Cruise Slammed For Sonogram Machine Purchase

Tom Cruise has been slammed for buying a sonogram (ultrasound) machine for his pregnant fiancee Katie Holmes, with health experts warning that he's putting his unborn child at risk.

Officials at the American College of Radiology (Acr) are highly concerned by Cruise's revelation that he purchased the device to track his child's progress, and they're warning him that he could be breaking the law if he's carrying out the scans himself.

Dr Carol M Rumack, of the Acr Ultrasound Commission, says, "This is a patient safety issue. Untrained people, even if they have the financial means, should not buy, or be allowed to buy and operate, ultrasound machines which are, in fact, medical devices and should not be used without a medical indication.

"Images of the foetus are an opportunity to diagnose problems before birth that may require treatment. These images should be obtained by certified technologists under the supervision of physicians properly trained in ultrasound...

"The Acr is concerned that Tom Cruise has been badly advised regarding the use and potential abuse of ultrasound. There are many abnormalities that may be missed by the untrained eye. Also, if it is not medically necessary, the use of ultrasound raises unnecessary physical risk to the foetus."

Oh, no worries, guys, he's a Scientologist and as such is over qualified in the use of all technical machines.

Seriously, the man is a fool, let him do what he wants so when their kid comes out even more deformed than it would be had he not decided to play doctor, he'll only have himself to blame.

Tom Cruise has gone mad!

Other than the Sonogram toy, he's the latest celebrity to fall for 'scientology'.

It's quite funny that you posted this Toasted, Just today I was looking at sites like TomCruiseisNuts, GagReporter (This one may be inappropriate for working environments).

I used to like the guy... now it feels like he's just trying to grab attention.

What a load of shit.

Sonograms arent harmful, if they where nobody would use them.
And Tom Cruise isnt dumb enough not to read the manual, lol.

Cummon its a nice thing to do, and its more personal with just him and Katie.

Once again I think the media are blowing things way out of proportion dry.gif
Carrots
I know nothing of sonograms, so I wouldnt know if it is harmfull or not.

It does sound like a nice thing to do, although completely crazy.

From the article it sounds more like the doctors are concerned that he wouldnt know how to spot signs that something has gone wrong.

Then again, no one has done tests to see what the effects of everyday sonar use has on a foetus.

My conclusion. After Willy Wonka and Michael Jackson, TC is the person I would keep my children the furthest away from. (If I had any)

LOL, if he's anything like an IT geek, he'll sonogram everything, himself, the cat, the couch etc etc...
Origin
He has seemed to become a bit looney lately. He is still a freakin cool actor and ill go watch all his movies out of principle.

It think it comes down to extremism. He is now an "extreme" scientologist, and exremism in any form or any religion is a bad thing.

As BadAvis said, i doubt it'll do any damage at all.

It would have been well cool if i had one of those when my boy was still in mums tummy.

Well I'm not so sure... X-Rays are harmful (when done in excess) and everybody does them, so I think it's the same with sonograms... and buying your own sonogram setup means that you're going to be using it a lot!

Yep thats why when you go for xrays the doctor puts a little lead bib over your jacobs and he goes and stands behind concrete telling you "you'll be fine"
Fishfly
well x-rays cause radiation... but sonograms... I have no clue sorry biggrin.gif

Afaik sonograms work in a similar fashion to radars. It uses sound waves to penetrate the tummy and then bounces back when it hits a certain kind of flesh/bone.

They reckon the 3D scans are much worse for your baby than normal ones.
