We all know the feeling, and be prepared to start having it right now.
After a few breif seasons of colour, black has bounced back, shown as a statement on runways as different as Chanel, Prada and Hussein Chalayan. So, is a "bat-black" fashion night about to descend? I don't think so. The way black took over fashion in the 1990s was so intense and all-encompassing that it swamped colour completely. There were reasons for that, including possibly, the fact that female emancipation - a race by no means entirely run - was going through a phase when feminine power was seen as an attribute of the career woman. As weapons for fighting in a "man's world", the trouser suit came first, followed by universal black. Now, things have changed and the situation is no longer so uptight - a good thing, because totally black wardrobes are a fashion aberration.
Fashionable women have always worn black. For day (the wool dress), for evening (the lace cocktail number) and for night (the taffeta evening dress). They've also always worn black shoes and carried black handbags. But most of their clothes have had colour. And that's the formula that designers are currently proposing: look at the catwalks and buy some black, but don't go mad with it.
Truly fashionable women never do that.
