This isn't about one company but more a general view about movies and the dvd's that follow!
I hate paying for a dvd only to discover that there are no subtitles on it! Now I can follow a movie without subtitles but I just prefer it since I am used to it from overseas. My parents on the other hand don't even bother following a movie without subtitles (english ones will do just fine). I remember the dvd ads infront of movies when VHS was still the standard. How many subtitles, languages, extras etc etc it all contains. Do you know how many movies get released without even an english subtitle? Quite some and all this because it has to be produced faster and cheaper? It irritates the crap out of me to see this happening and even better is when it says on the back that it has a dutch subtitle track (among lets say 18 other languages) and when u pop the disc in there is no sight of anything remotely dutch. Well thank God though I have the choice between 15 languages I haven't even heard of!
While still on the dvd subject. Another thing that is pissing me off is the various versions a DVD goes through. Some I understand (like older releases from when DVD just started being updated) but other are just a money making scheme (especially when announced just after half of the world bought the bareboned version due to no other version known about). I collect movies, well actually just DVD's and I got about 850 now (all original nogal) and now I have to buy doubles because the new versions appeal more (Gladiator, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull to name a few). But what can you do about that right?
One of the things that does strike me is that a DVD is cheaper than a cd these days and if I can say one positive thing about the whole thing is that they know how to sell these things. Personally I think DVD is the best thing that ever happened to me (in movie loving terms) and I enjoy going through all the crap they offer from trailers to the 'fun' blooper reel to the sometimes interesting commentary tracks (while others just point out where the thing takes place). So it isn't all bad...
Now to get to the other point of irritation : RATINGS OF MOVIES!
We all know PG rated movies, PG13 and R - RATED (are there more in SA?).
But these days so many films get toned down for that PG13 rating because it has apparantly alot of influence in the US of A when it comes to box-office numbers (I don't think it would affect SA though). So what do we get, possible great movies which are now lame because it is made for a young audience! I watched Bewitched (crap movie just btw) and couldn't help feeling that if they just fucked the rating it would have been so much better... No one wants to hear a character who just got kicked in the nuts say 'Oh sjee wizz'. I wanna hear him 'You fucking retarded godless cunt' or something like that. AvP anyone? It was rated PG13, a movie about Aliens and Predators being toned down for a younger audience, wtf? They are supposed to rip the flying shit out of each other and what do we get? Cameras that move away from any possible gory shit going on (not that the movie would be saved just by gore just btw).
Now I am not saying that movies that are PG13 do not work because alot actually do (Batman Begins, War Of The Worlds, LOTR are recent examples) but some movies just have to be R-Rated because they are supposed to be for adults or the older teens... Maybe I am the only one who feels like this but I though I would just rant about it anyways....
