrong. WTF? They did not have a name and got it off some aunts/whatever appliance/whatever.

And why do people just eat up this shit without establishing the truth? Yes, most of these people are by no means morally acceptable, but if we have to go on that, NONE of us will listen to any music.

That's what I've done now - Removed all my Maiden stuff from my default iTunes playlists, so she won't hear it whenever she's at my place, in my car, etc.

This is the single most vaild question I've been trying to work out this past week, since I've started researching this crap.

But wait, the internet is evil too and it will make you burn in hell.

Well, I'm going against the grain, and also a bit offtopic.gif

I make up my own mind on these matters. I dont listen to Iron maiden, mainly because their CD covers that I have seen suggest that they are on the wrong side of where I draw my imaginary line.

I also dont listen to HIM, whose music is great, (The couple of songs I have heard of them anyway) mainly because of their name.

His Infernal Majesty.
infernal - relating to or inhabiting hell;

Thats my personal choice, and if you listen to it, it doesnt make you a Satanist or evil or anything that listening to Jurie Els doesnt make you.

Now reconciling your music and your gf, thats gonna be a toughie.
Listen to it where & when she cant hear it. But dont lie to her about it. Tell her you still listen to it, and out of respect for her, you wont let her hear it.

PS. I am not against metal. I do listen to Mettalica, AC/DC etc.

Fair enough, and that's your opinion which I repect.

Also a bit off topic, but a tad interesting; While reading up on all this, I came accross a comment on Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' album.

Looking at the cover, Eddie (the band mascot) and the devil are locked in battle, with Eddie 'playing' the devil like a puppet.

The idea from the writer was that if Eddie, a fictitious character, could control and ulitmately defeat the devil, how easy is it not for a human, who strongly belive in Christian religion, to overcome the devil?

Weird, but cool nontheless.

If she(or anyone for that matter) can understand this, then the problem should be solved.

Even if the bands in question were satanic, does she really think your that easy to dupe. That a little song and dance will change your entire belief system?

HIM is worth fighting for dood - and here is some ammo straight from Ville's mouth:
QUOTE
What does HIM stand for?

"Well, sometimes I wish that we’d picked other name for the band than HIM. The name constantly pisses me off. It’s utterly terrible! HIM! The upside is that it doesn’t actually mean anything, there are just three letters which are pronounced similarily in basically every language. It’s practical.

In almost every interview someone asks what does HIM stand for. I can’t even remember our latest lie about that. When Hanson was hot, we said it means Hanson Is Murder. The name doesn’t have a particular history. His Infernal Majesty was a totally different band. I think HIM derives from some death metal joke. And it was our protest to Haile Selassie’s rastafarian religion, he used to be called His Imperial Majesty. But nowadays because of Linde’s hair, we actually might be supporting him." No

What wrong with worshipping the devil? Without him we wouldnt be able to sin...and remember what is included as sin.

HIM produce some good tracks...but the whole Bam Mageira boning one of their crew is a bit...err...
Soilwork
There are satanic bands out there (The Project Hate, Dark Funeral and Entombed spring to mind). I am no satanist, but I dig their music. It is all a matter of whether you buy into their message or not. No matter how many times I hear The Project Hate I will not go out and worship the devil. If your GF thinks that you will because of the music you listen to, the she is a fool and has been manipulated by a bunch of bible bashers. Besides there are plenty of Christian metal and rock bands out there. Most Precious Blood, Dead to Fall, Underoath and a ton more. Music does not dictate what god you pray to nor what god will judge you. You and your actions decide that.
Aceius
Well said Soilwork.

The problem is that with them, it's either one way or the other.

You can't listen to "satanic" (and I use this work in the most sarcastic way possible) music AND still be christian - Either you're a christian or you're not.
Carrots
I dont wat to go quoting scriptures, mainly because I dont know the Bible well enough to actually qoute anything, but the idea goes like this.

You have to choose. And you cant choose both. You either choose God, or the world.

I am not saying that avoid anything that is not gospel music, but imo listening to something you know to be against God is definitely not choosing God.

My 2 cents worth.
snoopyluvs
Satanism isn't really as bad as people make it out to be. I am in the process of reading the satanic bible, I am not satanic but it isn't bad. BTW, I think first of all she needs to understand Satanism, because you need to understand the enemy, in her case it is probably Satanism, and she needs to realize that just because hell and the devil is mentioned doesn't mean it has anything to do with the religion. I believe that if she understood the religion a little better she would further understand the point you're trying to make.

I don't claim to know everything about Satanism though. I don't like lying or the thought of lying but maybe you could omit the fact that you still listen to those bands, just to make it a little easier, however don't say you don't listen to the bands, just tone it down in front of her. In the end it is your choice and not hers and if she can't accept you for that then I am sorry to say that she is probably not the one.
