Everyone's been talking about their sound systems, just thought I'd let you know about last night.

I dj most weekends, but not very big (under 100 people) and only take a a pair of speakers, sometimes a sub. So last night I did a matric dance for about 400 people. Got to take almost everything out of my garage and set up a nice big rig for a change!

A total of about 3500watts peak on the speakers, 1900w rms. The amps I was using were putting out about 3200watts so I had enough headroom.

I'm not talking about a hi-fi that says 500w - thats more like 15w. This was really loud.

One of the managers at the hotel actually came to me after and said it sounded twice as good as the guy they had there last week.

I was running 2 x 12' 200w tops crossed over with 2 x 15' 500w subs as well as 2 x 15' 250w running full range. The room was about 40m x 40m and about 6m high.

Not a big system by big PA standards, but considering most of this can fit in by Golf3 and I can carry it all by myself it works for me. I did have help last night though.

Anyway, it sounded awesome and I had one huge party!

I've tried to combine 2 pics I took on my phone. The lights were dimmed so they came out pretty badly. It looks small in the pic but those speakers are pretty big - well, big enough biggrin.gif

nice - i used to DJ before - but i was mainly using fixed systems in the clubs i played in - i miss using the technics SL1200's - vinyl still rules for dj mixing

but thats a nice setup you have there - wish i was in cape town though so i could have gone through your music collection

Thanks - its taken 8 years to build this system, and I've only got a few things left to add before I'm happy. But its like upgrading a computer - when the hell do you stop!?!

I play at most of the 21st for the UCT & some Stellies students, being a student myself I've pretty much got the market cornered, and I've done over 100 in the last 4 years. Also getting into weddings, 50th's, some corporate stuff. Its all about connections and I'm getting more all the time. But with this type of crowd I play just about everything except house, rave, etc. Mostly 60s, 70s, 80s, hip hop, pop, some rock. So theres no point in vinyl unfortunately.

Last night was mostly hip-hop, but a really fun crowd and they danced all night.

I've got another huge matric dance in 7 weeks for my old school. They've got lots of money so are hiring an awesome system. 2 double cab JBL 18' subs, 4 JBL 15's for tops and tons of Crown amps. And a nice expensive inteligent lighting setup. I just take my CD's players, get up on stage and have a party! I'll try get better photos of that. I did it last year and my legs shook the whole night - my rickety stage was right next to a sub!

Yo mike i know the feeling when you got a big sound system it feel soooo good the bass booming and your heart pumping the other day i did one with x6 Jbl dual 15" speakers. x4 SRX series 1200w each which were powered by 2 crest CA1800's , and then x2 SRX dual 15" subs 1200w each powered by a crest CA1800 also and to top that off x4 Jbl eons G2's as monitors 500w each! Took my quite a while to set up with sum one helping me.

I go for quality over quantity but in total i'm running more that 3.5KW RMS on my home theater anyway smile.gif in a 3x5M room. Can vibrate your eyeballs if I want to tongue.gif

LOL

The problem with dj systems is you need more quantity than quality. I've upgraded my amps and speakers to have a decent compromise and kept the cost reasonable. When people are dancing and its this loud that extra bit of quality is generally unnecessary and lost, especially for a student making extra money doing this.

I'm retiring in a year or so, I'll probably keep most of this stuff and set up a nice setup at home if theres space. It takes up a whole single garage at the moment...

It wont be a high quality home system though, and the size of these speakers mean they have to be quite loud to sound clear.

What size drivers are your mid range and subs? With something like 10" subs and 4 or 6" mids its easier to get a good clear listening volume for a house than with my 12" mids and 1.5" compression drivers. the 15" subs also hardly move unless they are pumping.

Also, 3.5KW into smaller speakers wont give the same throw and overall strength, and the sound will be a little easier absorbed by people etc. than with larger drivers. But in that size room - comfortably enough for any size speakers!! biggrin.gif

Warpath - you're in Cape Town arent you? I think I should come drool over your system sometime...

i very much doubt that - i know a guy who has duntech speakers that are larger than a door and he uses identical speakers in the rear at R80k a set and he uses genesis subs (pair of 15") and krell H.E.A.T components (high end audio theatre) [including 500watt RMS monoblocks per speaker and a krell dvd with independent dacs and a preamp/reciever combo) - total cost at around R2.5 mill when you include his screen and projector and video quadrupler eek.gif - the guys even got 8 leather covered lazyboys with popcorn and cooldrink holders in his room and each person watching can recline in luxury to watch a movie

BTW duntechs are even more rare cos they arent made anymore and now will qualify as collectors items - so i shudder to think what this guy will ask for his sytem when he upgrades - they are up for sale at the moment but i didnt suggest to him to place those in the "junk pile" cos i dont think that too many peeps here or anywhere else for that matter would be interested in a home theatre set where the asking price is around R2.5 mill whistling.gif

but dont get me wrong - i think that W( at )RP( at )T}{'s setup is very impressive in its own rights and so is djmike's - only thing is ........... each system is designed for a different job and should be looked at from the perspective of its function

tempus_fugit
Wow, that seems pretty impressive.
