QUOTE
Of course, this is based on the Roald Dahl book (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory). Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) is an only child who lives in a shack with his impoverished family, surviving on cabbage soup. When eccentric entrepreneur Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) announces his long-closed factory gates will open to the finders of golden tickets hidden in five chocolate bars, Charlie – who gets on bar every birthday – doesn’t seem to stand much chance…
What’s right with it? Johnny Depp is brilliant. Who knows what inspired him to play Wonka with white make-up, girlie bobbed hair and even girlier voice – perhaps Michael Jackson? – but it works perfectly. The script by John August (Go, Charlie’s Angels) is smart, irreverent and full of witty surprises – and a perfect fit with Depp’s delivery.
What’s wrong with it? Despite the lavish production design, the film is most inventive in the scenes that lead up to Charlie and the other lucky winners entering the factory. The comeuppances of the unworthy brats, and especially the songs by the Oompa Loompa factory workers, are individually funny, but cumulatively repetitive.
Length: 115 minutes.
Verdict: Another triump for the seemingly demented Burton-Depp partnership. Like a hefty slab of pure, dark Green & Black’s, it’s to good to waste on children.

I'm definitely going to see it - I love Johnny Depp, he's a brilliant actor.
