QUOTE
For many men, skin care is a mere afterthought. Beyond the world of shaving their faces, it is rare for a man to devote time to his skin, especially the skin on his face. However, proper skin care is essential for the present and the future. Skin is the body's first line of defense against sickness, germs, and diseases.

Additionally, as we age, our skin loses its elastic nature. Thus, we develop wrinkles and facial lines. For these reasons alone, proper skin care is important. These tips will help you keep your skin in shape without making you spend hundreds of dollars on products that promise "miracle cures."

To begin with, men should realize that proper skin care need not take copious amounts of time. A few minutes a day is all that is necessary. Wash your facial skin with a mild soap such as Ivory. Do not use a deoderant or strong soap on your face. Use cold water to rinse.

One or two times a week, wash your face with lukewarm water and a deep cleanser such as Noxzema. Use a slightly wet washcloth, and gently work in the cleanser in a circular motion. Your pores will be cleaned out and your skin will feel better. Always pat your face dry with a clean towel. Apply a moisturizing lotion or aloe vera lotion.

Everyday elements such as such and wind can dry your skin to the point that it hurts. To prevent this, wear sunscreen when you plan to be outdoors for an extended period of time. An SPF factor of 15 should suffice. Pick a sunscreen that has aloe and moisturizers in it. After being in the sun, apply a facial moisturizer that contains vitamin E. You can also apply this any time your face feels dry.

Shaving is always rough on your face, so do it right. If you use a blade, make sure that your face is coated with a thin stream of hot water before applying shaving cream. Give the cream a few minutes to settle in. Use a sharp razor that has a double blade attached to it. Take your time. Rinse with cold water, not hot. Applying after shave cream such as Afta works better than applying liquid. If you use an electric razor, apply pre-shave lotion to enable your whiskers to stand up and keeps your shaver gliding easily across your face. It will also lessen the irritation and burn that comes with electric shaving.

Eating a balanced diet and staying active are obviously part of the equasion. Double up on the fruits and vegetables, which often contain many anti-oxidants that can retard skin damage. Take a multi-vitamin that is rich in anti-oxidants and vitamin E. Do your best to avoid greasy, fried food. Substitute olive oil in place of butter when you cook. It is healthier and, as some claim, will allow your skin to retain its elasticity longer.

Exercise will do more than simply get your heart rate going. It will clear your pores, increase your metabolism, and generally make you feel better about yourself. Sweating allows your inner body to cleanse itself.

Perhaps the easiest and best way to help your skin is to drink plenty of water on a day to day basis. The majority of your body's cells are made of water, and it only makes sense to keep hydrated. Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day. Increase your intake if you are a drinker of beverages that dehydrate you, such as coffee, soda, and alcohol. If you do drink alcohol excessively, do your best to limit your intake, as the consequences will manifest themselves in more than just bad-looking skin.

Diligent practice of the above tips will not have you looking like a cover model overnight. However, your skin will look healthier and younger, allowing you to feel better about yourself.

I go for facial treatments on my face. It's a treatment called LHE (Light and Heat Energy). Basically, an incredibly hot bulb burns your face for an hour or so. It's great fun. The bulb is on the inside of something that is about the same size and shape as a barcode scanner. The person doing it will put the 'scanner' on your face (the whole face is done, not just parts) and will press a button. An incredibly bright and hot flash will then proceed to sear the skin beneath and do something.

I don't have the foggiest idea how it works but the results are incredible. I no longer even get pimples, they just don't show up. Also, all the scarring which I had earlier in my teens is practically gone. It works by some sort of miracle.

It's not to be taken lightly though, it is incredibly painful. Most people underestimate me when I say it's hot. Let me put it this way: the bulb inside the 'scanner' never touches the skin. It stay about 0.5cm away from the skin at all times. Nevertheless, it is still hot enough to burn the hair off of my face. Try bringing something so hot that it singes your hair close to your face but not actually lettting it touch your hair. Also it tends to leave a barcode-like mark on my face sometimes due to the design of the bulb. The mark is actually a burn. Press a burning fork into your skin for the same effect.

Honestly? It's worth it, I would never doubt that. Life as a metrosexual is tough biggrin.gif

Oh, and before any of the 'tough men' on the forum start calling me a 'fag' for having facial treatments, please stick a red-hot fork onto your face once a week before commenting. Thanks.
toasted
Just out of interest, how much does one of the treatments cost?

Sounds painful. Not even I, THE MIGHTY FEMALE WHO GOES THROUGH SO MUCH PAIN, would be able to deal with that. And I don't want it to singe my beautiful facial hair. (And, no, I'm not hair like a gorilla beast, but I do in fact have eyebrows).

clap.gif
Simon
It's about R400 per session, but that's a full facial treatment, not just the LHE treatment. It's expensive, yeah, but you can notice the difference after the second time and it's not something that's constant, depending on how bad you are, you eventually finish the treatment and never go back.

They eyebrows aren't singed, but my sideburns and teen-beard look really crappy when they come out.

QUOTE

Oh don't lie, women want to have children, this is a walk in the park compared to that biggrin.gif
toasted
That's frieken expensive, sha.

How long do the results last for btw?

Hah, seeing as I don't have anything thing to compare the pain of giving birth with (since I've never given birth of course), I can't really use that in my argument.

I can, however, compare the pain of being burnt..
Fishfly
WTF? simon has R400 to blow for facials??? good golly! simon sponsor me 5 sessions biggrin.gif

This kind of comment deserves a thread on its own. However, I will take time out my busy schedule to belittle you right now:

1. It should be "mommy's" boy. Why you used the plural of 'mommy' is beyond me. I bet it's beyond you too.
2. Why not start the next sentence with a capital letter? In fact, why not end the previous one with a full stop?
3. The correct term is 'you are' abbreviated to "you're". 'Your' denotes possesion.

How can I take what you say seriously when you make grammatical errors that a 12 year old would be ashamed of? Why did you even say this? Does it make you feel good? Did you know that I had very bad scarring from acne in my early teen years? Well, if you could read at a competent level, you would have picked that up. Why would I want to go around with horrible scarring on my face? "Oh, look at me, I am so manly because I HAVE ACNE SCARS ON MY FACE". You sound like an idiot.

AAAW HEL NAAAW. Send yourself. Besides, you can't go to 1 and make a judgement on it based on that. Then again, it is a more 'radical' treatment, if you don't have something wrong with your face that's glaringly apparent, then don't go to it.

I don't even understand what you are getting at. If you were a lobster face, then there are two options here:

1. You have scarring from it. You do not wish to treat it as you believe that this makes you manly. I really don't understand this, do you believe that manly = ugly?
2. You do not have scarring and are therefore lucky. Congratulations but some don't have it that easy.

If you had scarring and you decided not to do something about it, then you are an idiot.

Oh, and you don't have to post everything that you have accomplished in life, I really don't care.
W@RP@T}{
I said I apologise, in your case you are welcome to do it. I actually recommend it. I wasn't a lobster face but suffered from acne from time to time and still do from time to time. So I can relate. I dont have scarring but if I did I would look at ways to rectify it. If you had said you go for facials because of it, it would have cleared up alot (pun intended) smile.gif

No offence Simon, but I'm a grumpy old man, if you're going to grill me then you will get flamed (lol and again another pun)

Funny shit. Keep those hormones under control young man smile.gif

I'm still trying to work out how to keep mine under control.

Simon: Sounds good, but Im not sure I would be able to do it myself. But then again, luckily my acne scars are healing pretty well, so hopefully I will never need anything to deal with them.

Warpath: Grumpy old man tongue.gif I agree that if you go for facials, and dont need it, you are gay. Unless the chick who does it is hot, and you are trying to get into her pants of course.

Facials are great...one less area to worry about...and if you have a high forehead coupled with Qballitis they do the whole head. Nothing wrong with getting the whole dead skin ripped off with sand.

Now if only they would also do waxing of the gouch and windy valley.

I am particularly fussy about my skin. Every day i use a wide variety of prodcuts to help keeps me feeling good and hopefully looking sharp.

I use:
1.) 10 time a week I use a normal deep cleaning facial wash
2.) 4 times a week I use an exfoliating scrub
3.) Every day i cleanse, tone and moisterise my face
4.) In the evenings i use numerous products to help keep my spots under control.

And the sad thing, i still get spots, but its alot better with this than without doing all the cleaning.

Nice article!

Interesting to see all the budding Patrick Bateman's coming to the fore. Luckily, I never had bad acne and my skin is fine, so I don't need all the hassle. I have nothing against skin care per se, and I'm sure its beneficial, but I can't imagine wanting/needing to get into a routine personally. Lucky me I guess.

I remember reading a post some guys posting on a local forum ... I thought it was Prophecy, but I did a search and found nothing. I think it was at UT-oriented forum of some sort. Anyway, it was some guys humourous account of shaving his ass. Long story short, he found out the hard way that ass hair has a vital role to play in your daily comfort:

1) it stops sweat from building up on your skin and making your crack slimy as hell
2) when it grows back, it grows back as thousands of sharp, tough little bastard hairs that poke you starfish and crack for weeks before returning to normal.

There were some other points he made that I can't remember.

I dont know...but it gives you a really sexy walk. Uhm...and it feels good on the whole...pun.

In short; you need to cleanse tone and moisturise twice a day, exfoliate and apply a mask at least once a week.

Then depending on your skin type you may need some extra help like a serum applied in the evening for dry skin or a shine control treatment which usually comes in the form of a facial gel. It would be ideal if all South African men (and women) used an eye cream or gel to prevent the area around the eye from losing elasticity and combatting the dark circles (caused by hours in front of the PC) tongue.gif

Going for a professional facial once a month is a great idea and the prices range anything from R100 to R650 depending on what you have done... there is something called High Frequency Treatment which goes to work right down to your third level of skin, they use a strong electric current to stimulate your circulation and force whicever product they are using into your skin thus speeding up the healing process for any scarring and delivering a bright glow. biggrin.gif

Gentlemen ask your partners to give you a facial once a week, that way you get to spend lovely quality time together And your skin looks great biggrin.gif

She might even be clued up enough to pluck your unruly eyebrows to make you look a tad less 'bushman like' tongue.gif

yaikes fear how you guys deviate from the topic ermm.gif

BlackRazor go to any top notch salon and ask for a sack and crack wax, it's not an uncommon thing...

I've got really sensitive skin, so I can't do all that sort of thing.

I wash every night with Clinique, if my face is dry, I'll moisturise. But usually cleansing burns too much.

Some days I can't even wash my skin, my face feels burnt, and starts to peel, especially around my mouth.

I get rashes from almost everything. I had a rash for over a year and a half from being sprayed by DocterMoo's deodorant.

I hate my skin.

Toasted, I have exactly the same type of skin. I can reccomend some South African products made especially for us that I use every day if you like.

Alternatively if you're going to be in the UK for quite some time still, try Garnier's range for mature or sensitive skin (the pink packaging), it's real inexpensive and I used it with no problems biggrin.gif

Or if you want to 'invest' in your skin do a bit of research on Decleor products - rather expensive but Amazing stuff clap.gif and easily available in the UK. I'm not a huge Clinique fan sad.gif

hiccupsie
a bit of both I'd say cyfermaster - BUT if you were to adopt a proper face care regimen I'm sure you'd have Amazing skin then biggrin.gif

Just remember ladies and gents, your body takes aproximately three months to react to some things like face care regimens - so if during the first few weeks of doing it all your skin has a tingly feeling and you get a few spots don't give up, that's simply your skin realising that Something is going on... after three months it will settle and you'll be preventing wrinkles and all clap.gif

Nothing you use on your skin should ever Burn or Sting heavily, that means that you're either allergic or intollerant to the specific brand - take an antihistamine, apply something like tea trea oil or aloe to soothe before you try something else...

That's why figuring out What Type of skin you have before you buy anything is so important.

Also whatever you do - Steer well clear of anything like Oxycute and Gill etc etc, those products were made to practically strip your first layer of skin from ALL its oils sad.gif you don't want ALL the oil gone cause then the only thing that happens is that your skin realises from the third layer that it has to produce MORE oil cause the facial wash just stripped away ALL its oil sad.gif resulting thus in pimples etc etc
sad.gif

People keep buying them cause they might feel like they are the only products that 'properly' cleans your skin but that's also why you'll keep having to buy them cause you'll be doing oil control deluxe every day ermm.gif

Oily skin needs to be Most importantly treated from the inside out, I can recommend a few SA products that do that and then treated with great care emphasis on cleansing And toning and a gel based moisturiser with shine control smile.gif
cyfermaster
well I guess I should start then. To avoid the wrinkles etc...

What would you recommend to start with?
hiccupsie
fear the short replies sad.gif

tongue.gif

uhm, from what you've said thus far it seems like you have a normal skin but could be normal / combination, I'd really need to see to be a 100% sure but if it's not oily (and you'll know if it was), and it's not like Toasted's and mine or dry and tight feeling it must be as normal as it gets...

so I'd say get the basics, cleanser, toner and moisturiser, your product range should be for made for normal/combination skins and make sure that the toner is alcohol free. I'f you're looking at which brand to buy compare prices if you like cause I can give you advice on for example, a moisturiser with prices ranging from R60 to R950.

I'm guessing we don't want to start at the R950 mark yet tho tongue.gif

Garnier the normal/combination range (green packaging) available I believe in Clicks Foschini's and such. You could go for the sensitive range too as that can never harm (pink packaging) I dunno where you're from but if you're in the UK you can get it all from Boots.

Help please!

Im like cyfer, I have no clue about this stuff!

I had pretty bad acne last year, but I have been on roaccutane since september. Everything has cleared up, and I finish the course at the end of the month.

I have never done any deep cleansing miracle stuff, and even though the doctor told me to wash my face with some or other stuff, I never remembered, or just wasnt bothered sad.gif

Living in Dubai, I sweat a hell of a lot when Im outside, and after a shower I just put a small amount of moisturiser on my face to stop getting ugly dry skin patches all the time.

Once Im off the roaccutane, my skin should stop turning into flake fest once a week, and go back to normal, but I want to keep things looking sweet, and I have the memory of a goldfish with ADD, so daily things are a problem for me sad.gif

Is there anything worth while doing? Or should I just leave it be?
hiccupsie
Gitano

You need to be Real careful from here on in, if I were you I'd start with a range for sensitive skins cause Roaccutane does tend to make your skin extra sensitive after you stop using it.

Again try the pink Garnier range for sensitive skins, I'm sure I saw some last time in the airport building in Dubai so you should be able to buy it over there. I would however suggest you go for one more visit to the Dermatologist just for them to check everything out and maybe suggest a range that is more easily available in Dubai (if the Garnier isn't) and that they'd personally recommend.

Did you have an oily skin before you started taking Roaccutane?
It does amazing things but makes it hard to know where and how to start off again after the treatment as you do experience such a drastic difference in your skin texture etc.

Id' also Definitely recommend that you go for monthly facials at a Professional salon, if you had reason to use Roaccutane you need to look after your skin very well.
