I heard some disturbing news on the radio today. Apparently a new revolutionary laser trapping sytem is being installed in malaysia and was passed yesterday by their governement.

Apparently the technology allows laser traps to be installed inside of road reflector eyes ( i cant think of the proper name. ) All i can say is, we are collectively screwed. Once it is proven to work it is only a matter of time.... thumbdown.gif

This is crap crying.gif
cyfermaster
hmm... Can you imagine the cost involved in this...? Then you just got to keep an eye out for when they are installing them on the freeway... and remember to slow donw when you get there. Of course this will only help you on the route you travel a lot. But as per usual you will most likely be able to get the GPS locations of most of them after a while.

just wondering... where will the camera be? there is hope still....
hunter
Yep there is hope

Stick to the speed limit

Heard about these a year or so ago. They called smart eyes or something. They continously read your speed.

If the government install these, we will know Telkoms been bribing em.
cyfermaster
but how do they send you the fine? does it hook to a camera or what?
Jumba
I must quote a line from Liar Liar... "Stop breaking the law, asshole!!"

Not calling you an asshole but the f&*ing speed limit is there for a reason. Try obeying it. I've been the victim of two imbecils speeding. both times I almost died.

the guys that think that this is crap are zotties

Sure fine, don’t come cry to me when you get a R100 fine every fuggin week cuz you did 130 km/h on the highway. And PLEASE don’t tell me you guys have never speeded in your life. I hate SELF RIGHTIOUS PEOPLE!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am NOT CONDONING speeding!!! I’m just thinking of the repercussions of the stupid traffic officials who cant control their own equipment. I for one have been snapped doing 110Km/h in a 100 zone and have been fined.
I agree.
Wich is safer, keeping your eyes on the road or on the speedo?
hunter
By all means speed, but dotn bitch and moan if you get a fine
Like it or not you broke a law, so pay the price
Is the law stupid? Maybe
Trying to stay at 120 on a superbike that can hit almost 300 sucks, but if I do decide to open it up and get busted, well then I have to accept the fact that I chose to break the law
Fishfly
yeah but hunter some of the speed rules is rather ridicilous dont' you agree? you sometimes get a wide open road that can easily do 80-100 but they limit it down to 60.... which when driving at that speed gets 20 otehr car riding up uranus...
hunter
I like to think the limits are in teh right place.
If its 60 especially there is a chance that children play in the area, or people cross the road or whatever
I get seriously pissed off when I see people flying past me at 120 in an urban environment. What happens if they hit a kid, what do they tell the parents? OH SORRY I DONT THINK THE LIMIT IS RIGHT?
Jumba
Just be thankful our speed limits are quite high in this country. And people want them higher still?
We are all guilty of speeding every now and then, but I fail to see why some people get pissed off when a cop does his job enforcing the law. (I hate cops in general but the speed limit is cut and dry. If you exceed it you get a fine.)
Moral of the story: don't fight it, go with it, relax - two minutes longer to get to your destination is not going to kill you. Two minutes earlier just might.
I think you have to be on the receiving end of some negligent driver to appreciate how dangerous speeding really is. And to Cale, I am not being self-righteous, I am merely stating my opinion (gleaned from experience) and perhaps a bit of advice. Use it or don't use it, it's all the same to me. But it will be a different story if you hit my car or kill a pedestrian while speeding. Then don't come crying to me... I will be fresh out of sympathy.
hunter
Well said Jumba
And to clarify I am not some 18 year old kid who has been driving for a few months.
if that isnt self rightious then i dunno what is. ermm.gif
anyways,
Once again I dont condone speeding or reckless driving.
I am just concerned about the impact it might have on our daily lives when this is implemented. While I agree that it is an excellent idea and way to enforce the law, there must also be measures in place to control these devices.
IF they do decide to do this and it doesnt work as it's supposed to, expect a HELL of a lot of irrate road users posting in boards just like this.
and to hijack my own thread here
What are your thoughts on the implementation of the new taxi buses in KZN. I foresee a huge bloodbath in the future and Ill tell you guys why...
Firstly, sure you can safely seat 25 odd people in the bus, but wait, why not try and squeeze 40?? Surely it makes more sense and after all money talks?
Secondly, have you guys seen the performance of these vans??? They include the new Transporter as well as the Merc van.... I promise you these things fly. Gone are the days when you can drop a taxi on a hill, they are gonna pass you my friend. I shudder to think the carnage on our roads when these taxis start weaving in and out of traffic doing 150km/h... Speed limiters the government says.. yeah right ermm.gif
no I mean on a road where the car should be allowed 80 due to the nature of the road 3 lanes, wide road, no pedestrian crossing...
no my argument why cops are bastards is cos
1. They stop chinese ppl just so they can get a bribe...
2. They stopped my gf's aunt cos she was driving a BMW 1 series and after they couldnt' find a reason to stop her so they charged her with "Using cellphone while Driving"... she had her entire family was in the car as witness that she was not on the phone
3. The call us Chinks and thinks that is justified after we told them not to
4. They stop me cos they are "thirsty/Hungry"
Cale
FishFly, youre Chinese? eek.gif Gawd been here nearly 3 years and i never knew... ermm.gif
As with any profession you get corrupt people. It is a fact of life and in this instance you get corrupt cops. Its a sad fact, but you shouldnt brush all cops with the same comb. There are good ones as well and they do their job very well indeed.
I was stopped by a cop a few weeks ago and according to him, when i asked, was doing 136Kmp in a 120 zones. He never gave me a fine. Although I was grateful this cop was corrupt as well since he didnt obey the law himself.
Jumba
hehe Fishfly, as I said I also hate the cops with a passion - they have caused me untold grief in the past, looking for bribes etc. The stories I could tell...
Also, I agree that many speed limits are unreasonable/inappropriate for the area etc., but remember we can't all go around with the mentality of "I don't agree with this speed limit, therefore I'm going to break it." Surely there are other ways of addressing the situation - maybe petition to get the limit changed/whatever?
Cale, I said we are all guilty of speeding every now and then - but to do it on a regular basis is a different story entirely.
I agree with you about these new "mini" busses - I think they are going to be the cause of untold mayhem. Let's just pray those government-installed speed limiters actually work. afaik they are going to limit the vehicle to 100km/h. That should help, hopefully.
yeah I don't agree, I attempt to drive at the speed limit but (sorry I don't have a proper road to explain my example) imagine you driving down William Nicole towards Fourways and the speed limit is 60km/h all the way... what would happen?
Some people speed seriously on William Nicol down from Hyde Park shopping center and all the way along to the intersection with Republic. I have seen people doing WELL over 140 there.
stop selling cars that make us speed
boetie - you are calling me self righteous - well ....right now im waiting for my car to come out of the panel beater cos some poofter who was racing decided he could go right through my car and hit me from the back .......if that doesnt make him a prick i dont know what does - and i consider every idiot who believes he has a right to drive like that an idiot
i drive at the limits and below all the time - without fail cos i got tired a long time ago of getting tickets - and most of those were not higher than 15km/h above the limit - but since then ie for around the last 5 years ive stayed to the limit - and remember thats the limit ..... you should be slower
look cale ......socially you may be okay and im assuming you are educated - and im not out to pick a fight with you - its just that i hate people who complain about other people and do just as bad as them ......tell me you have never complained about taxi drivers ....ever - and in the case of an educated person who goes about speeding its terrible to me cos you should know better- its reached a stage that to me 90% of the guys on the road dont deserve to be on that road
1) guys drive fast
2) guys drive drunk
3) guys drive recklessly
4) guys drive with unroadworthy cars - and these cars mostly got unroadworthy cos the idiots who drive them drive to high limits and cant afford to fix them - racecars sometimes have entire engines replaced between races - can you afford that - they never use the same tyres - they replace each part all the time - you drive to the limit then your car needs more maintenance and care - and most guys cant afford it - yet still drive like maniacs
and to top it all off other people have various reasons why they want to stay within the letter of the law - they have their wives and kids with them - and they dont want anything to happen to those people so they are careful - but they cannot prevent other people being arseholes and causing the accident - furthermore imagine you were driving fast and smashed into a taxi carrying 14 people and killed all of them due to the speed you were doing 14 families now get affected - will you be able to afford to look after all of them
guy - the law is there for a reason cos according to your logic and any argument you care to make you would want to be a person who goes around raping chicks on the street and killing every person you have an argument with by blowing their brains out ........now if you think that this sounds ridiculous - its just as ridiculous as each guy who speeds around and drives like a fool and thinks that he has a right to - which unfortunately is a vast majority of the people - you guys need to change your ideas and become civilised cos you lot are totally uncivilised
i have learnt to tolerate it - but it irks me when educated people think that this is what their right is - fishfly's instance is different - there are corrupt cops out there - but most- note not all of the time when they stop you for a "see right" you did do something wrong which drew their attention in the first place
i honestly believe in the points system like australia has - you dont see moronic driving nor speeding in any form there - no road rage since no-one does idiotic things there since they are well aware that it isnt their right to be a moron
Dont think this country can afford that type of technology!!!!!!!!!
What i hate about Cops are, they speed all the time on their motorbikes, 4 no emergency they just want to get home quickly, almost causing accidents themselves.
No, I don't think it is good, it is just the one place I could think of where I see people speeding every day. I think the limit on that part of the road is 80, but people often drive 120+.
I pretty much agree with most of you. The only thing I could really complain about is getting a small fine in the same place twice within a very short time.
I've recieved 3 fines for doing 74 in a 60 zone, in exactly the same place within 3 weeks. I only found out about the fines after I recieved all three within the space of a few days. The road I was on really seemed like an 80 zone to me and I kept to a 60 km/h limit as soon as I got the first fine. I now regularly go through the experience of having a nice long row of cars piling up behind me, flashing their lights.
Anyway, I think it's rather stupid being fined 3 times within such a short space of time for something I would have only ever done once had I been aware of the first instance.
naughty
QUOTE
and they can stand on their head and whistle through their ass .......and you can still stick to the 60 - i dont bother with guys who do those things like flashing lights etc when they are wrong - as long as im in the right side of the law - and when they turn confrontational .......all i can say is they are gonna land up giving me free target practice for my "black talons"
QUOTE
eh I didn't call anyone self rightous
fishfly i wasnt reffering to you - i was refering to a comment that cale made earlier - but cale and me have communicated via PM - and im not fighting with him or anybody else - my gripe is that driving has become a thing that 99% of the people do badly and that mainly stems from a disregard of the law - when you stick to doing lawful things on the road then the road will be a far more pleasant place to be travelling on for everyone
rurounikenshin
Personally, I think that the country should invest in this sort of technology to monitor speed.
Who remembers last year where people were doing like 245 kmph with their kids wanering around the car????
And we've just learn't to accept a 30 000 death told over holiday seasons - due to reckless driving.
Bollocks I say. The situation is getting out of hand! Tonight I saw some one so drunk he couldn't even sit on a bar stool pick up his keys and get into his car. The guy fell over twice on the way there!
I waited like 30 minutes before I left, just to give him time to get well away from the area.
If he doesn't die tonight I will really be surprised.
Cale
Sooooo, yeah in peak afternoon traffic going out of Durban a black guy with a floppy hat was having the time of his life weaving in and out of traffic. General traffic was doing in the region of 120 - 130 in the fast lane past Pavillion onward to pinetown. When this guy had a gap and had clear air infront of him he litteraly dissapeared in the distance, my estimate he was doing 150km/h plus effortlessly.
My issue with the JMPD is that they seem to be there to make money from fines as opposed to their mandate which is to enforce municipal bylaws and ensure public safety. Speeding IS dumb and I really dont mind paying fines when I do get caught (seeing as generally they're only R100 or so cos I'm just above the limit) what does really grate my carrot is when the robot at the 14th avenue turnoff is down which causes traffic to backup all the way onto the highway which is HUGELY dangerous. However when I get to the defective robot I find 4 metro cops standing not 15 metres aways stopping ppl on the onramp for cellphone offences.
When I went to talk to them (both times I've seen this happen) and ask them why they are a) ignoring a potentially dangerous sitation by not directing traffic thru the faulty light , b) Creating a more dangerous situation by pulling cars over on an onramp which narrows it to 1 tight lane. The response I got both times is that they are on cellphone duty and another vehicle is being dispatched to deal with the robot.
I then phoned their dispatch and found out both times that this was bull. The damn cops were just to freaking lazy to do their jobs. Not to mention the fact that the second time this happened they tried to fine me for disrespectful attitudes towards an officer of the law...
I guess what I'm trying to get at is that I have no problem with traffic laws as such its just the pathetic selective enforcement of them that really get my goat.
I know this is off topic but hey I feel much better now smile.gif
