One of the guys from my varsity, who finished a short while ago, is looking for a job. He majored in Software Development.

Everywhere he's looked has given the usual "you can't get a job, till you've got experience" line. I'm sure everyone knows the problems with that idiocy.

Ideally he'd like to go into Java Programming, but at this point is prepared to accept anything. Does anyone have advice on the best way he can try and get a job?

at my varsity there are companies advertising and looking for newly graduated students. surely he has something similair like that there? i think the easiest would be to speak to the people from his faculty office and they will guide him.
otherwise he will have to be on the look out for 'junior' positions... maybe even temporary job positions.

What experience does he have other than Java?

Has he tried any one of those recruitment companies ( can't think of what exactly they are called) . A friend of mine went to them and they asked for his CV. they reworked his Cv and he got a job as a junior software engineer, it doesn't pay much but he is gaining experience.

Another thing, he most likely did some kind of fooling around after hours with java, so he could say he wrote software in his spare time to enrich his life, that's got to count. I got another friend who didn't even make it through the second year and he got a job as a junior programmer too. I was offered a job at a place in Pretoria who hires people who just finished varsity and then they RE-train you to write communications software for them in your language of choice they're quite small, always looking and i can't remember their name, which probably does 't help your friend.

I am sure if he just carries on looking he'll find something. I have many friends who graduated, most with no expierience at all who eventually got jobs writing software unfortunatly all in the PTA area thumbdown.gif

He's been trained in PHP, XML, ASP etc on the web side, otherwise Java, VB and C. He has done some web contracting from time to time, not sure which tech, but I think PHP.

Drop me a PM. I might be able to help him.

Which area is he in?
