Beauty tales of the unexpected
By Donna Chapman
Red lipstick, blue eyeshadow... we look at the beauty products you can wear, even though you think you can't.

Wearing red lipstick just takes confidence, not a Hollywood smile to carry it off.  If you thought that blue eye make-up was for grannies, dark nail colour was only worn by goths, and every girl should have just one signature scent, it's time to think again. Find out why you should change your mind about the 10 biggest beauty myths.

Red lipstick  This just takes confidence, not a Hollywood smile to carry it off. Classic scarlet is stylish and makes lips look fuller, teeth whiter and so on.

Blue eyeshadow  Why not mix the neutral palette and embrace an oceanic tone or two instead?  No longer the preserve of the blue-rinse set, a wash of blue over the lids contrasts beautifully with a tan. Shades of peacock are a hot trend for summer and suit almost everyone. Try Urban Decay Kiddie Pool, www.urbandecay.com.

Green concealer
Something of a surprise if you've stuck with the same flesh-toned formula since your teens, but a make-up pro is never without pale-green concealer, as there's nothing quite like it for toning down angry red pimples. The trick is not to use too much.

Lip liner  The make-up equivalent of the shoulder pad, the '80s obsession with the VLL (visible lip line) saw lip pencils banished to the beauty wilderness for years afterwards. However, now's the time to become reacquainted, as they're invaluable for correcting lip shape, balancing a Cupid's bow, creating fullness, etc. Choose a neutral shade and keep it super-subtle rather than going for broke and Angelina Jolie-esque beestung proportions.

Dark polish for fingers
Rather than reserve them for your toes, let your talons do the talking with chic, dark colours with more than a touch of the femme fatale about them. They're more high maintenance, as chips are more noticeable, so look for ones specially formulated with staying power. Grab Rimmel's 60 Seconds Vinyl Shine Nail Polish, in Time Out, an intense aubergine.

Coloured mascara
Challenge your conservative streak and go beyond black for audacious lashes. Best worn alone or with a hint of complementary colour underneath the lower lash line.

Spray foundation  Wean yourself off thick-coverage dependency and embrace the latest 'airbrush' technology. Say au revoir to greasy fingers, grubby sponges and tidemarks with Christian Dior Diorskin Airflash.

Putting oil on your face  Don't let loyalty to conventional moisturising creams and a mental image of an oil slick put you off any longer. Facial oils are highly penetrating, having a sheer consistency, and are even suitable for oily skins. Caudalie's Moisturizing Face Treatment Oil, www.caudalie.com, rehydrates and stimulates and contains 100% botanical active ingredients.

Using the same colour on eyes, lips and cheeks  If the idea of using the same make-up on a multiplicity of features has always seemed the epitome of blandness, then you're blind to the benefits of travelling lightly made-up.

Saying sayonara to your signature scent
Take time out from your favourite girlie fragrance to mix things up with a unisex scent or a gentleman's cologne. Masculine notes such as cedar, vetiver, oakmoss and sandalwood smell just as good on girls. Try Fresh Index Sandalwood Vert eau de parfum, visit www.fresh.com.
