This is all fine and well, and I can see why you guys did it. And, yeah, congrats and keep up the good work!
but... er... Could we have like, a consolidation page, or something? Browsing all of this is going to become an absolute nightmare. To the point that I don't think I'll bother in the future. Which is sad, because, realistically, I really DO want to know what's going on in all the forums. But now I'll have to go through multiple "new posts" thingies, etc, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the move. But a nice "old-skool" page where I could see all the main subforums and their latest posts would be nice.
please?

One thing I've noticed and I'm not sure if it's just me, but the cross site logins isn't working
That was beyond annoying having to login to every single site :'(

The site is still in beta, so there will indeed be a lot of problems in the beginning, unforeseen things that pop up and annoyances here and there. I can assure you that they will all be dealt with systematically in terms of priority and severity.
A new topic will be made soon in which all bugs and problems may be addressed, in the mean time though the administration team will be going through all the sites fixing all the obvious problems which will then also be listed in the previously mentioned topic so that a timeline can be established with milestones marked off for the purpose of tracking progress.
I can tell you so far that it took a lot longer than we thought it would take to copy and move across all the databases, SQL was running at 98% and Dave (fx) was typing faster than SQL queries were going through at some stages.
With regards to the issue of seeing the latest posts from all forums: we'll be working on this issue as one of the first on a list of them, in the meantime if you browse to the vault9.net index page you'll see at the bottom a list of our network sites. Clicking on one will open a list to the right showing the latest posts of that section. This is currently working via RSS and in future we'll set up a page whereby you'll be able to select which networks' RSS feeds you want and then you'll receive a list of your selections in one RSS feed.
Please be patient, all other issues will be attended to expressly.

Is this the only info on the new site? I got a few q's in my head, like what prompted this? How come vault9? How come we didn't get any warning?
Anyway i just got used to the netforums site, but this site looks and feels pretty kewl, so yeah lets hope it grows even more with this re-engineered look!

Fiszn: Some of your questions will find answers in the welcome letter, as for a "warning", there were various hints here and there but the majority of people only found out when the change was already under way.

Yes, i kinda found that after i posted this, hehe, sorry my bad.
Still a rather interesting approach, can't wait to see how it pans out! I must say you guys did extremely well with the changeover, keeping all the current members happy and not feeling too out of place! 2/2 changeover successes!

This was the original plan, but we ran into a few possible problems which we are first working around. See, the topic read system stores what topics you have read into your cookie and according to that, determines what posts must be shown as new. Yes, this is very primitive, but a solution has allready been done.
We are investigating this and hopefully we can do this as this was the intention from the word go.
Cheers, Ian

Very nicely done guys. The site looks awesome. Great to see you guys are working on the cross-site login and new posts problems. Maybe give us two options for new post since last visit. One for the section and one for the whole forum?

The big question on everyones lips...
How much was this tested if at all?
and is anybody else still getting fuck all on the main page www.vault9.net ?
Chatsubo
Jul 8 2005, 12:28 AM
Well, I've noticed that the main page is very font-size specific. If I set my fonts to any size other than normal, things flow over borders, the search box goes all wrong, etc.
I know it's prob all the CSS going on, but still annoying, I like bigger fonts.
(This is on Firefox, windows and linux)

main page isn't fixed I don't think.
The menu goes straight through the banner.
I imagine (and hope) it wasn't designed like that.
I've tested it on 3 different machines with all 3 browsers and the same thing on all of them.

CrEaTi0n could you seriously consider an index that will view all the new posts across all the Vault's, I'm sure this will cut down on many of the complains, as most of us are bandwidth limited here in SA, because to have 8 pages open, the refresh at random, and trying to refresh, is realy a bandwidth killer.
Also a few borders around a topic, and then if you decide to create a new main index you can colour that topic that relates to a secific vault!

One thing I would like to see: Is it possible to link all of the shoutboxes, and make them all the same shoutbox? I think it would be a lot easier for people to communicate, and less complicated for those shoutbox regulars who are short a few pennies (the trout )

Jul 10 2005, 01:33 PM
thanks Gitano. That is nice. What I would prefer is one that looks like the Active Topic in each Vault. Just you have a global one that has colour coded sections. That way you can see who has just posted there etc...
Gitano
Jul 10 2005, 01:37 PM
That would be sweet. But lets give the admins some time to breath hey! I think they have been working too hard to remember to eat sometimes, look at everything they have done, and all the problems they have fixed already.
Probably all lose their jobs, then we are all screwed
Hey, is it just me, or are the blogs not working?
Also, the gallery doesnt work, I only get Members Gallery, none of the other sections that used to be there. Or are they all elsewhere? Ill go hunting.
